They are NOT benchmarking the Rivian dude. The Rivian from the photo is from the reporter of the kilowatts (you can see the logo on the back window). He literally chased and tailed down the CT to a stoplight and got out of the Rivian to take the pic for his article 😂 you can literally see there's no driver in the Rivian on the photo AND the door handle is open precisely because he got out to take the photo 😂

The bed of my truck MUST accomodate 8' lengths of 2x4s, sheetrock, PVC pipe, 5:15 etc. Why don't manufacturers comprehend this? Also these prices are insane to the everyday workman, and that is who you need to build for and market to! Make it practical and affordable! ~Abilene, Texas

Have the CT ordered day 1 and cant wait to get it. Honestly a nice size Frunk would be preferable for shopping bags, tools or smaller work gear which the CT doesnt have and fear they just roll around...though im sure aftermarket suppliers will have fixes. I put a reservation for the Fisker Alaska, that is the perfect truck to me with midgate. May sell my CT when that order comes through.

It's just a matter of time before a savvy automaker rolls out a more affordable mid size pickup. The same BEV platform could also be used to produce mini vans and SUV/crossovers. In fact, I can foresee a work/utility truck model going for about U.S. $30,000-35,000 after incentives.

Last I had a pickup I was towing 5ers a style of trailer where the front of the trailer overhangs the pickup bed. I don’t think you can do that with the CyberTruck. The Rivian would probably have the pin off axel so it wouldn’t be able to handle as much weight, but being able to do it with reduced weight is better then not at all. I am also enamored of the off road ability of the R1T although to be honest I don’t do that so it would be dumb for me to buy one for that…but…cool! The Canoo looked cool last time I saw it, but I’m not sure how practical it really would be. The R1T still looks cooler. In the real world price would factor in pretty hard, and the R1T costs a LOT more then the CyberTruck, I don’t know the Canoo’s price.

I love your channel and enjoy your videos. As for the comparison between these 2 trucks, I for one would prefer the Rivian. I strongly suspect most who ordered the Cybertruck aren't "working men/women". If that is true, a 5 feet bed is plenty enough. The reviews of the Rivian have been fabulous and the workmanship outstanding. As for the look, the Cybertruck is not aging well and reminds me of a prop from an '80s movie. I will eat my sleeping medicine, set my destination. Put on sunglasses and sleep, to and from work every week. I’m fairly excited. The Cybertruck stubby nose might offer less frunk space. The bed cover coming off the roof helps with volume below it of course. Lacking the length in the bed and in front of the rear axle to mount a 5th wheel trailer hitch, to me is HUGE downside. Same as with the Rivian, I might as well get an SUV version then. Towing behind a pickup truck with a standard behind-the-vehicle tow hitch to me is an utter waste and defies the whole point.

As far as I can tell, the biggest problem Tesla is going to have with the cybertruck is the fact that contractors are going to beat them up and break them. We all know Tesla has horrible service and parts availability. Ford and Chevrolet have a huge advantage in this area.
@larryevans6739
@larryevans6739 Год назад
I honestly do not think contractors will buy many Cybertrucks. Trucks have been body on frame for a reason: It flexes and bends before it breaks. Not having the body panels provide structure also means they are easier to replace when damaged. The horizontal bed sides help with loading and unloading. In combination, racks and attachments are easier to use/install with traditional truck construction. And if Tesla continues to not offer vehicle-to-load, that eliminates one of the big advantages of an EV truck.

Pick up trucks that are really used will be largely non EV. People do need to cover large distances with loads in many cases on a time schedule. Cyber truck at nearly a foot longer should have a bigger bed. As far as I can see the Rivian has a much better looking cabin area and quite frankly I think Tesla screen based controls are a big turn off. Rivian for me. Once I thought the CT looked cool and I was excited about it, but now it just looks ugly .... and dated. We've been seeing it for years.

I suspect that the CT's shape will give it better range for a given battery than more standard pickup truck shapes, due to aerodynamics (but maybe the Canoo shape will prove good; dunno). Efficiency is still a big thing for EVs; you can't just put a massive battery on a brick at a competitive price. And price affects the ability to sell at volume.

Some things to consider: 1) Here in the USA, lots of people buy pickup trucks, but use them as cars. So things like bed length etc, are secondary. 2) pickup owners are notoriously conservative about styling. The Silverado and F150 have evolved over the years but are still recognizable as the trucks they were 40 years ago. Rivian bridges the gap between new tech and older styling. Remember designer Raymond Loewy's MAYA principle: Most Advanced, Yet Acceptable. I think they will both sell, just to different markets. As for me, I want a Canoo. I hope they make it!

Although I believe your comments do make sense and are mostly true, my opinion is that the big pickup market in the US (plus Canada and even Mexico in North America) is humongous. Thus, even if a relatively large percentage of pickup buyers do not like the Tesla, the potential sales is still a very big number. On top of that, many people who aren't traditional pickup buyers are lining up to get a Cybertruck. EG I have two close acquaintances who have never owned a pickup but preordered their Cybertrucks long time ago. Other points are disruption of competitors and ability to produce at low cost. If Tesla gets a decent quantity of F150 and Silverado buyers to switch they will be taking highly profitable clients from their competitors. When you combine that with the assumption Tesla's efficiencies will again allow them to manufacture at lower cost than competitors, they have big leverage.

@Cloxxki
@Cloxxki Год назад
They can make a short range one that's cheaper, but Tesla haven't been the greatest at making true to "starting from" promises. Just kike with Semi and Roadster, their specs promises were based on a SUPER HIGH density 4680 cell, which today doesn't exist. They're making a small number (where have I heard this before with proprietary Tesla cells?), but they're just not higher density. With that, they're not CHEAP as they envisioned. Now to make a 500 mile truck on NOT amazing 4680 cells...will take a lot of them. All they can do is true and make the vehicle light (it will eb heavy) and aero (it may not even matter, so heavy). 500 miles probably takes 180-200 kWh. That's a lot of battery. Now with Roafster the problems isn't the range promise (620 mi is doable) but they named the CAPACITY to be 200 kWh!!! Not that long after Elon said cars would probably never get more than 100 kWh because it's pointless with a good charging network, faster charging, etc... 200 kWH of not all that amazing 4680 cells...will fill that little Roadster to the brim with batteries, no room left for the Space X flying car cold boosters, so that's a problem.

At my income level getting one of these trucks would be a financial stretch, so it’ll have to be a perv kinda thing. The Rivian and the Lightning (a silver Platinum edition) would rarely be used as trucks. The garage would be turned into a quasi shrine with padded walls and mood lighting. There would be 1 cabinet, filled with fine oils/waxes, microfiber polishing cloths made from rare Himalayan mink pubes and incense. The Cybertruck strangely enough seems like an off-world work truck to me. I could USE this thing and feel little remorse seeing it covered with mud and dirt. It would get larger tires range be damned and as many motors as I could get. Gimme the “Plaid” fellas and where can I find a bed mounted wildlife cage for my chimps? Also, I want to call Canoo and talk them into loaning me a prototype to start an OnlyFans with. I’m sorry I wrote all this. I feel shame but I’m hitting send anyway

Rivian - no way. It’s a nice truck but super pricey for what you get. The bed is small and the bed cover doesn’t work. I saw one when they first came out and it’s just like my Honda Ridgeline. No thanks, I’ll be waiting for the Cybertruck.

For urban cowboys who use a truck like a passenger vehicle plus occasional light hauling, electric trucks may be appealing, but my sister is a veterinarian who routinely pulls a loaded horse trailer from central North Carolina into the mountains. She wouldn't get a hundred miles out of an EV this way, so she'd need to stop to recharge for half an hour or more, likely more than once, on these trips. Stopping for half an hour to an hour every four hours is one thing. That's a meal break. Doing it every hour several times on the same trip is unbearable. No one in their right mind would use an EV this way, so my sister will never buy a Cybertruck or an F150 Lightning or a Rivian or any similar vehicle, not until range and charge time improve a lot anyway, never mind that a Rivian starts at $75k. Threatening her with mandates can only turn her against EVs entirely. EVs just don't handle this use case, and this case is not unique. They're fine for many other use cases, and markets are wonderful at providing many solutions and ultimately converging on a few solutions, even a single solution, if and when a few solutions are warranted. Unfortunately, people who want to dictate decisions for everyone everywhere never understand this need. I can carry two bikes on a bike rack on my Mazda 3, and I have done it many times. I could presumably use the same rack on a Bolt. Using a Rivian for this purpose is not green at all. It's greenwashing.

Cab forward designs can be nice...until you get into a front end collision. 😱 I'd buy a Rivian in a second if I could afford one. Wish Rivian made a "truck for your average middle class Jane and Joe." Just leave out all the unnecessary "luxury" accessories.

Are there any people who use pickup trucks for real work? Please, tell me whether you think that Cyber truck is a good utilitarian vehicle that you would use. To me it seems that Cyber truck has too much sharp angles that can hurt someone during loading or unloading. Rivian seems to have more volume in its trunk. Plus, Cyber truck has very high sides that can also severely obstruct quick access to the trunk.

There is an advantage to the standard style bed. Those sails are going to get in the way of many normal things you can do with normal ones. Besides the pain of not being able to reach stuff from the sides, you can’t “overflow” cargo or add a hard cover that can serve as another deck or roof rack type thing.

R1T has its frunk, while the Cybertruck has no or little storage in the front. Many owners of the Rivian say they use the frunk regularly. Apples and oranges I guess. For an old person like myself, I just wouldn't be comfortable with the 'sick looks' of the CT. But a Rivian (R1S in my case) - meow!

Cybertruck is the ugliest thing I've ever seen, Canoo is easily the sexiest BY FAR. The thing I find most vexing about Cybertruck though is the tonneau cover as well as the poor midgate design, I was hoping for so much more on both fronts. The Ram 1500 Revolution gets a very honorable mention here but like most prototypes, it is almost guaranteed that they will not keep any of the useful design like the saloon doors, the generic floor design, etc and the idea Dodge has for 'software charges' is of course insane (who is truly willing to pay a software charge per month for things like heated seats, come on). If I could choose one, it would definitely be Canoo but Cybertruck is probably the closest to reality.

In America, builders need beds that can haul 4 X 8 foot sheets of plywood, dry wall and paneling. The Canoo (bless its heart) has a bed extension allowing this. It would be an affordable upgrade to the Cybertruck to give it an additional bed extension; carpenters prefer the load to be fully contained, not hanging over.

The R1T is heads above the CT for car-topping big items like kayaks. It has four mounting positions for crossbars, and combined with some after market rack accessories, one will be able to configure the crossbars such that an 18' kayak can be centered perfectly on top. The CT looks like it will only have mounting points in the back, meaning if you have a long kayak, it will stick off the back of the truck quite a ways, creating a not so safe driving situation. That's a big deal for anyone who plans to carry a kayak or canoe or even long pieces of lumber. I don't see the bed size to be that big of a deal. The Rivian has TONS of storage. Tesla has enough devoted fans that will buy anything Elon puts in front of them, but I think Rivian is going to be a huge company one day as well. Time will tell.

The Viking and I are on the same wavelength regarding truck practicality. SUV and pickup design is very inefficient. I'm curious how much difference in aerodynamic efficiency there is because the Rivian chief engineer I know seemed to imply that it was pretty good aerodynamically but clearly the useful space is better organized with the Cybertruck. Soon we will know by comparing range and battery kWh capacity, and useful volume. The Canoo truck is also compelling but certainly also divisive design wise. Anyway this is an interesting video with the comparisons... The only thing that's going to really affect my decision and also be disappointing from a potential customer standpoint is Tesla Cybertruck pricing, but at least from a long TSLA investor standpoint it's a very strong positive because they will probably have the highest margins of all the competition by far.

Cybertruck spec'd w 200kWh 4680 battery (2.5x a Y pack), claimed range is 465 miles which is 300 miles on the highway, empty. Why so bad? Rivian's largest pack 180kWh. A Rivian towing a trailered Mustang had reduced range down to 120 miles before needing a charge (youtube). You'd think then then Cybertruck should get appx 150 underload. The 200kWh pack means for each cybertruck you lose 3 Model 3s or 2.5 Ys, lithium is limited.
