Just ordered a 2024 S Plaid with 19" wheels. Well, I ordered one with 21" wheels and then Tesla lost the car somewhere on a dock in Baltimore, so they picked an inventory one with 19" wheels for me instead. I'm not complaining, actually. Apart from saving me over 4.000 euro, the 19" wheels are also less vulnerable to pothole and kerb damage, they provide a smoother ride, they are quieter (less road noise) and it is easier to find winter tires (which are mandatory in some EU countries during winter season). The little extra range is a bonus, but I come from an S 100D so I'm improving in that field either way. If I get tired of the look, I can always put on some (aftermarket) 20 or 21" wheels later on and keep the 19 ones for winter tires.

Hey, could you do an alaysis video why the Model 3 Performance seems to be slower than a Model 3 Long Range at higher speeds? I had a Long Range and now have an M3P and can verify this, although I dont know why. Maybe the motors have a different power curve or something, I doubt wheels make a significant impact at speeds over 150 km/h.
@EmptyRoad
@EmptyRoad 2 года назад
yeah, the Performance seems to trap the same speeds at the quarter mile, although it is much faster to 60. This means the LR catches up in terms of speed above a certain speed limit. Carwow also did a video where the LR overtook the M3P ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-htGXA4McmGU.html

Amazing info, but I have a question. If I installed 20" wheels that are about 2 lbs lighter than the 19's, would my car have range identical/better than the 19's? 275/35/20 all around.
@EngineeringPerspective
@EngineeringPerspective 2 года назад
I won’t be able to give a specific answer, but typically a 20” wheel will have more rotational inertia as the mass is located at a larger diameter, even if it is overall slightly lighter. But the other items will be the difference in rolling resistance of the new tires and aerodynamic impacts.
@larryc1616
@larryc1616 2 года назад
If you're buying lighter wheels for performance reasons, why not buy a 19" that is lighter than the 20" and stock 19"?
@Muzzman1
@Muzzman1 2 года назад
@@larryc1616 I bought the 20's because I like the fit within the wheel well. The car came with 19's, but their look was not for me. BTW bought them for the look, knowing the performance would not be affected, but my concern was how will it do on range. I have yet to do a long drive to really test it out with the 20's

@EngineeringPerspective
@EngineeringPerspective Год назад
Yeah, the difference would be the rotational inertia and not the rolling resistance, but unfortunately I don’t have the wheel/tire info to assess
@LearningFast
@LearningFast 2 года назад
The rotational inertia definitely affects EV acceleration more the ICE acceleration because the ICE vehicles have a fly wheel. Therefore, changing the weight and size of those wheels doesn’t overcome the fact that you still have the flywheel. With EVs the lack of a flywheel means changing the rotational inertia of the wheels and tires has a much greater affect.
@EngineeringPerspective
@EngineeringPerspective 2 года назад
Inertia is inertia, the power necessary to rotationally accelerate a mass is independent and can be added to other rotationally accelerating masses. If you are saying that wheels are a smaller proportion of the total rotational mass on an EV compared to an ICE, that may be true. However the power to accelerate the wheel inertia will be the same.
@LearningFast
@LearningFast 2 года назад
@@EngineeringPerspective yes, that is what I am saying. If you reduce the mass and size of the wheel on the EV then it will be a greater proportion of the total rotational inertia than with an ICE car because the ICE car has a flywheel that adds a significant amount of rotational inertia.

If one has staggered (275's in the rear & 255's in the front) 21" Uberturbine wheels on a Model Y Performance and swapped them for 19" T-Sportline TSR wheels with NO aero cover what would you surmise based on the fact that the 19-in (255's) wheels are significantly lighter than the Uberturbine wheels. AND also the fact of moving from a staggered configuration to all 4 being the same 255's?
@jpscharged
@jpscharged 4 месяца назад
The aero cover is 95% of the highway efficiency improvement. Only improvements from light weight wheels would be around town and a minor acceleration improvement. The aero wheels are unbeatable on the highway for range.
@iamalmostanonymous
@iamalmostanonymous 2 года назад
I didn't see any discussion about the effect of tire compound and tread types. Rolling resistance is going to be the major contributor to road load at steady speeds. The 21" wheel comes with Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, which are not optimized for rolling resistance. What tires are shipped with the 19" wheels? While accelerating, the greater mass of the 21" wheels (with mass distribution further from center) requires more force to reach a given rotational speed vs. the 19". But at steady state, due to conservation of momentum, there should be little difference assuming both 19" and 21" wheels have tires with the same rubber compound and rolling resistance. For example, on my '16 Model S, I got better average efficiency from my staggered 21" wheels with Pilot Super Sports than square 19" wheels with Pilot Sport All Season 3+. I attributed that to the busy tread pattern on the AS 3+ and the UHP rubber compound.
@EngineeringPerspective
@EngineeringPerspective 2 года назад
This is a great point, I would need to look into the tire specs to know for sure. My assumption is that the 19” has a harder compound focused on rolling resistance reduction. Tires have such a huge effect on overall vehicle performance, I don’t think the average vehicle owner realizes.

Whats the real range between 19" and 21" by riding 70-100kmh per hour? 5, 10%? Also is it noticable difference in range between plaid and LR on same wheels?
@steveyaninek7563
@steveyaninek7563 2 года назад
First of all, awesome job explaining the size impact. What I have not been able to find is real data explaining the impact wheel weight has on performance (0-60) and range. So many manufacturers selling aftermarket wheels touting how much lighter they are than stock teases wheels. Saying improved performance and range but none have real data. Thoughts?? Saving 5-10 pounds per wheel, what’s the real impact?
@EngineeringPerspective
@EngineeringPerspective 2 года назад
Glad you enjoyed it. The challenging item with wheel weights is that the polar moment of inertia is what actually matters for 0-60. it is possible to have a lighter wheel but higher inertia. Manufacturers don’t give out this value. Secondly, for range, the wheel weight won’t be as much of an effect as the rolling resistance and Aero dynamics of the wheels. Most people choose performance oriented (stickier) tires when they choose lighter wheels, that will reduce range more than the weight benefit. If range is what you are after, the tesla aero wheel design with low rolling resistance tires will be hard to beat. All of these impacts can be calculated, but aftermarket companies don’t have the engineering horsepower to do it.

@EngineeringPerspective
@EngineeringPerspective 2 года назад
It would be a safe assumption to say this difference applies to the LR version as well. I have not looked up the data on the LR, but given all the external details are the same between Plaid and LR, i would assume they are very close. One thing I’m not sure about is the tire widths, if they are different, on the LR vs Plaid it may change some things.

Wait a minute! Good analysis, but your final statement was messed up. You should have said the 19 inch are good for range and only lose a maximum of 2 horsepower at 70 mph. You made it look like the 21s are better for Speed when the difference is negligible. Plus you left out that the 19s are more comfortable and less prone to rim damage from potholes.
@EngineeringPerspective
@EngineeringPerspective 2 года назад
Thanks for watching, Sorry it wasn’t clear for you. The 19 inch wheels use less power due to lower rolling resistance, however, that power difference due to rolling resistance is so small it should be considered negligible for acceleration.

the weight of the wheels and tires matter, but also where the weight is located, if more of the weight is further from the center, then the wheel will have more resistance to rotation. That is called the polar moment of inertia. Weight may be equal, but inertia may not be

I just looked into this... I also checked the German page and the difference is 9km so about the 6 miles you see. I believe this is because there are different rating systems in Europe. In the US we have EPA test cycles, in Europe they are using the World harmonized (WLTP). So based on how they test, it may offer a smaller range difference.
