Tesla Owner Breaks Window to Escape Before Vehicle Catches Fire in Vancouver
A driver said he had to break his Tesla’s window to climb out as his vehicle shut down before catching fire in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 20.
James Lester filmed a video that shows a Tesla car with a broken window at the intersection of Mountain Hwy and Hunter near his distillery. The driver says to Lester that he smelt smoke and that the car’s battery had died before he got out.
Moments later, the car catches fire and the firefighters extinguish the flames.
“I had to smash the window, I kicked through the window because everything was stuck,” the driver says to an onlooker as he watches the vehicle burn. "The power didn’t work, the door didn’t open, the window didn’t go down. "
According to CTV News, Tesla didn’t respond to their request for comment on the incident.

Yeah I get the whole "watch the video about Tesla's manual door handle" and "learn your vehicle" crap but electric door handles are unacceptable and are a very alarming safety issue. Imagine having a car where a computer gets to decide whether it'll let you open the door or not. 🤦
@katherinesilens2994
@katherinesilens2994 8 месяцев назад
It literally doesn't. In this car, there is both an electric door latch and a manual door latch. The manual door latch in fact is the one most people gravitate towards pulling on their first time in the vehicle, since it's quite obvious and relatively conventionally placed. The car computer has no governance over it; you can open it any time you wish. The electric release is a smaller button, and placed on a small riser. It feels nicer, and has the additional function of cracking the window quickly before the door pops, which reduces wear and tear on the trim (since it's a frameless door). As a result, most owners use it and get used to it. This design is common to many vehicles in the luxury segment today, where there is an electric release doing anything from this simple window pop to actuating gull wings. In all such cases, there is still a manual release, as required by law. In this case, the owner simply forgot the manual release existed. Between panic in the moment and probably habit from using the nicer electric release, this is understandable, but it would be wrong to say the car itself decides.

@@katherinesilens2994 on Teslas: that manual latch exists on the front doors only. Backseat passengers get to become charcoal.
@katherinesilens2994
@katherinesilens2994 8 месяцев назад
@@beepbop6697 I understand your concern, but backseat actually has three options. The first is leaving out the front. This is the best for kids or adults in a hurry, and actually pretty easy to slide between the driver and passenger front row seats to exit given how big the clearance is due to the internal cabin layout being more spacious than an equivalent gas car. The second way out is the backseat does have an emergency release. It's hidden in the side cupholders which isn't a great design for accessibility but does prevent kids or pets from pulling it while the vehicle is at speed, which may work since it's an emergency door release. The 2023 version got a slight redesign to make this handle more visible and accessible once the mat is removed. It's a little too slow in a hurry for adults but does work in case of power loss or malfunction, like in a collision. The third option is that the trunk has a manual popper too, and the second row seats also have manual releases in 4 locations to get them flat and open to the trunk in a hurry. If you have a dog or something like that this is probably the way you want to get them out. This is also a good way for very large passengers in a hurry, if they are a bit too big to leave out the front. Is it the best design? I do think it could be improved and in some ways is a bit awkward. However the options are there, you are not trapped inside. The car is also programmed so doors also unlock shortly after a collision if they can.

It's actually fine to use water on EV battery fires. FPRF research backs this up. It won't cause the lithium chemistry to flare up, it's not elemental lithium. Water just doesn't work on a battery fire like it would a conventional fuel fire. On a normal fire, water attacks 2 of 3 elements of the fire triangle. Heat and oxygen. In an EV fire, the water is mostly just to keep the battery cooled down and do thermal control, preventing reignition. This is why it takes so much water: only 1 corner of the triangle. Upcoming battery chemistries like LFP or solid-state batteries which are more stable and less prone to thermal runaway will be even easier to put out.

I just watched the video and when looking at the comments, it appears some people were uninformed that the fire was unrelated to the battery. Notice that there is no fire coming from the bottom of the vehicle. I do agree that electronic door locks would not be a good idea in a no power situation like flooding or a fire, especially if the owner is not aware of the manual door release. The battery may have appeared to have “died” to the driver, as the fire may have caused communication to be lost between the battery and the computer.

There is an emergency manual door release in these cars and they're easy to find. I used to have a Model 3 and when I gave lifts to people, they'd often use that to open the door to get out because they thought the button to open it electronically (the default method) was the window button. I had to start remembering to tell my passengers to open the door with the button before they got out. I knew about the manual door release before I got the car because I'm a bit of a Tesla nut, but it's scary to think your average customer isn't briefed on the fact when purchasing. There are some knuckle headed comments about this situation posted here. A man's battery dies. He smells smoke. Next flames. He survived by breaking the window. And he lived to talk about his experience. I am happy for him, his family, friends, and community that he did what he needed to do in the moment to survive. Which is what the most natural response is. And yet people talk about manual overrides or preparing a head of time for these instances. Really showing how little understanding these commenters have about human response to a life threatening circumstance. Fire. So. Shut it. Be happy for the dude. My questions is how does a car with a dead battery catch fire? What's the manufacturers responsibility here?

I know that batteries for RC cars should never be allowed to discharge fully, they can catch on fire then too. And, never ever leave a battery on charge when it has reached fully charged. These batteries can be very dangerous and Li-po batteries are even more so and take a dedicated charger just for li-po high discharge rate batteries. Stay informed.

@@pixelic409 It's difficult to get reliable statistics, but there were hardly any EVs on the road in 2021, and they were all almost brand new, so it's no wonder there weren't many fires. The number has increased drastically since then, and if (it won't happen, but hypothetically) EVs ever overtook ICEs then you'd see the ratio of EV fires be much higher than ICE fires, especially if they manage to last as long as ICEs do as the batteries will be subject to all the wear and tear and abuse over the years. Also even if you're figure is correct (which i don't think it is), how many of those ICE fires were full blown dangerous fires, and how many were small ones that were easily extinguished and did very little damage?
