Tesle Model Y & Model 3 - Fixing Flat Tire w/Nail - Patching a Tire

Owning a Tesla Model Y, or a Tesla Model 3 is an enjoyable experience. Various reviews, including ones from myself will show you just how great EV ownership can be in a Tesla. While the Model Y and the Model 3 are so much alike, they are also similar in that they both have expensive tires.
We have all been there, a nail in the tire. Depending on your area, some places have all but stopped patching tires these days, and many other shops strongly suggest you replace, rather than patch, a tire. The tires on the Model Y and the Model 3 are very expensive. And because most Teslas come with an all wheel drive (AWD) system, if you replace 1 tire, you will need to replace the 2nd tire on that same axle. This doubles the cost, and for what can be fixed quite easily on your own.
Although I would also argue getting a new tire is always safer, if you want to use a patch for an emergency to get to the tire shop, I have found a reasonably inexpensive tire patch kit that has everything you need to do this easy repair on your own. The nice thing about this kit is its compact and can be taken with you everywhere without taking up much space. That way you always have it and since the Model Y and Model 3 do not come with a spare tire, this may be a good idea to bring along with you on road trips.
I ended up having a nail in the tire of our Tesla Model 3 right before a major road trip. I had already purchased this tire patch kit, so I was already prepared to get this fixed all on my own. It turned out that my Model Y also had a nail in one of its tires too. So because I have this little patch kit, I was able to get both tires patched in about 10 minutes total.
Patching a tire can be an easy thing to do and most people will be able to do it themselves. Like with all maintenance on a Tesla Model Y or Model 3, if you are not comfortable with this, you should probably seek a professional. Do know that most professionals will suggest you replace tires rather than patch though.

Can that also be done on run flats? Nobody wants to fix them even if the nail is in the gaps like this video, so basically run flats are disposable tires, and very expensive too.

@@jcj68 I don't think run flat tires can be plugged but I'm not 100% sure but they can be patched which is more complicated and requires removing the tire from the wheel.

Well said. I've been doing it for around 30 years myself. If you do a good job with a good kit like BT, the plug will outlast the tire! I've even done it on high speed rated tires. Believe it or not, even at high speed, wheels don't rotate that fast.

Your video was helpful. I have a 22 MYP. Had a roofing nail stuck very close to the sidewall. I know if I took that they would make me change the whole tire. Try it out the tire plug kit but it was pretty difficult had to do some finessing with a drill and a drill bit and then I was able to get the reamer in there. Then it was okay after that but it did require a lot of muscle and I don't really have that much muscle. But it did work. Now I'm going to see how long it lasts. Thanks for your video. Berri No-ICE.

My wife and I are going down to Orlando in my MYLR for her surgery and we’ll be there for a few weeks, so we’re looking forward to an enjoyable but uneventful road trip with no punctures, and of course, successful surgery, but we’ll get a kit just in case. There will be some people who come by and say this is not safe. They will say you should always use a patch where the tire shop dismounts your tire, cleans it up with a wire wheel on the inside then rubber cements a patch from the inside for ~$30. I personally plug tires just I have have always done over more than 30 tires in my lifetime for sure, and contrary to many peoples belief, I have never had one come out or fail. Also, There is absolutely no reason to replace a tire unless the puncture is in the sidewall. If you have been scared from plugging tires from other people opinion or if you are not capable of pulling off a plug job, just go to the tire place and dole out your $30. Do not spend $300 on a new tire unless they are almost worn out already.

Helpful yes, but incomplete. I would recommend a portable and reliable air compressor. Having a plug kit is better than waiting on the side of the road for help. It will last long enough until you need to replace all the tires. On a side note, I would recommend a jack kit from Modern spare along with a jack pad in case you get a nail in the rear tires since you would need to remove the rear tires to put in a plug.

Thanks! Great video. After owning my MY for less than a month I have a nail in the tire. Telsa states that the nail is in a non repairable spot. They are full of it! I refuse to spend $425 to replace a brand new tire (only 1025 miles on the car). I’m ordering the kit immediately. I’m a DYI person.

Family member just went thru this at work. Car warned her of a 21PSI tire. By the time she got outside it was down to 18. Roadside came out and swapped her with a loaner tire. Put hers in the trunk. Came out the next morning and it was too far to the side wall so they ended up with a $420 replacement. Nice to see that scenario worked out in a reasonable time vs a flatbed tow. Out in the woods I definitely carry one of these plus a corded/cordless air compressor. This is actually one of those reasons I don’t want to tow a utility trailer when I make dump runs with my Y haha.

Been plugging tires for years and probably in the last 15 years or so when I've had a flat the tire centers always prefer to remove the tire from the rim and use a patch from the inside. Usually around $20-25.

I have to say I do recommend doing this if you don’t have another choice 😛 after you do that, you will have to buy a new tire… at least that’s what the guys at the tire shop told me. They say they can patch it for free if I ever need it, but using that method will ruin the tire thread and a patch won’t work.

I wouldn’t really recommend someone having Tesla patch a tire. I was scheduled for a tire rotation when I noticed a nail in one of my tires. I asked them to patch it, which they did, but it cost $125 just to patch it (+$65 for the rotation). Just DYI it or go somewhere like Firestone that will do it just as well for cheap.

@@BeardedTeslaGuy I beg to differ, based on your video the nail was not leaking air, so you would be fine to continue driving until you find a tire shop to handle it properly. I have had people do what you are doing, then lose air and have to drive until they find a place to add air. I have experienced this both ways, and found leaving it in, not screwing with it, has yielded better results especially when the nail's diameter is so small.
