This 550-horsepower 1968 Porsche 912 is getting all of its power from an unexpected source: the electric motor from a Tesla Model S P85. It was made by two Southern California shops, Zelectric Motors and EV West, which convert old Volkswagens and Porsches into modernized electric cars. It’s a new way to rescue aging vintage cars - though not everyone is happy with the idea.

The problem are the still small batteries. If the car is not aerodynamic and like a cabinet in the wind, you will drain your batteries quite fast.

I’m thinking about this from a VW kit car point of view but instead of a Beetle chassis it’s the battery flor and suspension of a Model S or 3.

Jaguar has an official program to convert one of their classics to EV. Totally reversible. It ends up a tiny bit lighter, more power, longer range as an EV.

Perfectly ruined a car usable for the track (not drag, but corners), by swapping heavy overheating batteries and slow high speed accelerating electric motors... Only electric brushless rc cars are better than gass, race cars are not imo. Would only be a fun burn out car with a power cord lol.

the problem with the 'authentic experience' argument is this: if the designer had had access to modern components he would have jumped at the chance to use them - so an electric Porsche is the continuation of the 1960s technical and aesthetic direction some components are prefect, others are evolving

So if the designer had better wind tunnels and software modelling, he’d make the car look different. If he had parts from the future, he’d make better suspension and put in a Bluetooth stereo. Basically we should restyle old classics with more modern bodies, put in LCD gauges etc.? I think that’s you’re argument right?

Great video! Actually hunting for a Mercedes 300 SEL from the late sixties with either no engine or engine failure to do something similar. But a vintage Porsche would have a similar appeal. I’d love a classic looking Autobahn-Jäger hier in Germany with an electric drive train

I've seen videos with EV West being interviewed before. Its good to see them still going strong. A Porsche 912 is very undervalued. Many rich snobs turn up there noses at a 912, because its not a 911. I'd like to see them do a 914. Many 914's have been electrified before just with lead acid battery's and not with the new tech. Thanks.

@@saulty-4726 That's instant torque.. the amount is not that out of the ordinary, the highest Tesla torque so far is P100D @ 920 lbft roughly. So yes, 4500 is a mistake unless you're measuring at wheels the size of a scooter

@2:51 ...Zelectric doesnt use the Tesla battery because it weighs too much. Instead they use a 32KWh LG Chem battery pack split into two 16KWh "Porsche-ins" 😉

My grannie had a VW Beetle so I was in one a lot as a kid. You don't want an "authentic driving experience" with this thing. Switching to electric makes a lot of sense in terms of sound and heat management.

This can definitely save a lot of old cars that just couldn't otherwise get out on the road. Save the original drivetrain (if possible) as a showpiece and but in the electric one to enjoy the car itself

customizing a car is the future. there are so many forms of cars over the decades and now everybody has the opportunity to own their favorite "oldie" using latest technology. imagine seeing a street full of vintage cars that don't pollute. the world would be a prettier and cleaner place.

I converted my 1974 bug with parts from ev west it was probably the easiest part of the entire car restoration :) it accelerates like a rocket looks great and has a range of around 100 miles for a pretty low price.

This is an amazing idea! I actually think pairing (and recycling) the vintage experience with the future of transportation could be an idea that really pops off as we keep moving forward into more green thinking. May actually even be better for the environment in the long run. Small impact, sure, but not nothing!

Kendall’s argument holds such little water it might as well be an upside down bowl. Many of his fellow vintage car aficionados will take a classic,including a rare model, and restomod it to an extent that it can never go back to its original state. These cars carry modern engines, updated hand built suspensions or even full chassis, and interiors with luxury or performance features taken from modern cars. The designers are heralded and celebrated at events such as SEMA, the Riddler awards, or even Pebble Beach, not to mention Barrett-Jackson. The museums even proudly displays these creations. This conversion is just another way to put and/or keep some of these beautiful body designs on the road. His snobbery is showing. He should tuck that in.

I’m a total motor head but EVs are faster then everything besides the hyper hybrids, which most can’t afford, let’s convert everything! The classic experience is definitely the leather interior, vintage knobs, glass, wheels and sweet body lines.

VW Beetle uses 25 MPG while in 2018 the average was 24.9 so I wouldn't say that they are bad.

the percentage of people who drive vintage cars must be tiny. so i doubt it has any real impact on the environment. plus those people usually have more than one car. they aren't grocery shopping with a vintage car lol

My dad tried to own a 66 mustang this last year as a daily driver I noticed his garage was had a thick gas odor from open bowls of carbs even went in the house a bit I felt sorry for his wife. Luckily he moved on my uncle has a 64 Porsche don't get me wrong I love classic cars but yeah not a daily driver unless you like driving really slow those older posches were basically bugs

The Petersen is in the business of old cars as they were. One day, they will need special permits to even drive them out the door as petrol vehicles get banned from cities. Converted electrics - way cool way to keep classic chassis on the road and having fun :)
