You do often get the opposite problem where the review car has every crazy expensive option ticked and people don't realise that you can get it with sensible options for way less. You really need the base price, the price of the most popular spec and the price of the max it out spec.

I actually ordered Volvo couple of days ago. The way it rides and the fact that everything works as expected... every time as driven the car. Audi was shortlisted for quite a long but the google car took my heart when compared to the audi user interface. As I am just starting my breakfast I can tell my phone/ google to warm up my car and off you go! As a scandinavian living near arctic circle one issue not very crucial in uk is framed door Windows Tesla does not have. Far easier to open doors during the winter if u cant heat up the car in advance for whatever reason. But thanks for a good review!
@@70WhySoSerious07 Well, I ordered the XC40 & they gave the 2024 model a significant facelift. I was able to change my order to get the 2024 version. Charging & range being the main reason. Still waiting... sorry can't help more.
I guess you didn’t know you can control the temperature though the Tesla app on your phone to set the temperature and use all the cameras as a security feature. It’s a basic Tesla feature 😊 but very helpful on a cold day or hot day…. I live in Las Vegas
Very thorough, fair, and as far as I can tell, unbiased. I think this is my favorite CarWow video so far. This is genuinely excellent. Seriously, a great comparison and review.
@@michelbruns It actually does, especially when you charge on the road. Some fast charging stations like IONITY charge you more per kWh than a regular gasoline car would cost to refuel.

Completely agree with the verdict but I still don’t understand why people find it handy to change the amount of regeneration on the fly. I’m driving a model 3 for 2.5 years now and I never had the urge to change it.
I drive an ICE car with flappy paddles. I often use them to shift down while decelerating to increase the rate of deceleration without having to brake. It's a bit like one pedal driving but using your hands instead. If you have true one pedal driving then I guess you wouldn't need it to change regen intensity.

Mat consistently measures excellent braking distances. Wonder if something is off. While lower 30s is believable, sub-30 is freaking supercar like. Other channels never get such stellar results with the same cars
I completely agree. Just found a 60-0 list and 27m cars are something like a 911 GT2 RS (991), Corvette ZR1 or Ferrari SF90 Stradale...... not a Volvo C40 Recharge 🤣
Thank you, Mat. Excellent review, as usual. Based on my research Tesla Performance has 500-550 HP, not 450HP. I've found dyno test that showed 520HP and a review from Italy showroom. The reviewer said Tesla rated Performance model in Italy at 550 HP. The battery size should be 75kWh usable with around 83kWh total capacity for the latest models. IMPO, the suspension tuning of Tesla Performance is great. It's a perfect balance between cornering performance and comfort. I wish the steering would be more communitive to have a more direct feel to know what front tires are doing.

Yeah especially when most people don’t by base especially with this shortage for cars, if you configure your own car, you might be waiting months. Most people are now settling with whatever is in stock
Well, an interesting test. I stil would go for the Volvo: sharper brakes, better accerlation and a clean Scandinavian feeling inside. Google in the car works quite fine and there might be more updates coming up.
Cant argue with the Tesla's superior tech and efficiency but the styling leaves me cold and I would find the hard ride irritating on the UKs cratered roads. Volvo looks awesome and is good enough in all other areas so thats where my money would go.
Tesla tech is no better than anyone else now. In fact it’s worse, because no Tesla has Matrix headlights, like the majority of other EV makers. Most EV’s now have remote apps, OTA updates, ‘self driving’ etc…
@@SDK2006b just saying, teslas come with matrix lights, they just dont have the software for them ready, but in theory they will get that with an update some time in the future
See that’s the thing about the Tesla. It is not the best looking. In fact, at some angles the car just looks weird. But functionally, as an appliance. It is an extraordinary car. Here in the states you can even get a Y with a tow hitch and 3rd row seats. We ordered ours in that configuration. I’ve put 8,000 trouble free miles on it so far and didn’t have any of the build quality issues that people talk about. I love the way how the Q4 looks. And I love the cheeky nature of the XC40 Recharge. But the Model Y is clearly the better car, and it’s not even close.

I have a Tesla Model Y and I absolutely hate the stiff suspension, it makes the interior rattle. I don’t think there’s a better alternative in this generation, so I’m keeping it for now until something new and softer comes along.
Its great to see Tesla getting some viable competition! I don't have the budget for these cars (and in fact we can't get any of these in NZ yet anyway) but really enjoying my Tesla M3.

@@BostelD - and a simple Google search can confirm your question before you typed it here. "Volvo has taken a strategic minority stake in Carwow"...to help with its online sales.
Given Volvo's part ownership in CarWow, like any ethical organization, Mat should be transparent when reviewing Volvo's and tell viewers that Volvo has a part ownership in CarWow. This video may have been done prior to the announcement.
He didn't seem to gush about the Volvo though. In fact, the TSLAQ people would probably be accusing Carwow of having an under the table deal with Tesla...
Not really, Tesla measures boot space up to the roof ( like Land Rover I think) , Audi and Volvo measure it up to the load cover. That boot is nowhere near 850 L if it had load cover.
Ordered the Volvo xc40. What is better with the C40 is actually the rear view is great compared to the 3 in the video and our dog will love the trunk to cruise around. Designwise the c40 looks more cool. But the test ride was in the xc40.
For me, all the good things the tesla does is wiped out by the looks and the interior, especially the cockpit. I hate the fact all the controls are done through the touch screen. Just means you can't use it while it's moving, not safely at least. I also hate how the speedo is on the touch screen in the middle of the car, instead of in front of the steering wheel.
This was said alot when iPhone came out. Now you would never buy a smartphone with buttons. You get used to it very fast. Now when I get in a car with alot of buttons/knobs I get anxiety
@@someguyonaguitar I think that's very different. When driving, you ideally want buttons that you can feel so you can have a quick glance to see where it is then feel, and use while concentrating on the road. You can't do that with a touch screen unless they use a different screen that can mimic the tactility of a button/dial. But even that aside, I don't like how EVERYTHING is done through the touch screen that often takes several screens and buttons, when in a current car they can be done with one lever/switch. That's just really bad design covered by gimmicks so people accept it. It's the same way apple's top left back button standardisation in UI design is now shown to be a terrible design because the phones are no longer sized to be used with one hand.
Hey CarWow, when you review EVs you ALWAYS have to mention charging time at HPC, form 10 to 80%, NOT peak charging power or AC charging time!!!!!! For example, while both the Tesla and Audi can charge from 10 to 80% in less than 30min, the Volvo takes more than 45min! This really makes a difference when doing long trips
My husband looked at the Q4… then realised a Peugeot e2008 was as fast as the 35 and range wasn’t that different. A fully kitted out gt e2008 was €18,000 cheaper vs Q4! Appreciate it’s not a like for like comparison but still! Peugeot made way more sense.
I think the Audi has the best overall package. Only second best in many aspects but best compromise overall. The lack of physical controls in the Tesla is a deal breaker for me. But the efficiency is awesome. Wish the other manufacturers would catch up.

The Volvo looks the best ,then the Audi second ,not so keen on Tesla but it's definitely the most roomy car here by a mile and huge boot as well, out these 3 it be the Volvo for my choice it beautiful 👌👍🏴
Although the styling is a bit off, the Y wins hands down. Pleasantly surprised by the Volvo though - seems a very good electric car despite the ICE platform on which it's based. There's few cars like this now where they're as good as, including the ix3.
It's sad that the Volvo is not a ground up electric car because it could be a real competitor of the Tesla. They even have a front boot that the audi doesn't even have even though it's a new platform...
@@nicixofficial The new larger electric Volvo platform will be out soon! (This October or sooner hopefully.) It's called the SPA2 platform and should remove most of the constraints of building an EV on an ICE platform.
Most traditional car manufacturers have still not understood the critical importance of efficiency and in particular, a true super-low aerodynamic drag coefficient. The first time the owners of the Volvo or Audi will hit the motorway, freeway or Autobahn, they will be in for a very unpleasant surprise: The range will drop dramatically with the higher speeds. The stupid box shape of their cars, particularly that massive wall shaped grill at the front, is obliterating efficiency. At 120km/h (75mph) you have double the drag force than at 80km/h (50mph), so half the aerodynamic efficiency. That is the reason for the no-compromise aerodynamic shapes of the Tesla cars. Smartly engineered to be functional and as efficient as possible. It also helps with top speed performance (on the Autobahn) as the car cuts through the air much more easily than most of its competitors who are trying to push a massive shoebox shaped car through it.

The major points of the rear of the volvo and Tesla are they have full sized headrests which feels 100x more comfortable then those small headrests in the Audi
Fact: I worked before in Fremont factory, then I relocated my family to Austin, and now working in TEXAS GIGAFACTORY, and I will tell y’all that the “QUALITY here is way better”, as it has much advance robots, tools, etc… and the people here in Texas are very hardworking individuals & meticulous about their work, period. I love the electric Volvo and yes, I was underwhelmed by the infotainment system. I wanted the Audi Q4 but it kept getting delayed so after 6 months of waiting, I received my Model 3 at the end of December 2021!
@@justinm.8970 Nice, good decision 🙂We have a heap of Model 3's on the road here in Melbourne (Australia) but we dont have the Model Y available here yet. I can only imagine what LA is like 😂
@@RyanCowan you don’t have the Model Y yet? I think Europe recently got it. The Y is everywhere here too and it’s nice-looking. It was out of my budget because I think they were only selling the performance version when I ordered my 3.
@@justinm.8970 yeah fair enough ! Hopefully we get it here soon when the Shanghai factory ramps up again. Looks like we are getting the standard range Y thankfully, so might be able to afford it. Did you consider the voice enabled controls? Eg, in the volvo you can just ask it to turn up the heating, the fan, direct to places etc and is very responsive
Teslas more or less still always appear to be one step ahead of the EV completion despite others having many years now to not just play catch up, but even surpass Tesla in producing great all round EV products. Performance, range, practicality, tech and now half decent quality and competitive driving dynamics.
@@relansis6962 That has almost zero relevance. Owners of old Alfa Romeo's are also super satisfied. Only because they accept the rust and unreliability. Also, people who pick a specific brand or model, generally speaking, tend to justify or defend it.
3:45 Matt, maybe you were just using the steering wheel movement as an example of fiddly UI. But it's a bad example. Not only is this something you seldom ever do in a car (and some people never do) but in the Tesla, the steering wheel position is saved to your driver profile and automatically sets itself when you get in the car. So... not crap, actually awesome!
That is so true. I never get why so manu journalist use that example. You only do that adjustment once in your lifetime. He could choose the example of the glovebox, which is the only example of where a button would be nice.
12:42 oh come on! There is some numbers trickery with Tesla as usual. Its bigger, but over 2x larger volume than volvo's boot!?!?!?! You do have eyes, do you? My guess is that they are measuring it to the roof and probly every single hole in it, while volvo measures to the shelf and only main dimensions. Its not the first time that boot capacity sounds wrong. You should check that out a little.
I see there are aftermarket comfort suspension kits for the Model Y for 2000-2500 USD. This will most probably fix the ride and it will still cost less than the other two with similar equipment.
@@lhd4278 It would be good to have a choice, but not having too many options is part of the reason why Tesla can grow so quickly, and they won't offer options while they have such a huge backlog...

Thank you for doing the '3 fully grown men in the back seat test'. I've ordered a Model Y and it's nice to see a real world representation of space in the back.
Could you drag race the polestar 2 performance with something like an s3 or maybe an rs3,I own one my self and would be interested in seeing how it would keep up with some other performance based cars.
As always great test and videos Mat. However I think it would be fair to mention, that in terms of boot capacity, the numbers for the Audi and Volvo is how much space there is UNDER the boot cover, but for the Tesla this is not the case since it hasn't got a boot cover... So the 8xx Liters for the Tesla is how much space there is up to the roof or window
If we only were to compare how long these cars would go on a full charge, the Tesla would crush them. It wouldn't be a competition because the other two would quite simply suck in comparison
What I really like about the C40 is how clean and distinguished the styling is. Compared with the toad-like Model-Y (Which I do actually like in the performance trim) and the rather busy Q4, it looks fresh out of a 3D animation. Some of the C40's shortcomings (range, dynamics, infotainment) are improved by the Polestar 2, which also uses the same vehicle platform. (CMA/Compact Modular Architecture)
Why would you want to change the regeneration level all the time? I find it a waste to have it on the paddle. I own a Tesla and am so used to full regen that I feel like I will forget to use the brakes on my older ICE car. I would expect the car to behave exactly the same way each time and not have to check what regen level I have active at the moment to decide how strongly I should break. This logical thinking and minimalism is precisely the reason I choose Tesla over others. I don't want unnecessary choices.
The one thing you missed in the comparison is the reliability factor! My Audi is the most unreliable car I have ever purchased and it’s supposed to be the flagship model! It’s been in the garage (Caffyns) for more hours than it’s been on the road. Which is why after 16 months of ownership and loosing £65k in depreciation I am getting rid of it and buying a model Y. I love your road tests Matt, but it’s these little things (haha) that make all the difference. Like the 3 year warranty probably due to the unreliability, like the £25 per month connectivity charge compared to £10 for Tesla, like the 2 year servicing cost of £370 when Tesla has none and like the bl***y diabolical back up from Audi when you have continuous problems. I could go on…….
This was a test of electric SUVs, and the model Y is really a sport saloon, It's the Volvo for me every time. Doesn't feel gimmicky inside, it looks and feels like a real car.
The Model 3 is a saloon. The Model Y is an SUV as much as (well, actually, more than) the others - the practicality comparison would have gone entirely the other way if the Y wasn't SUV capable.
I ended up buying a Skoda Enyaq. Design and comfort when driving is two really big check marks in my book. I really don't fancy the Tesla design on the model Y which looks like an inflated model 3 with wheels being too small.
I would still go for the Tesla. Yes they are a bit bland looking but I would rather it focused on range and efficiency over unnecessary body work that reduces range. The supercharger network along with all the tech makes it the really obvious choice.

That's true, but if you plan on keeping the car for years to come, I think Tesla is by far the worst one to own long-term. They're the youngest car company out of these three and it shows on all the unnecessary failures, recalls, and also their policy of right to repair.
I mean it was kinda obvious from the start. But this confirmed it all. That's American engineering! The only part I didn't agree on was his opinion on the exterior. I think the Model 3 and Y are a breath of fresh air compared to most body styles out there. I hate the grills of the other cars.
Nice! Tesla Model 3/Y LR and Performance batteries are 75KWh (net) these days (~82KWh gross), whereas the pre-2021 models had 70KWh (net) and 75KWh (gross)

In so many ways that are hard to explain in a comment, the Tesla is by far the best car. Hands down. It's not just about superficial looks and feel. Although the Tesla wins hands down at this also.
I’ve got a Q4 40 S-Line and it’s a great car😁 When we were looking at EVs the Model Y looked great but was out our price range, and the XC40 likewise. If I had the budget for a Q4 50 then I think I would probably have gone for the Model Y instead🤔
Unfortunately, in the US, the Model Y is now over $63,000 USD. An equivalent, fully equipped, Audi Q4 -Etron 50 (non-sportback) will only cost about $53,000 to $56,000. Additionally, the Audi is still eligible for the $7,500 tax credit while the Tesla is not. The sudden and drastic price increase has now priced many people out of the Y--which may or may not be what Tesla intended in order to slow demand. Unfortunately for them, many of my friends have purchased either the Kia EV6, the ID.4 or the Ioniq 5 (all of which still qualify for that tax credit!) instead of the aspirational Model Y. Tesla likely doesn't care in the short run but, if these other cars prove reliable in the long run and the charging networks continue to improve (even at the current pace), they will likely have lost those potential customers for life. It will be really interesting to see how and if Tesla responds when the real long range EV price wars start next year. --Disclaimer-- I purchased a 2021 Model 3 long range at the much lower price and took delivery in June of last year. I'm not sure that I can now justify the price of a matching Model Y that I had originally planned to purchase this year. The price increase has just been way too big... I'm now going to take the next year to weigh whether or not to keep my Model 3 in the long run because the plan was always to have two EVs in the house from the same manufacturer for the sake of simplicity. One more efficient runabout and a second bigger car for better utility and future family expansion. Last year, I knew that I could fulfill that desire with Tesla. Now I can no longer justify the cost. I could buy 2 Audi Q4 e-Trons, Ioniq 5s or EV6s between now and next year and STILL save anywhere from $18,000 to $25,000 or more compared to purchasing a Model 3 and a Model Y at today's prices. That's enough to buy solar for your house, start an investment fund for college or even purchase a 3rd vehicle. The available choices will only increase next year. I know, I know...1st world problems. 😄

I just picked up a Model Y and it feels much more like a tall Golf than any SUV I've been in. The jarring thing is pulling up into a supercharger and seeing a Model 3 nearby, they really are a lot lower in those, like more than it feels like it would be with them sharing so much of their platform/parts.
What was the psi of the tyres on the Tesla, I ask as mine was delivered with 48psi and reduced this to the 42psi stated on the door card and ride quality improved substantially. Also I have already done 6,000 I. The Model Y and I’m averaging around 280miles range (this is increasing at the moment with the warm weather as I actually got around 300miles with mostly motorway driving when it was over 20degrees), did you precondition the car before testing the range?
So typical of a european car review. If the handling isnt as good, “do you want your suv to handle” and if it does handle good “oh look an suv with such good handling”
The pricing is never totally fair, when I was choosing my new EV, the Tesla Y was incredibly expensive in leasing. The Volvo and Koreans top versions were around 750 month, Audi 850 / semi full option 950 and Tesla was 1.000 and more. So while I feel the Tesla was technically the best EV, the plain looks, harsh ride, lack of some options and 33% higher price tag turned me off. Still king of the hill Tesla, but I wonder were they would be without the chip shortages

Great video as always, just wanted to ask, Tesla seems to have different driving modes that impact steering, which mode did you have it on and have you tried the others too see of they were different?
@@hassanger8128 yeah I know that, however I asked about steering, they said it's sensitive and felt like a race car, which I like. However other reviews say that tesla allow comfort mode that adds smoother steering. I plan on just installing better suspension on my model y. Great video, as always. My company Tesla Model 3 Long Range is going back soon and I’ve got the choice of an Audi Q4, but only the 40 in Sport spec, another Model 3, but only the rear wheel version, or the 400+hp XC40 Plus. Got to be honest, as much as I love my Tesla, I think it’s time to have my first Volvo experience!
Tesla driver here and the wife really wants the Q4 when it eventually gets to the USA, but after several reviews, Audi really half-assed this car. No regen braking, a paltry 300hp, drum brakes🤔, crap plastic interior, iffy software with probably poor support and likely $70k in that trim tested over here makes this a bad buy..
