What is it like to drive 5000 Miles across North America? What is it like to do it in a Tesla Model Y? What is the charging like? Can you even camp in the back? The answers to all of these questions lay within. Here, In park one of a four part video series, I show what it’s like to drive from Anchorage, Alaska, back to Western Massachusetts. The drive was exceptional in terms of landscapes, the people, and the car itself, while challenging to handle physically and sometimes time consuming to stop and charge.
I have done this drive many times over the years in a traditional gas powered car, and while the drive is noteworthy at any point no matter what vehicle you are driving, doing so in a fully electric vehicle pushed the boundaries of what is possible. The journey exposed the weaknesses of driving electric across varied landscapes and various weather conditions. It showed how far some regions have to go before we can expect widespread Electric vehicle adoption, and how easy road trips can be when fast chargers are plentiful. The total trip took 12 days, and while some of that time was my own driving fatigue and needing to take longer and longer breaks towards the end, the first 5 days involved slow charging and a lot of waiting around.
In part one, we start out in anchorage Alaska, cross the Canadian border, and end at the Northern Rockies Lodge in Muncho Lake in British Columbia. An amazing drive. I hope you enjoy.

What a legend. Alaska is where I ended my trip, starting in Massachusetts. Met someone living in their Tesla in Alaska.

Really great video. I drive in my model 3 from London to Edinburgh and think that’s a long drive 😂. Seeing the stunning scenery of Alaska and the other states you drive through is amazing.

Keep the music volume low and comparable to your talk volume. I had to constantly lower youtube vol when music started and increased when you started talking. Something that can be better. Just small feedback. Looking forward to more Tesla content

Good video, just a couple of critiques, it seems like the exposure level is pretty far off, everything seems too bright or washed out. Volume levels are rough at times as well, the music seems quite a bit louder than your voice so the video was too loud at points. I would've loved every minute of this trip, even waiting for hours to charge. The quiet and wilderness would just be perfect, and I'd probably have my Nintendo Switch or SteamDeck for the really long waits.

Call me crazy, something tells me this guy likes protein 😂 Great video and really enjoyed it. The advice about the types of charging cords, etc needed for Canada was really helpful. I think the longest trip I’ve done in the model 3 was Bay Area Ca to Las Vegas. Honestly it wasn’t too bad, especially using the autopilot. It might sound silly but it actually did make a massive difference in how fatigued I usually would feel if I was driving myself. I felt way more refreshed and alert. In terms of how the video was constructed, unless you’re trying to get famous and millions of subscribers, do your videos how you want to. It’s your creation and you’re sharing it with us, not the other way around. Again, thought the video format is awesome! Can I ask what made you switch from the Subaru to the Model Y? I also have a Crosstrek along with the Model 3 and I’ve taking the Subaru out to the desert, up into the mountains, etc.

Great content… Agree on the distracting clip inserts. Can you provide more detail in your upcoming videos on the nerdy data like your arrival SoC and average consumption.

Maybe try the inverse charging: rather than “topping off”, aim to arrive at your next charger with 5%-10% of charge and then only fill up to what you need (with your comfort margin of course) until your next charging stop. And I dig the clip inserts!

If you had gotten to that first DCFC in Glenallen and it was offline did you have a backup plan?

Thank you so much for this video. I was thinking of making this drive in my MYP but I was afraid of the lack of infrastructure. ...and it's not controversial that you don't get EPA range while going up and down hills at 80mph on very rough terrain, blasting the heat. That's not how ETA ranges are calculated.

You should have bought the Tesla charge plug adaptor set, fits all the different plug options.

I have a Model 3 and I love road tripping it but I'm in Connecticut and Tesla has stations all over the place through most of lower 48 states so it's super easy...I would just rent an ICE car for a trip like this.

Dude to maximise range you must use cruise or auto pilot. Use the energy display (all three tabs) at 50 mph you should match expected range. If the temp is minus 10C battery conditioning is a big concern. Most tourist info centres in B.C. Have free level 2. It's an adventure.Enjoy it!!

I have a 2017 Model S and have yet to be harassed, or "keyed" because I have an Electric Car (knock on wood) but I bet seeing someone stop suddenly and turn around would make the hairs on my arm straighten up. Glad nothing happened to you.

Likely that TT 30 adapter you have is 120 V and should be 240 in order to work. Look at the Parkworld adapter for this, it says it’s made for EV’s. I have it and it works fine on my Model Y.

35:42 multiply CCS1 max 60A to 390V (your Tesla battery's nominal voltage) = 23,000W = 23 kW, which is what you are getting

I third that 👍. If this young man can accept some constructive criticism it is that the constant and overly immature b roll clips make the chances of growing the channel very remote. Even my 18 year old son wanted to change the channel after 15 minutes 😅
