In a recent Munro Live RU-vid video, Sandy Munro and Tom Prucha discussed some new 4680 Cybercells details including a Cathode change that they are confident signals a dry process manufactured cathode. So, has Tesla finally solved the dry process on the cathode?

I never worked directly on this project while at Kato but I was told 2 years ago that the main blocker for dry cathode is the hardness of the metals on the calendaring rollers. Anode is easier because copper is soft, but cathode metals have a tendency to damage or dent the rollers during manufacturing. This causes defects all over the electrode making it useless and then the calendar rollers must be replaced which takes FOREVER. But this is just hear say Idk for sure Edit: Manganese is the hardest metal in the NMC trio so connect your own dots there

Ceramic or ultra hardened rollers could help but they are very expensive and have other disadvantages in their even-ness. Which may negate the advantages a dry process brings.

Thanks for this. I have often wondered what it is that is holding up the dry electrode manufacturing process. Just like I'm wondering what is holding up the semi truck. And the lithium refinery. I'm always surprised that nobody asks these direct questions during the various presentations that Tesla holds each year.

Tesla may be buying cathode rolls to keep up with production, but it is still investing in cathode production - a truckload of electronics panels was delivered to the cathode plant in Joe T's July 1 video.

I am guessing that Tom and Sandy are not aware of Tesla’s contract for cathode rolls from a cell manufacturer. These are almost certainly wet process cathodes. I also am skeptical that there actually is no Manganese.

Most likely you are correct. The lack of Manganese doesn't seem to make any sense, so I think skepticism is warranted.

The electrode contract could be LFP cathodes. Tesla has plans to also manufacture their own LFP batteries.

To my info, the throughput and yield of cyber cell are very low whilch is around 20% of the original plan. The tab welding is taking too much time and it is the bottleneck of the process. Some bad cells are recovered by the dual welding to increase the yield which means the welding is the key challange and the increase of the welding speed is very very difficult. Tesla could not achieve target of the dry coating for cathod. Aluminum is not active material for Lithium storage but it is functioning to improve the life and safety of battery. Energy density is decreasing as alumina is incorporated. The energy density of cyber cell is lower than 2170 cell which means this 4680 cell is struggling to improve the life and safety. As the cell diameter is reduced, the life and the safety is improving. As observed by Tesla, the life decrease speed for 2170 based models are about 2~3 faster than 18650 cell based models. It is caused by the difficulty of the cooling. When the 4680 cell was invented, the heat was supposed to be removed through the bottom of the cell. However, the bottom of the cell is not utilized for cooling. The side of the cell is cooling for cyber battery pack. How the heat in the center can be removed with this design? The life of the cell will be challenged. As it is obserbed from the change for 18650 and 2170, 4680 cell life will be challenged. In order to come up with the challenge, the inactive component of Alumina is added and the energy density is decreased accordingly. When I look at the Munro live, I observed the tab connection part was upside down and some void space was incorporated in the pack. I guess, Cyber team intended to remove the heat from the bottom of the cell. I don't expect this approach is helping the cooling of the cell. Air cooling is not effective approch. On battery day of 2020, Elon stressed the battery will be cooled down through the bottom which is much simple approach for battery pack manufacturing. Hyundai is already applying the bottom floor cooling approach for e-GMP platform. One of the risk also raised by 4680 cell application is the total pack replacement with single cell failure. Since the yield is very bad, the possibility of bad cell application in the pack increase. In case of 2170 cell and 18650 cell, one cell failure in a module did not induced the total battery pack replacement. But the 4680 cell contains 5 times more energy and one cell failure is inducing total battery pack replacement. It is unexpected result. Hyundai e-GMP case, one module can be replaced. Such case is very rare, but tools are available to replace ond of module. Hyundai and Kia utilizing the cell which does not include alumina because the life and safty of the cell is much better than cylindrical cell. In my view, 4680 revolution is in the risk of total failure. As commented by Elon for the Northvolt order cancellation news by BMW, "very..." means battery is so difficult. He may gave up 4680. Dry coating is one of the component of 4680 revolution. Wet coating is like butter spreading on the bread and the dry coating is like spreading sugar on the bread. Dry coating requires more bonding and conducting components which are inactive for lithium storage. Accordingly, the energy density is decreasing. Also, the quality of the coating is not homogenious which is causing the uneven cell quality. Tesla is saying dry coating is applied for anode but silicon cannot be mixed. In order to recover the energy density drop, silicon needs to be added in the 4680 cell. As it is quite difficult to spread the sugar and cinamon powder on the bread in even, soreading the active and inactive materials in even is very difficult. I respect the revolutionary sprit of 4680 concept, but the realization of the concept seems flustrated.

On the topic of dry cathodes, Sakuu is dry printing whole batteries on pilot manufacturing lines and licensing the tech as seen on Munro live.

Well done 👍I agree that we should be very cautious about Munro’s claim that the latest CyberCell has a dry cathode. Seems a very odd claim considering all the evidence pointing in the opposite direction! I have been concerned with Munrows impartially recently. He seems to have got unpreceded amount of access to Tesla's top people and the factories. What did he agree in exchange?? And if he knows the chemical competition of the cells, why doesn't he know if there is PTFE in there??

How come you and James Ma claim the use of natural graphite in the anode vs. the Munro team and Jordan aka The limiting factor who got his information from UC San Diego, the use of synthetic graphite… I try to get my head around this two very different claims. Any thoughts on where this confusion might stem from? Cheers mate!

Tesla has MY Juniper ramp. Tesla maximising cell production while it ramps dry electrode NCA cathode - no issues with NCA for MS/X. The Juniper refresh including 800V/48V needs to go through the entire fleet. Would not surprise me if Tesla is testing MY juniper production equipment at Austin for rapid sequential roll out to Fremont, Berlin and Shanghai.
