This guy has absolutely nothing going for him, except maybe a huge body of work with some of the best musicians on the planet, unsurpassed technique and musicality, creativity, inventiveness, and the fact that after 40+ years in the business he is still pushing boundaries and full of energy. Yeah, apart from that...........
well wes , i guess all we can do is take the inspiration that we get from bozzio , wackerman , cobham and all the rest of the greats and come up with some unique art of our own , i guess we owe it to ourselves ; i still think of the burn thing sometimes but i 'm gonna keep pushing , good luck and blessings to you and your creative journey .
This a good composition. Interesting all the way through. Terry Bozzio understands that playing the drums is not a competition and it is not a sport. Drums are for playing music on and that is what he did here.
This is one of the three most extraordinaire drum solos I´ve ever heard in my life. And I should say that I am in my 50´s and have listened and seen drummers since the late sixties. Bozzio is in my order of inner alter egos. Vic´s million thnx 4 post this. What a way to start this year.
This is the most amazing Drum Solo I have ever seen! Bozzio understands what defines the magic of a solo, namely that it is about the air between the tones and not about the biggest quantity of notes played in time. This solo just breathes, the rythm stretches and narrows and all that with nice, multifacetted colours which he masters to play out of the drums. This is so inspiring... Thank you so much for uploading this! I wish I would have been there!...
Terry is absolutely innovative and amazing. I love the fact that no matter the size of the drum kit, He still develops his improvisational ideas over or against a chosen ostinato.
All these years and I still get back and learn a lot with this solo , which is definitely not just a solo but a true lesson on what drums is all about in music and what a beautiful development musical and physical drums can get. This is absolutely an all other level. Thank you Terry , thank you for this beautiful gem!
this is not only a solo...this is a lesson about everything a competent and brilliant musician should be/have...soul and heart with good technique ( on the case of Terry Bozzio , great technique)
I've loved watching and listening to Terry Bozzio from back in his long-blonde-hair days. He is an innovative drummer. When I heard and watched this, I could not believe the way he became a part of the instrument he was playing. It was a 4-piece kit and (I use Sabians as well because of how great they sound loud, ridden, or soft) two cymbals. The way Terry plays this kit is nothing of a marvel. He is not just a drummer, he is a musician with drums - 6 sounds. The hi-hat and kick are part of the ostinato that underlies the rhythm. His feel is unmatched, and while he is doing this, he is also thinking of the people watching him who like drumming. An amazing talent, after 25+ years of drumming, I hereby nominate this performance of Terry Bozzio as an easy entrance into the drummer's HOF. Thanks to Terry for doing this section knowing he was being videoed, but able to allow (as always) the sound of the skins and the bronze to take him to other places....
Super stuff. The ostinato form is something he's been into forever. It really allows him to be free with his ideas. More music, less 'chop'. I'd love to see more small kit stuff.
Anderton .Gambino You are hating just to hate. This "Mediocre" drummer as you call him played with Zappa. In case you don't know, only the best of the best played with him. You make general comments about how bad you think he is but what about it is bad? I just think his musical abilities are more than your musical taste can comprehend personally.
Yes everyone lets listen to the opinions of a man who has a tools profile picture. Open your ears. I can obviously see you're a huge fan of Thomas Laang which is great. However, everyone needs to see the ideas and creativity in EVERY drummer. I saw a person that had been playing for only a year the other day at one of the shows i was playing at. And sure he got off beat but I defiantly wouldn't be the person like you seem to be and would attack him for his faults or ideas. In fact I learned from it, everything can be inspiring, too me all it shows is your impatient just like most of this generation.
Like seriously, this dude plays at a caliber of ridiculousness. Thee most technical drummer I've ever seen. The stuff he does amazes me so much. And would take me an immense time period to comprehend his playing fully...
I am a drummer and drumming instructor who has worked with many name people. There are some people who do not like T.B. You have to understand what he doing. There is a beautiful looseness and independence to his playing. I do not like when people compare drummers in a competitive way. There is a real musicality, creativity, and innate hipness to his approach.
Zappa was auditioning drummers in a big warehouse type studio. There was about 200 hundred drummers. Zappa was like, "Next, next, next..." - Then Terry got up. Zappa was initially impressed so he started throwing stuff at him, "Solo in 19/8, etc, etc," Once all the other drummers saw somebody playing a drum solo in 19/8 on commmand, they knew they were beat so they all slunk off...
@@Gfp1995 wiith these kind of time signatures, just divide them into bite-size pieces, e.g. 19/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 3/8 And you could count it like this It is easy to work with these kind of signatures once you can divide like this quickly. ✌🏼
This video was captured at Vic's Drum Shop Grand Opening in October of 2008. I know I was there, I was standing directly to Bozzio's right near the window. It was great, Terry did not disappoint, one of the best and creative drummers in the world.
FUCKING BRILLIANT DRUMMER-anybody says otherwise better show their shit or SHUT THE FUCK UP FOREVER!!! Man, this drumming is 90% Afro Cuban drumming. Afro Cuban drummers are the best drummers in the world and this Italian American drummer has their shit down cold, plus he's playing an independent bass drum/hi hat ostinato UNDERNEATH the Tito Puente timbale/tom tom phrases. He's a RED hot percussionist and detractors are just totally BLOVIATING. Blow it out your ass!!!
+Simon Loveland thankyou!!! You can see the dude playing what is 'regular' rock (as far as zappa would allow it to be!) in live videos from back in the day. For people to expect Terry to still wanna play the same stuff or to still be inspired and excited by parts that present little to no challenge for him anymore is laughable.
Zappa once said that Terry was his favorite drummer of all the ones he worked with . It was cool because Terry was featured more than most drummers were in any band. As far as vocals and performance were concerned. As well as a innovator .
There is no denying that this man is an iconoclast of the instrument. So the following to all the would be haters is not a judgement but rather a pondering. I find his playing to be so much more engaging on this small kit. I appreciate the musicality for which he looks to achieve on the larger kit.I am lead to believe that if he spends more time in this capacity he would be talked about as one of the greatest and important drummers of all-time not just one of the greatest players alive.
I'll admit that while I used to at least appreciate his ability and skill, I never really admired his huge kit with all it's bells and whistles; it all just seemed so "extra". But hearing him now on a small kit totally blows my mind. This video totally changed my view of him. Love it!
Making that floor tom sound like four different drums is what makes this so awesome. Alot of guys just wanna hear super fast double kick or it"sucks!" Hes playing an instrument not just beat a drum set. Amazing.
Terry, if you are out there reading, do more of this. Forget that ridiculous monstrosity of a kit you've been playing for a number of years and get back to this. I'm a huge fan and haven't heard you this inspiring in about a decade. You're ideas work soooo much better in this context.
wasnt he ranked best drummer percussionist in the world at one piont and for those of you that realy dont know too much ablout terry, he has studied the percussions in every country . watch melodic drumming and the ostinado. pretty impressive. Great stuff here Terry, if you ever read these things. ;)
Terry has always been about trying to expand the conventions of drumming, that being said, not all of his experiments have been easy to appreciate, and some have even seemed a bit pointless; go back and watch some of his stuff with Zappa, he was a beast!
Once again people on here hating Terry are mentioning Mike Portnoy types as being better, are you fucking kidding me? Bozzio has taken drumming so far in to the future it isn't even funny and Portnoy plays metal fills that have been around since the 80's and the most generic ones at that! And all the haters of Bozzio's huge kit here you go he is on a small kit and he plays it the exact same way conceptual, musical and if you want to get technical this shit is hard as fuck, play anything other then a quarter note on your kick and do anything worth while over it, not easy at all! Why I even waste my time with you people I don't know well yeah I do, I hate seeing someone who is this advanced and obviously over so many drummers heads betting reemed out all the time, research this guy before talking again!
i think terry bozzio's drum kit (his other one) is the reason he attracted a lot of criticism. its a fair point, i think he is an amazing drummer but that drumkit is a little alienating for fans of drumming who can barely afford to replace sticks.
Monsterdrumma Mike Portnoy is good, but Terry Bozzio is a Tito Puente freak/fan. Not only is Bozzio a Puente fan, he has Puente's stuff down cold. Puente is THE afro-cuban timbale player. He would fucking monster somebody like Mike Portnoy. Terry Bozzio would freak out Puente, because he's doing Puente's stuff with his hands and playing an independent ostinato bass drum/hi-hat pattern UNDERNEATH the Puente timbale/tom tom phrases. And some little jack off wants to slag it off???-Yeh right!!!
try playing like terry, and you'll see how hard his style is to emulate. A heck of vinnie and Gadd clones all over but no one else can copy what bozzio has been doing for the past 50 yrs. I know, he was one of my favorite teachers! !!
Kinda sad how great he sounds on such a simple kit. For a few decades Terry's despised stuff like hi-hats and rides, but the way he worked those very traditional sets of cymbals was so tactful-aggressive that it set him apart more than 20 chinas and 30 cymbal stacks ever could, good as they may be. The stuff he played with Zappa and UK is absolutely fucking killer, and he played pretty standard double bass kits those days.
***** are you sure it's not the and of 2? it seems he's playing a clave (i believe a son clave? i can't remember right now) pattern with the bass pedal and it's lining up with the second bass note which is on the and of 2? thoughts?
Great drummer, great independence, creative and very musical! Frank Zappa brought out the best of him though. So, Terry is one of my favorite drummers WHEN he was with Zappa. He's on Zappa's Live in New York, Zoot Allures, Bongo Fury, Sleep Dirt and others.
Terry is absolutely amazing and creative in a vast world of robotic, copy cat drum solos! I'm sure some of the "YT drum experts" who down voted this video will say that he needs to beat the drums harder, and/or play a marching band solo like Travis Barker in order to be considered 'good'. Or, maybe he can hook a double bass pedal up and play rolling 32nd notes at 180bps for 4 hours to impress idiots.
