Wow, that noise difference after raising the window was pretty cool to witness. Tesla's thick all-glass rooves are brilliant, I love how they actually make the vehicle's structural integrity higher & improve safety standards above pretty well all other designs (Awesome T-Shirts btw hahaha, I love it) These info snippets are great, keep em' coming 🙏🏽
it's not that great once you own it. it doesn't absorb sound as well as a hardtop, the glass still don't reject that much heat so it's a hot greenhouse and the glare on the model y makes the full roof glass almost useless. all you see if the front row reflection. nice in theory but terrible IRL. i ended up installing a reflective shade in my model y roof. reduced my AC use significantly
The panoramic view that the model offers is quite interesting. You get the freedom of a convertible and the security of an enclosed model. If the glass is armored even more wonderful. Perfect!
As an automotive service technician, I love learning about the how and the why, in all aspects of life. Videos like this teach a lot of the reasoning and thought and care that go into every decision at Tesla, and that is a big part of why I love Tesla.

By 1937, safety glass became mandated for all cars. Changes occurred slowly throughout the years with innovations like the curved windshield from Studebaker in the 1940s.

Though it was a super iconi thing to happen that day. Well the best part for me was they cyberquad and they missed their mark on selling them like hotcakes. I am sure they could have sold 10s of thousands of them if not more on preorder if they were priced around 3 to 5k.

Great to hear from the team themselves! I will say that this design intent is not translating to the end product, based on my experience with my 2018 Model 3 and 2021 Model Y. Even with the double-paned glass in the Model Y, it’s quite noisy in the cabin at highway speeds. Phone calls are not pleasant. There are a lot of variable factors, like location, temperature, tires, etc. but I’m happy to get in touch with the team to help determine how further improvements can be made. It is still a fantastic product, and with further improvements it will get even better.
I agree but wonder if it’s not the glass itself but all the connections/seams. My 2022 LRY isn’t particularly quiet either. It doesn’t feel “tight” And the top of my head gets very very hot March-October in Austin, TX

They are learning and improving day by day. I think they've got 1-2 years till they reach the build quality of established manufacturers but it's good progress so far
It’s a mixture, I think. There are areas where they still have to catch up. But there are many other areas where they are miles ahead of the competition already today.

Electrically-operated exterior mirrors could be folded by switch to ease driving in narrow spaces. 'Parameter steering' was a system which made low-speed driving easier by reducing the effort required to maneuver in speed-sensitive situations such as parking. Rear-parking markers, or guide rods. These rods extended from the rear corners of the trunk lid when in reverse, providing the driver with a guideline for rear maneuvers. In 1995, this system was replaced by the sonar-based Parktronic system which measured the distance of the bumpers to nearby obstacles. 12-way powered, heated front seats, with 3 setting memory functions and lumbar support. Windshield wipers with heated washer system. Later models also included rain-sensing windshield wipers. Electrically-operated automatic-dimming inside rear-view mirror that tied into the seat and steering wheel memory. Heated exterior mirrors. Later models also included auto-dimming driver's side mirror. Orthopedic seats were an expensive option from the factory but consisted of several different air cushions in the seat that the user can inflate and deflate to find the perfect driving position. Dual-zone climate control. Four-zone climate control on LWB models. Reclining and heated rear seats on LWB models. V12 models also have the four-place seating option, which allows fully adjustable rear seats, lumbar support and rear sunshade control. The center seat has been replaced by a burlwood center console, allowing a 2 + 2 seating format. The climate control system could be set to operate for 20 minutes after the engine had been turned off. Electric rear sunshade. Rear passenger illuminated vanity mirrors. It's rare to invent new stuff nowadays, even though, Tesla still invents a ton of new stuff. Google didn't invent RU-vid either, but they own it. Mercedes F1 does videos like these with team members that work in different areas and are always really interesting. Keep these types of videos up! They are great for inspiring young people for potential career paths as well.
I am all in for videos like this! Makes me appreciate Teslas even more. As a soon-to-be Model Y owner, this just a reassurance of what goes into those fantastic cars. Nothing is even close.
@@theadventureinsider ANC works by generating anti-sound so that it and the noise cancel out. However, because sound waves follow the principle of superposition, sound may cancel out in one place and be amplified in another (constructive and destructive interference). If noise, anti-sound and your ear aren't lined up, there's definitely spots without destructive interference. I suppose no car has a sound system capable of "beam-forming" anti-sound for up to (2+3)*2=10 ears. From my understanding, it's therefore impossible to have ANC in cars, at least with regards to higher frequencies. Of course, I'd love to be proven wrong and learn about how ANC in cars *does* work, but I have yet to find a detailed explanation.

Love the glass roof and I can tell the difference from a 2019 model 3 to a 2021 model Y with the double paned thermal glass in the side windows makes a huge difference.
Finally some content of engineering and how things work and why for people to learn design and emphasize passion - not just some marketing nonsense that will force you to buy something you don’t need or want.
Who knew that the windshield/glass making people had to work with the autopilot team, that’s pretty cool! I hope they make more of these types of videos
When companies take the time to create things, that is cool. But when they create an informative and engaging video of the same for possible customers or interested individuals alike, that is when it becomes truly appreciable
Glass isn't inherently brittle and fragile - that's just the most common types. Metallic glass can be hard enough to scratch diamonds rather than the other way around.
I testet this in a model 3 2019 long range AWD. I can 100% confirm that after closing the window next to a drilling op everything went quiet. It's truly amazing how it was like this from the start and nobody knew.

On M3 and MY, the acoustic dampening layer is only on the front driver and passenger door windows. The rear passenger doors are the standard single pane of glass.
Having seen competitors car's insides (For example Porsche Taycan and other), being an engineer and designer, I must say WOW, there are worlds between Tesla's advanced cars and any other car manufacturer's chaotic, often dangerous attempt to put something together quickly. Nightmare to see a Taycan or VW ID3 or Ford Mach-E open as an engineer. Makes you feel both sorry for the future customer and the mechanic who has to bite his teeth when sorting out the nightmare Those companies made, trying to compete with any Tesla from today's excellent tech and quality wonders to even the first Tesla Roadster, 17 years back. TESLA and SpaceX function very similar. It's impressive, the speed of innovation and focus on safety and quality in both companies.
Like most other car manufacturers were already doing thermal and antinoise glass. But still people will be impressed when Tesla shows they do it. Power of hype. P.S. To all haters that will hate this comment: You hate it because it's true. Tesla is amazing car but you should not think they reimagined the car. They made it drive autonomusly and made very good bateries and engines. Everything else has been on a market for a looooong time. You just didn't knew that.
They really did lol. 2014, model S rated “best car ever” by consumer reports. 30k cars with laminated acoustic glass. They completely proved everyone wrong with the concept of an electric car. They made the first 5 star safety rating SUV and then went on to make the safest car on sale. They then went on to put sell the Toyota Corolla with the model y. Clearly, they are doing the right stuff
I have sat only once in a 2019 Tesla Model S and IMHO the experience was sub par as far rear seat comfort / acoustic dampening is concerned. Its not as quiet as everyone made it out to be. I still think there's lot of improvement required especially for insulating the wheel wells and A/C pillars to make it truly quiet. At this price point customers will expect Mercedes levels of quietness / comfort. Hope Tesla would look forward to improve upon these attributes which otherwise is an excellent vehicle.
