This is a How to video on how to charge the Tesla Model S battery module and or a DIY Telsa Power Wall being charged with our C600B lithium battery charger. This charger is charging a Tesla Model S battery Module. The voltage of the Tesla battery module is 25.2v and the output of the SolarGeni C600B is 25.2v for a 6s 24v lithium battery pack. This is the correct charger to use when charging the Tesla Model S 25.2v battery module.

It looks like a Sigineer inverter and the make 15kW ones now. Jack Rickards' youtube channel has a whole series on these inverters and even had Sigineer add a Telsa battery charge feature to them. You should check out his Power Safe 100 - 20 Tesla batteries providing 100kWh power.

Jeff Smith It’s a solargeni inverter and I’m very familiar with Jack in his channel and yes I did have these made to charge the Tesla batteries it’s called a charging algorithm. This inverter has been in development for three years and I am the only one in the world that has it.

MPP's LV2424, which is the inverter/charger/ATS I'm using can be manually configured to the right voltages. 24.2v max, cut-off at 20.2v to keep it from maxing out the high/low voltages. Charging max amperage is config at 30A from both, grid and PV input.

thanks for the comment. This is an AC charger for back up or for someone who has a lead acid inverter charger. Ivan I've been using the Tesla S modules for quite some time now and impressed with how they work. I have more vids coming out with these units.

Where do you have these for sale? Can't seem to find it on your website. I wonder what the max charging amps the model s module can take... 10A is going to take like 20 hours to charge from dead to full. If it could be doubled to 20A, then that's going to save 10 hours.

Robert Anderson Simple answer is a 6S lithium ion bms. Then you would need to know how many amps you were going to pull and match the amperage. If you were using a 24 V 3000 W inverter you would be looking at about 125 A.

I got the Magnum MS4448-PAE setup, i can set the right custom voltage for 2 modules in series. And by the way 25.2 volt/modules is the absolute max charge for these modules, you should not charge them up to that point i set them at 24.4 volt / modules !

Thats a nice inverter charger you have. BTW you WANT to fully charge ALL lithium batteries to make them last longer. Under charging them is not doing you any good other than costing you a 1/2 of volt and reducing their life expectancy. To be safe you can charge them to 25v or even 25.1v without any real life loss. These modules are designed for 25.2v full charge.

@@WesThatTechGuy Ask Tesla how often you charge the Model S to 100% (16)X 24 Volt Modules. UNLESS you going on a Large Trip!!.They also say 605 Charge on their Cars is more Efficient and Batteries Last Longer.

I wish I had found your channel a long time ago. I have been building Headway 38120S battery packs. I have been successful finding a BMS for 4 cells but I would like to build one with 8 cells and can't seem to find a BMS I can use for 8 cells. I am a Ham radio operator and the LifePO4 packs are fantastic for portable use. Do you have any suggestions? I was looking at your S120 charger but noticed it says 12v for the LifePO4. I would think that it should be 14v wouldn't it? I am enjoying your videos. ~Ron

Assuming you want 8 cells to double your capacity? In that case you only need a BMS for 4 cells. - The 12v chargers charge to 14.6v.

Thanks Ron! Yes the S120 comes in many voltages and chemistries. For lifepo4 you would choose the 14.6v LifePo4 S120 charger. In the battery biz we always refer to 12v, 24v 36v 48v etc but yes for lithium its different. We than have to go by series and calculate voltages. but we still use the same terminology to keep it simple. lithium and lifepo4 voltages are close but not the same so we say 12, 24v then ask which chemisty and series in order to make the right choice in chargers. your pack sounds like a 1p4s (14.6v) and you wan to build a 2p4s maybe. so same BMS. if you are going to the 24v running 8 cells 1p8s in series than it would be 24v battery or 29.2v and an 8s charger and BMS. Hope this helps.

Ron Langner BMS Battery, out of China has bms’s for LiFePO4 batteries specifically made for 38120’s. I have made high amperage e bike packs with them and can verify their performance. hope that helps!

Having a tesla s module or two would be great for off grid solar....but I would not trust even charging on a 6 s lithium pack without a balancing circuit that could keep up to the 18 amp charge rate you have....sooner than later, your pack WILL fall out of balance, trust me. Your charger cannot tell when a cell group exceeds 4.2 volts...only when the total voltage is over 25 will it terminate the charging. E.g. 4.4, 4.0, 3.9, 4.5, 4.0, 4.2=25 volts. Your charger shuts off at 25 volts....but as you can see, 2 cell groups have been over volted....damage has occured, or worse, you have a fire. You CANNOT safely charge this pack in this manner, without CONSTANT supervision of cell group voltages. I am unfamiliar with these tesla modules. I CAN see on your video that there is something on the top edge of this module....but I could not distinguish if this is a bms or cell balancing circuit...could you tell me?

Nice statement! Yes that is a cell balance lead on the module. This is just another way to charge a battery pack. You would always want to use a BMS with balance charging on any lithium pack.

25.2 volts will Degrade These Modules Overtime. Magnum.MorningStar.Victron... Inverters and Solar Chargers Have Option To Set All Type Of Battery Settings in Them!!!!

this is not true. ALL lithium ion should be charged to there max voltage. Most are 4.2v charged. Yes those inverters do have adjustable settings.

I'm converting a commercial bus into a MOTORHOME so I'm going to put 8 to 10 395 watt 48 v solar panels on my roof with 6 of these teslar batteries do u have SOMETHING that my panels would plug in to so I can charge the batteries as well as a land supply hook up if sun is not enough to charge?

is there a difference between model s battery pack and model 3 battery pack when it comes to DIY Powerwall usage? Anything to consider when choosing a battery pack?

I've not used the 3 only the S. the 3 is 23S46P so there is 1,058 2170 Cells. as the model s uses 444 18650 cells and the newer models x cells use 516 I believe. Hope this helps. But this all differs between the 85, 90 and 100P tesla cars

Hey Wes, great video. I was wondering where you got the connector, ribbon cable, and balancer unit. I have two Tesla modules and would like to set them up so I can monitor the cell balance but have not been able to locate a video or post that clearly spells out how to set up and connect the connectors and ribbon cables to the connector ports on the battery module. Also, where did you get the parts needed to put all this together? I and all the other DIY'ers out here would really appreciate your response.

Urban, thanks! You can get them on Amazon no problem or even at the local RC hobby shop. just a simple 6-8s lipo balance cable. Just solder the ends onto each series 1-6. Look at my 18650 battery build and this will give you an idea of how to do it. I solder on a balance BMS to that battery pack. just repeat the process pretty much for the 6s tesla.

Well thats a bit tricky. I do have them available but they are not cheap. Lets start by asking how many watts and volts inverter will you be using IE: 3000w @ 24v or 48v etc. then go over to my website and send me an email and we can talk better from there. you can just use the contact me at the bottom of the solargeni.com website. If you have a bank of 4 Tesla Model S battery packs do you need a charger for each or will 1 charger charge the whole bank?

Yes it will. You would want to get a high amp model to do 4 of them unless you want a slow charge.

This charger here in the video only gives out a CC/CV of 10a/25.1v. So you can do the math and see how long it will take. I will be doing a video on the time it takes to charge 1 of these cells this week. I will post my findings in a new video.

I have a 24 volt trolling motor on my boat. I think this would work perfect. Better than two 100lb bulky 12 volt deep cycle agm batteries. Got get that charger too. I have several of those cell checkers and voltage alarms for my RCs. Great video, thanks!
