The Tesla Cybertruck has now been shipping to customers for about 3 months. Before that, the only other options were the Rivian R1T and the Ford F-150 Lightning. Although the Chevy Silverado EV has also started shipping, the two most popular EV trucks are the Cybertruck and the R1T.
With these two electric pickups, there is a lot of cross-interest between the brands. If you are in the market for a Rivian, you are probably also considering a Tesla. It is natural to compare the Tesla Cybertruck and the Rivian R1T despite them being very different vehicles.
The Tesla Cybertruck is a full size truck, as compared to the Rivian R1T being a small truck. They both come with a rated range that is similar, and feature many of the same capabilities. But when you look at these trucks side by side, they could not be more different from each other.
Rivian has brought to the market a rugged adventure vehicle with traditional smooth lines and curves. The interior is appointed with premium materials and has some very serious off roading capabilities. The Cybertruck is also a rugged adventure vehicle, but its design departs from traditional looks of the industry. It features similar capabilities as the Rivian R1T including cooled seats, air suspension, insane acceleration and much more, but it is packaged in a very futuristic straight lined design.
Now that the Cybertruck has been out for a few months, we have had a chance to see and experience everything it has to offer. I caught up with my friend Ben @gjeebs recently to discuss the Cybertruck, and more specifically his thoughts in comparison to his recently acquired Rivian R1T.
We met with our friend Greg @greggertruck to pick up his truck fresh from the wrap shop. They wrapped his Cybertruck in a matte black PPF, and smoked out the lenses giving it an absolutely mean look. Driving the truck around can make it difficult to have privacy as it seems to be an attention magnet. The Rivian on the other hand blends in nicely with the existing cars on the road, leading to a more uninterrupted ownership experience.
After 3 months of ownership, this Rivian owner has determined that he loves the way the Cybertruck rides, the added space in the back seat, the 4 wheel steer, and the acceleration. The thing he loves about his Rivian that makes it better for his lifestyle is the gear-tunnel that he is able to nicely secure his golf clubs in and keep them out of the elements without taking up precious interior space.
In the end, we both agree that these two brands benefit from being new comers rather than legacy driven. The software on both cars is excellent and the value of software updates over time add considerable value to the trucks. Of course there is also the fact that both these vehicles now natively charge on Teslas Supercharging network, making them much more appealing than most other EV's that do not have that capability.
