The main difference to me is sitting low as in a sedan vs sitting higher as in a SUV. After driving a SUV for years, I do not like getting in a sedan where you feel like you're sitting on the ground. Thats a major point for me in choosing one over the other style.
Benefits and drawbacks to both. Any bucking or rolling (vehicle rocking forward and back or side to side) is amplified with higher seating position by 2 to 3X depending on height difference. I attribute that to why a prior GF didn't get car sick going over the Sierras on windy roads in my BMW low sedan vs her SUV.
Let me simplify this video for you. The top three reasons Tesla Model Y and 3 are selling so fast: First, they’re relatively cost effective with rebate and current pricing. Secondly, Tesla’s charging infrastructure. The fear new owners have is running out of power. It’s unwarranted given most people drive less than 200 miles per day but new owners don’t think about that. Once they realize Tesla has charging stations everywhere that unease goes away. Third, direct to consumer purchase. This is huge and nobody talks about it. I don’t know anyone who enjoys the hassle of dealing with car dealerships. Those are just my opinion of the top reasons Tesla is dominating the market.
Plus the are kind of the only game in town. I know several tesla owners and most of them came from bmws mercedes etc. All of them said their next ev won't be a tesla again. Tesla just isn't an exciting brand
You missed the biggest one: It’s an incredible car that nakes everything else seem old. And that include other electric cars. There is a short learning curve, but once you get it, you realize that the Tesla team has really thought about how a car should work. From user interface to the driver personalization (I share our Model 3 with my wife), to really useful storage, to the driver assistance aids to the utterly effortless charging both at home and on the road, it took all of two days to convert my wife from being a Tesla skeptic to the position of considering nothing except a Tesla as a second car.
I'm not saying it's a bad car. I among others want a fun quirky car. Tesla seems too sanitized. My previous cars were Audi, impreza, mini cooper and now BMW. All cars were not perfect but definitely had their personalities.
@@stevelouie5928I have the BMW IX ($92k) in my driveway right now while my BMW X5M is getting maintenance again, with 45k miles on it. BMW knows I own a MODEL X. This BMW IX is dumb. The exterior looks like a KIA and the interior in the front has a pass through and feels like a FORD. I have owned BMWs for over 25 years, I have no idea what BMW was thinking with this iX. My wife laughed at it and then when she she got in it she laughed even harder. The screen in the interior is bad.for so many reasons. Software is terrible.
Keep in mind, I own 2 BMW X5M series, 2 Mercedes, an Audi, Aston Martin and a Maserati. My wife won’t drive any of them and they are all newer. She only wants to drive our Tesla Model X and refuses to drive our BMWs. My kids don’t want to drive in any car but our MODEL X. Just did another 600 miles road trip yesterday in it. Kids love getting out at the charging stations and seeing other tesla. They make people smile smile.😊
Wow! Kathy did the phenomenal job, with the videography! I'm impressed! I almost forgot it was Kathy holding the camera and some professional video shooter... She moves so smoothly with the camera. Great job! 👍
Dave, I can fit my full size Mountain Bike in my Y with the hatch closed and both wheels on the bike. The trick is to open up the well where I believe the third row would go and put the front tire down into it at a 90 degree angle (therefore the bike is backwards with the handlebars lying flush). It will close every time.
Thanks for the video Dave! I am going to buy a Tesla in the next 4-6 months and this really helps me decide which one to buy. I am 68 years old, so how it works and how I sit in the Tesla is very important. Also, like you I am tall, so it is very important how you get in and out of the Tesla. I will keep you informed along the way as my wife and I get our first Tesla. BTW. Loved the road trip videos!!!
Thanks for the comparison Dave. I’m 6’4” and 60 and still relatively spry and an empty nester. Plan to get a Tesla but still really enjoy driving so I’m thinking a Highland M3.
Test drove the rwd m3 and the awd lr y recently. The m3 just felt more fun. Kind of like a go cart feel. The Y felt more utilitarian, covering more use cases. Didn't handle turns like the m3 did though. Both are great but different use cases.
I would describe the Model 3 as a slot car. I raced slot cars back in the late ‘60s and the Model 3 has all the characteristics I remember: instant throttle response, regenerative braking, and a feeling like it is glued to the road. I’m a life-long car guy who has owned some classic muscle cars as well as some of the most iconic motorcycles of their respective eras. The model 3 reminds me of some of my bikes, you modulate speed (both acceleration and braking) with the throttle. It feels alive in a way no modern turbo-4 car can. We have been looking for a second car. One that seemed like a good complement to the Tesla is the Volvo S60 Recharge. On paper, it seems perfect: 450 combined horsepower, 30 miles of electric range. Driving it was a real disappointment. The electric motor isn’t bad, but its not up to pulling around such a heavy car. In gas mode, it was terrible. It has great power once the turbo spools up but what I want in traffic is instant acceleration, 50 years of riding motorcycles has taught me that the ability to react quickly is paramount. The Volvo turbo lag is awful. In hybrid mode, it’s better, but nothing beats pure electric power, it has spoiled me. The Model 3 feels smaller than it is. Is it perfect? No. The interior is stark and the one great outstanding feature of the Volvo is seats that are so much better than anything else available, Tesla could could definitely offer better seats. And there is, definitely, a gap in Tesla’s product line between the 3 and the S. A mid-level model with some more features would be welcome (I miss the ventilated, massaging seats of my previous car). Finally, I absolutely *love* regenerative braking. It makes driving really engaging. It takes finesse and encourage smooth control inputs. This is a car that rewards involved drivers.
@@bunkie2100 yeah deciding on cars is hard. I currently have a Rivian R1T. I like it a lot but I think i’m trying to make it be too many use cases. I use it to tow a wakeboard boat, drive mountain roads in the winter and as my daily commute vehicle. Plus try to make it my “fun” vehicle in sport mode. It’s fast for sure, but it’s still a truck. I think Model 3 + gas tow vehicle as a combo is my next move.
@@bunkie2100great review. I think what you are missing is that TESLA has feng-shui. Shuffling it off and disregarding it as “stark” is missing the entire design epistemology of engineering first principals, best part is no part and the best input is no input. I own too many cars, 2 BMW X5M series, 2 Mercedes, a AUDI A8, Maserati, Aston Marin and a MODEL X. The Model X is the only car the family ever wants to take. My family calls the buttons/levers and dials old fashion and dumb. My wife hates buttons now. She loves her profile setup where everything is dialed in for her. No other car can do that with buttons and dials. That type of input is a thing of the past. It’s not luxury, at all.
Really enjoyed the video. I think the 3 is the better looking one, but your points about the Y are spot on. I am anxiously looking forward to the new and improved 3.
Hello Dave, first let me say that I really enjoy your videos. I have a RWD Tesla Model 3 sitting in my driveway right now, largely due to your video with your son Kyle about the car. Your reaction to Kyle gunning the car was priceless. If I am not mistaken the base frame of both cars are the same, so put a hatch on a 3 would be a lower to ground Y. I get it that the Y is puffed up, and sits higher. Please don't take offense to my comment, love you guys.
I just purchased a Model Y. Love it! It’s very comfortable. The model 3 is more sporty and not as useful as the Y. The Y has massive amounts of storage! I own a Blue model Y long range. Incredible!
I'd love to have either of these..but of these two, top choice would be a model 3. But, the driver's floor board has a raised area that goes across it- that's where I rest my foot and it's uncomfortable. The model y driver's floor board is completely flat. I can't justify the extra cost for the model y though :/
5:00 Abig difference when sitting in the back of the Model Y is that the front seats are about 4 to 6 inch raised up, so it is veray easy to slid your feet under the front seats compare to the Model 3.
I ordered a blue model y with out driving one first, the day after my 5 mo old blue model 3 was totaled, waited 6 mo for it, a 22 long range, just turned 60 and the y was a lot easier to get in and out of also liked the higher driving position but I hated the Y with a passion, the sight of that blue turd parked in my garage where my good looking model 3 used to be made me angry every time I looked at it. It drove like a 3 loaded with bricks, also there was something unpleasant about the acoustics , that is not present in the 3, so I traded it in on a used model 3
Getting in and out of an EV is totally different for shorter people. I’m a foot shorter than Dave so when getting out a Lucid, my head always hits the low sloping A pillar. Lucid didn’t have easy entry/exit during my short ownership. This feature in model Y/3 is very helpful for shorter people. Taller drivers don’t need it.
I’m big tall but not crazy tall but model y is perfect for me more than the model 3 if I have fun I’ll get a model 3 but right now I want a small suv my sister crv is meh still sporty than my accord 1.5 sport but I prefer model y all the way.
Thanks for this great video. All very clearly explained. I'm a 2014 Model S owner, but am thinking about a new Model Y. I was thinking about color choices, and your white/white car sold me. You mentioned the Model 3 not being a hatchback. I think Tesla dropped the ball there, but considering the amount that were sold, I guess they are well liked anyway. I personally would never buy anything other than a hatchback, regardless of the make/model.
Model Y is just like an SUV my body fits perfect, you step into it rather than stepping down in a Model 3, when I first went for test drive schedule it was a Model 3, I am so glad I got into a Model Y that day after driving Model 3, the difference was astronomical, I first thought about price difference and when I saw the sticker price I was shocked, the difference was only a few thousand..
I am 6'2" and I sat in a Model 3's passenger seat once, and it was not comfortable. My head hit the glass roof, and I had to bend over, so it wasn't cool unless I would drive the car all the time :)
Rented a Model 3 during a stay in FL, but I always wanted a Model Y. I was really impressed by the Model 3. I think I’m going to stay with the Model Y though, just because of the space. How is it keeping the white seats clean?
Dave, why don’t you consider getting an after market trailer hitch, which I know you wanted but didn’t get. I am sure there is a shop that does that on the western coast of FL? I am sure you can get it installed for less than the $1,000 they charge at Tesla.
Since you mentioned the Lucid, you should sell/trade that for the Taycan. Yup that's a better fit for you. Get a nice Taycan to play around with. The Lucid is a nice car but for you, it's just a car that you only benefit if you go road tripping a lot. The Taycan is sporty and efficient. You'll enjoy it more.
Wish someone would create a DIY to replace visors which are pretty worthless as they have the curve in them. Also those door handles. Cool looking but awkward to open drivers side doors for a right handed person. I’ve owned M3 since 2018. So you end up pushing round opening area and grabbing w left hand….two hands to open a door. Funky.
Great information Dave, I have a 2023 model 3 LFP and love it, currently waiting for my 2023 model Y long range, I am very happy with the ride comfort with the model 3 LFP and since you drove your model Y to Florida how would you describe the differences in the ride comfort.
1. Minimalist design and has a timeless feng-shui you can’t put a finger on in a Tesla that people love. It calms them. Most people don’t care about buttons knobs and sliders. Young kids especially. Minimalist approach = software. 2. Speed of acceleration and charging network the CCS is really a dumb plug and my wife won’t even consider another car with a large bulky cable & plug. She hates charging at anything but a TESLA charging station in our MODEL X. 3. Software, software, software. Not just software updates, but Meaningful software updates you can customize with your phone. The driver assist in TESLA cars are so good. Just did a 600 mile road trip yesterday and it felt effortless in the MODEL X with my 78 year old dad, 7 and 9 year old boys and my wife. I own 2 BMW X5Ms, an Aston Martin, 2 Mercedes, an Audi, and a Maserati. Hands down, the family chose the MODEL X, not the most expensive either.
Thanks for the overview, agree with you that between the two the Model Y will suite most folks. It's great that there are so many options out there for people's different needs. I found similar results in my Model Y overview last year. Would be great if you had a look and let me know what you thought of my take on it. ☺
Alright I’m ready to go seriously look at a Model 3 or a Model Y. Can someone please summarize the must-haves and must-avoids for battery types and manufacturing location (i.e., not Fremont?) of these products.
Keep up the great content Dave. Curious if you considered the “standard” AWD Y we have here in the US? Why do you like the LR over the AWD Y? It seems to me for most “daily” drivers the cheaper Y makes a lot of sense.
He originally ordered the awd y but it was taking to long to get it because his wife wanted white on white, so he ordered a long range instead. I have the Austin built awd and it is a great vehicle and probably what most people should order. I haven’t needed the extra 50 miles for what I drive.
Very valuable video, as usual. You could be a very good saleman...LoL !!! I want to by both of them now !!! 6:00 Very true, I wis the Model 3 was a hatchback, it would had certainly then out sell the Model Y. --> Note: Could you compare the seating and trunk of the Model 3 against the new Toyota Prius, of very similar size but which is a hatcback. I think that the Model 3 is a sedan because, at the time of it's design, the Model 3 was using the BMW Series 3 and Audi A4 is a benchmark. Without looking at the popular Hyundai Ioniq which is even smaller than the Model 3, but was a hatcback.
Thanks for the information, I like the lowrider model 3 , but my wife like the higher sitting model Y , I guess it's all about your taste .. what a bummer when the wife doesn't give you the key hu?
Your feet were on the peddles in the model 3 and the model y not touching the pedals . Not a fat comparison! Clearly the over head space would me more it’s a taller vehicle. Thanks for the review but be far and not game it.
My friend is more of an SUV kind of guy because of the higher sitting position and although I've been driving sedans my whole life I'd appreciate that ease of ingres and exiting the vehicle. My whife on the other hand doesn't care about the hight that much.
Lmao what? they are successful at selling the cars everywhere I go new teslas with temporarily plates and at one place I know of there at least 10 teslas parked in one parking area but I can agree with trade in though
But wait, the car would still be smaller so can’t agree with that statement. Am I missing something? The Y is physically larger in almost every dimension
If Camry brings in this mileage, n EV then Tesla can shutdown its biz soon, as these Tesla cars bring In that comfortable feel with their sizing n ofcourse the functionality,.
Yes in the winter big time. Well documented. Summer? Not so much even with AC on. Whatever you think you will get according to Tesla, I would subtract 50 miles of Tesla stated range from that for the summer and 90 miles of range for the winter. (Highway driving at normal speeds) Tesla is super optimistic in the EPA cycle testing; Not real world based on my and many others usage. If I am wrong, then you will be surprised to the upside :). Check out my son Kyle’s testing of the Model y at 70 mph for a realistic baseline. But then ask yourself, do you really only go 70 when on a road trip? Higher speeds is exponentially thirsty. And cold weather is like a pro pick pocket dude at Times Square. Be realistic :)
@@dconner9 Thank you. I have been watching some of your videos as well as Kyles. I followed your road trip to Marco Island. My parents had a place there for many years. Thank you for the response to my questions.
I don't think they'd be very popular without the Federal and some state subsidies. In my state it totals over $10,000 in subsidy; and the only reason I'm considering a Model 3 over say a Prius. I am not sure I can stomach stealing from other citizens who can't afford a new car so I can buy and EV. I know i wouldn't go to 10 less well off families and take $1000 each from them so I can buy a Model 3 so having the government do it for me stinks equally.
The Y looks like a bloated, beached whale next to the 3. Especially when both are white and parked next to each other. Turned me off to the Y when I bought my 3!
Dude, you are 6'5" and you spend half the video on how you fit in the car. What's the point? You need to look at some stats regarding avg height....5'9"
I actually would prefer the model 3…..i have always had smaller cars….however, i bought my LRMY simply because it was a hatchback! After driving my prius, i have fallen in love with that hatchback! It takes some getting used to in sitting higher with the model y …but I’m ok with it!! I LOVE my model Y!!!! I have had it for over a year…..and I couldn’t be more satisfied!
Being 6'6, I actually traded my ram crew cab and bought a model y because Dave made it very informative info and similar build. Just past 5000 miles and just love it and don't miss driving my truck that feels much more massive
I’m very curious if you would ever consider the cybertruck with it polarizing design. Then you don’t miss the utility of a truck. We own a model X and I put an order in for a Cybertruck to replace my BMW X5M. I’m just curious…
@@GET2222 it's on my radar ,but I don't know the price or dimensions or really to much info. I try to keep up updates for it. I am excited to see it unveiled, but I am not going to be the first to buy one. With the model y I wanted to wait till they got all the kinks out and then make the dive. I would do the same for their first truck design
We looked at both models but ended up purchasing the Y for the size difference. Would love to see Tesla develop a real SUV in the future. I know they have the Cyber Truck coming, but a real SUV kind of in line like a Honda CRV would be nice. The Tesla Model 3 was just too small for us so the Model Y was perfect. Both great cars.
