Your definition of “slightly” is different from mine. 9kW cont v 15kW continuous - my maths tells me the dual Tesla system delivers 66% more power than the Generac and 18kWh v 27kWh - I make that 50% more capacity. These are not “slight” differences. They’re significant. Yet your scores for both of them only reflect 25% more.

@Bowhunters I 🤔 and correct me if I’m wrong? The whole point of this exercise apart from back up power is to stop burning fossil fuels.
@charlesbyrneShowComments4all
@charlesbyrneShowComments4all 2 года назад
@@wobby1516 you also need to consider that rare earth minerals are mined for batteries and solar panels which affects the environment also the disposal of batteries after they can no longer charge then having to replace them. Also the transport of materials via fossil fuels, production of materials via fossil fuels. I really don't consider these least mentioned issues as going green. With that said I do believe we should all be stewards of the environment and do energy wise and environmentally friendly actions. Simple things like keeping tires inflated, setting thermostats higher/lower. Increasing insulation and radiant barrier in attic and walls. Replacing older windows with better insulated ones, replacing curtains with insulated curtains. Growing trees to shade parts of the home and produce oxygen, Water conservation, reduction of fertilizer on lawns and gardens, using biochar on your lawns and garden for soil health and a "carbon" sink, Composting yard wastes and food scraps. If every household would do just these few simple and cheaper things on a consistent basis it would benefit us all.

I don't have a lot of real estate on my roof in the right location for solar and I need to replace the old roof before I install what solar panels I can (about 400 sq. ft. of area). I may add a wind generator as well since it's breezy here a lot of the time. I figure this way I will have a lot of redundancy in the system. Is this doable? I found a local Generac installer and they got my system up and running in about 9 weeks from time of order to permission to operate. (I got Permission to Operate at beginning of October.) I do think the tesla software is alot better, (I haven't used it but have seen it) The generac software is not near as nice as I thought it was. The app looks cool but you can't actually do anything with it just monitor. If you want to change how your system operates say from a time of use in the summer where I use the battery to limit my power draw during peak hours to back up only for winter you have to go to the inverter panel and use the buttons to scroll through the menu's on the little screen to change that.

Tesla can participate in microgrid designs where multiple installations in the same neighborhood can join to create a single logical virtual power plant. For those kinds of setups there is typically a need for greater than the 27 kwhr you used in this example, which Tesla can do. How is the Generac system in this context? GENERAC Intelligent management was not included with my installation, just critical loads. I think that your comparing It's not fair because you are using two Teslas Batteries VS only one Generac PWRCell. To be fair you should compare one Tesla Battery VS one Generac PWR Cell. I will love to hear your response.

Would have went with the Tesla, but not even close to available in my area (Des Moines, IA) any time soon as I understand. Unfortunately, a pretty big negative

You might want to approach a licensed electrician and ask them to approach TESLA. This could speed up Tesla's approach to finding licensed electricians.

Seems like there is no reason to look at Generac. A few grand saved yet a third of the power. Secondly, load management doesn't save or earn you money. The power wall can operate with autobidder which can indeed save or even make you money in markets that are compatible with its tech. Technically, the power wall could boost your solar savings. Let's say your roof only accommodates a small solar array, one that doesn't come close to the energy you actually need, by allowing the battery to power your AC during peak times (say from 1pm to 8pm), that would make a huge impact on your monthly bill.

OK, Cost with the two Tesla Powerwall (17KW system) your Price is $51,167 "I assume that is total cost". Assuming the batters last 10 years (warranty period) which is 120 months, Your monthly cost is ($51,167 / 120 = $426 per month). If the system last 20 years then the cost is still $213 per month. And this is still only giving you maybe 3 days of power with New Batteries. Average household energy use is 890KWH @ $0.2472 per KWH = $220 per month, therefore if I install a solar system then I just doubled my energy cost. So if the grid energy cost goes to $0.50 per KWH then I would be break even at cost. And if this happen then the cost of the solar system would most likely increase also. Sounds like the same logic for the electric cars, that is why gas has doubled in price. For the electric cars to be feasible a gallon of gas must be over $3.78 per gallon. GOOD LUCK.

PowerWall+ is DC coupled. DC power charges the battery without being converted to AC. When the battery discharges, the inverter (rated at 7.6) converters the power to AC. There’s only 1 50 amp breaker in the Gateway2 for the PowerWall+. A PowerWall uses a 30amp breaker and an 7.6 Tesla inverter uses a 40amp breaker. PowerWall+ is easier to install over PowerWall and inverter. Also, once the Tesla Backup switch gets approved by the Utilities, Game Over! PowerWall+ will be installed quicker, with less parts, and without a licensed Electrician! (No back up load center require or relocating loads from the Main Panel to BLC) Ohh, and PowerWall+ do not need Utility approval to operate. It is configured not to backfeed to the Utility until PTO is received. So the system is installed and left ON, same day!

I signed up for powerwalls October 2020, waited until March 2021, then I changed the location of the batteries to Mount next to my new generator disconnect that was installed after I signed up, making it 50’ closer for them. It went back to design, got it installed June 2021. Thankfully I was grandfathered in to get them installed despite not buying their solar, I already had 8.4 kw solar from 2017. I love my powerwalls, probably wouldn’t have gotten a whole house generator if they would have installed the powerwalls in 2020. Now, if the sun shines, My generator will last forever since it now only runs 10 minutes each week. I hope Tesla changes their policy and let’s us add batteries down the road.

@harrkev
@harrkev 2 года назад
My answer: neither. Lithium Ion tech is GREAT for portable stuff: very high energy density for the size and weight. But for a house, you don't really have to care about those factors. If I could get something twice as large, twice as heavy, and half the price, THAT would be the perfect system. For something that sits stationary on the side of your house or in your garage, size and weight don't really matter much. Sodium ion batteries (when they become widely available) might just be perfect.

@Solar Surge >>>>> Compare with proper balance. Either compare with the same amount of battery storage or same price wise. You add an extra powerwall ... and what do you know, it a better buy. But... you add an extra powercell cabinet ...and what do you know, that's a better buy! >>>> Whoever has the most storage to achieve full house back-up is more-likely to always win. Price -wise is the best way to decide. SS might be a little bias just simply adding an extra powerwall to give Telsa the win. Oh well, good try.

Added an extra battery for Telsa and continuously repeating how Generac falls short to the Telsa. Wow!!! Really balanced, huh? Solar S. said," All things being equal..." Equal??? But you added the extra battery??? >>>>> Powerwall = 7.6 kw/9.0kw peak and Powercell 9.0kw/11.0kw peak ... but state that Generac is behind here. How? Can you explain? (Is it because you have included the "wonderful extra" powerwall?) Confusing. Maybe its because you sounded like a cop confusing everyone intentionally? Maybe? In my opinion, i dont need 2 Tesla power wall because its so expensive. Just buy 1 and use 2nd power wall money to buy more solar panels, and then i can get more power to send to grid so i can sell it to power company to save more money. Some state they buy back power 100% from us whom have solar systems in 1st year and then 80% 60% 40% following years after that.

Actually, it probably won’t last longer. These batteries could last 20 yrs. with zero maintenance. No need to worry about fuel, oil, spark plugs, or maintenance. Sure it’s more expensive, but it’s worth it for many to not have to worry about the noise or pollution. The battery response times are so fast that you would not even know the power went out.
