Tesla Service Update #5: No Loaners, Just Uber

I had to take the Model S in for service again and, in the process, I learned that Tesla is now issuing Uber credits instead of providing loaner cars for most service appointments... unless you want to spend ~$100/day for a Model S from Enterprise.

I could see Uber credits working more generally for the Model 3 crowd, but at this point in time, I feel as though the majority of Model S owners may not be so keen. At least not around where I live.

EU customer here. - No Uber credits AND no free loaners. I did get a free loaner earlier this year because they had made a mistake and that car was a total dumpster with a gazillion miles on the odometer. - For work that supposedly takes less than a day, they ask you to stay in the service center. They have free wifi, coffee and still and sparkling water. This actually works for me as a freelance translator because the only work tools I need are a laptop and internet. - I have to say I have never had an issue that took longer than half a day to fix - And longer-than-expected SeC stops are rare here because they very carefully plan their workshop occupation, so no unexpected delays occur. The downside of this is that when you make an appointment, the first spot in their schedule is usually 2 months away. When it's really urgent, they send out a Ranger.

I drove 2 hours to my closest service center for my Model 3 HW3 install and was told they no longer give out loaners. This really sucks! Now I have to pay for a rental car (and gas), to get home and another one to come back tomorrow. They said there is a chance the install could be completed today and I’m sticking around for that. Wish Tesla would stop making new car models and focus on fixing customer service. And they need to have bring back phone support for service. Customers want to talk to a person!

They wouldn't even give you Uber credits?

Alex Venz they only offered me an Uber voucher for today if I wanted to go get something to eat, while I wait here. I’m definitely rethinking any future Tesla purchase!

Guess I'm spoiled by lexus service department. Been driving lexus for the last 20 years and always get a new lexus loaner for over night service. Not once was I given anything other than a new lexus loaner. Just bought my first model 3 a week ago and I'm already in the service department for 8 paint bubble chip all over the model 3. Very disappointed with tesla delivery quality. Trying to support Elon Musk but sort of missing lexus service and quality already. We also have the cybertruck on pre-order. But now thinking hard about our future with tesla.

It's cool for new customers but if your account is old enough that they had loaners when you first became an owner they should do the right thing
@AlexVenz

You got stuck with Uber credits and no car for two weeks? That's pretty ridiculous.

@@AlexVenz yep can't stand the service centers since the Model 3 volume picked up. Mobile is still the best I've ever experienced. I bought a used Model S and was treated like a king! Sold it and bought a brand new fully loaded Model X P100D the only way to spend more was 22 inch wheels (I bought painted 20s for towing) and the 6 seat option (we picked 7 seats for the fold flat floor) and at first got treated like we expected when we initially bought in (not like royalty but with respect and care) then Model 3 hit volume now we're treated like we stole the car from them and got a refund on top of that. (except mobile, they're still the very best I've ever had) this is with several different facilities in the Southeast US

They did give us an Enterprise rental when I explained we can't take Uber to other states (9 hour trip). I love 🙄 the walk in to work a mile from the front gate to the front door since Uber isn't allowed on premises, then back again at night, thankfully it wasn't raining or cold any of these days and twice coworkers gave me a lift to the gates. This would be acceptable if the cars were part of the Tesla network (human pilots or autonomous)

Wow, That's not good news. There is no Uber service where I live in rural Ontario, Canada. Also my service station is 180Km away from my house, so I don't know what I would do if they can't fix my X in 1 day. That sounds like a terrible change and one that will anger a lot of Tesla owners in my neck of the woods. I also have problems with water in my rear lights after rain, but the service team said they will not do anything about it unless the water remains there for 24 hrs after. Has anyone else been told this?
@AlexVenz
@AlexVenz 4 года назад
Given your circumstances, I'd imagine the service reps would do what they had to to get you a loaner--there seems to be some flexibility. Haven't heard that about water in the tail lights, though...

Now I'm curious whether Chevy offers plug-in loaners. When I took my 2012 Volt in for servicing, they gave me a Malibu. Burned more gas in a week than my Volt burned in a month. 'Murican muscle.

Damn...in a few hours I'm about to drop off our X100D for a computer hardware upgrade, a rear lower bumper replacement, and a few other things. I've received no warning from Tesla about getting sent away with "Uber credits" - perish the thought - but I'll be very disappointed if I discover that our local San Diego - Miramar service centre has gone the Uber-way too.

Honestly not a fan of the shift towards Uber credits but I've never had a service go longer than a day where I would need to rely on the program so I don't think I get a say in this.

I know they had offered uber credits 3 months back. I had called for a loaner before visiting and when I got there they offered the uber credit but I said no thanks , but I called for a loaner previously and was approved. Thats how I got a loaner

It's a crying shame what has happened to Tesla service. It used to be brilliant, for me it has become non-existent. I'll never buy another Tesla. Tesla wouldn't even look at my car that failed well within the 4 year warranty. Things have gone so bad. The cars are great, the service is not (I was going to use an expletive but thought better of it). I would caution anyone considering buying a Tesla that unless they are convinced the car will have zero problems best not buy even though the cars are very good and continue to get better. As far as I'm concerned no service means no sale (and they still have my $1500 AUD Model 3 place holder fee). It's not like a Ford, you have to deal with Tesla, you can't take your car to any other place to get it worked on when it fails.

Tesla has moved quite a way from when Elon said that all loaners would be top of the line P100Ds - and that is a shame. Any reason for having to leave your car at the service center is usually not a good one, so any way to assuage the pain of it is well received (and remembered and boasted to non-owners by us owners)

It’s funny. My center display also had that issue and I took my car in last week. The texting was good. They originally were sending a ranger then said. No come in to the service center. And no loaner. Here is another tip. I used Uber to get home and then just used my wife’s car. So I did not use my Uber the next day and then the voucher expires if you don’t use it. So to use my Uber on the way to pick up my car. - day early. It didn’t work. So I had to text and text and eventually they gave me a new voucher. They also will reimburse your $55/day in a rental. You have to pay and they reimburse you. Not sure how that works. I wasn’t happy with the Uber situation. The day I dropped off my car I drive my wife’s car 140 miles. For work. I too do not have a typical job. Sometimes I work at home. Other days I drive(that’s why I love my Tesla). Anyway it all worked out and it seems like the new console display is crisper looking. What do you think?

Tesla is going to discourage sales to anyone that does not live in a large urban area served by Uber. What is going to happen to these troublesome cars once they are out of warranty? Who would want to own them? I believe that their resale values will really take a hit.
@AlexVenz

Yeah, that's pretty much my concern with service changes like this. I mean, I do plan on keeping my Model S for a while but it would be somewhat crazy to do so in my case without the extended warranty--one failed MCU + any other failure pays for the warranty (and that MCU absolutely will fail within the next 4 years). On the bright side, the Model 3 has been great. 👍

Alex Venz So far the Model 3’s have been more reliable, but they haven’t been around for as long. I certainly have my fingers crossed as we really love our Model 3 and want nothing but the best for Tesla and the electric revolution!

Not that I'm aware of... The Uber app just shows the usual UberX, Comfort, Pool, UberXL, Black, Black SUV, Lux, Español, Select, Assist, and WAV (wheelchair accessible) options here.
