Learn how to install the official HEPA filter in your Tesla Model S (2016 or newer) if you don't have the PUP package (bioweapon defense mode).
Due to the 'Camp Fire' in Paradise, California, we have horrible conditions right now in Roseville/Sacramento areas. Without a HEPA filter installed, the Model S did a horrible job at filtering out the heavy pollution, in fact, when turning on the A/C it made things much much worse when not in recirculation mode. Driving at higher speeds made the results unbearable.
I first tried to install my own filter by going the DIY route, and picked up a cheap ($20) FPR 10 filter from Home Depot (14x30x1). In order to fit it has to be cut down to 14x27.5x1. Even though it was a tight or even perfect fit, it had little impact on filtering the heavy wildfire conditions. The AQI reading was 130-210 depending on what speed I was driving. Insane!
After installing the HEPA filter purchased directly from Tesla, the AQI went down to 8. INCREDIBLE results.
Sadly, I bought my Tesla Model S on July 15th, less than 10 days before Tesla automatically included the PUP package in their base models for only $2500 starting August 2018. If I wanted it, at the time it was running customers $6000. Total bummer but I'm stoked they still allow customers to buy this filter separately. It is truly a lifesaver.

Thanks for the video. It's perfect. Was able to get my filter in and done in about 30min based on your instructions. Much appreciated. One issue I have is that I cannot get the fan speed to 11 on fresh air, even using steering wheel. It goes back to recirculation as soon as I dial it up to 11 on the steering wheel.

How did you purchase the HEPA filter from Tesla? On the Tesla online store, it’s a $500 upgrade, which comes with Bioweapon Defense Mode firmware (they will update it for you upon appointment if you purchase the $500 upgrade). Are you saying you purchased just the filter from Tesla? If so, how did you do that and what did it cost?

Hey Evan, at the time I had called in to my service center and ordered the part direct and picked it up same day since they had it in stock. The cost was $200. Last week I actually ordered the full $500 upgrade (Bioweapon Defense Mode) and they came out to my house for the install. I kept my old filter (the one you see me installing in this video) since it comes with a new one. I live in northern California and the recent fires have made our air quality unbearable and I was still smelling smoke in the cabin which proves for some reason the HEPA filter does not work without the firmware update. I don't know how, or what it does differently but the car now works 100% when the BWD button is engaged. It really is worth the upgrade.

When I activate bio weapon mode, the fan goes through the roof which is good if you have to go past a fire or other hazard. For everyday use, do you think the air still goes through the big hepa filter or if you must absolutely run the fan at crazy speed to get it to go through the good hepa filter?

Hey Patrice, I'm not sure what the car does when the BWD firmware is installed but there is an absolute difference with the BWD button. I was still getting smoke in the cabin during the fires this season even with my own install of the HEPA filter. So because of that I ordered the full $500 upgrade and now the HEPA / BWD mode car works flawlessly.
