I think this is a great lesson. I would like to try it out with my students. Where can I get a copy of the worksheet with laws/name of country/ regulations that the teacher uses in this video?
In all honesty, I normally hate esl activities because I find them too immature; however, I loved this one. It works perfectly for adults and you can work with many topics at the same time. I'm going to use for a review. Thank you and congratulations!
Congrats! That was a great TBL lesson demo; the pre-task and the task cycle were pretty clear. However, I would like you to show us how to properly give feedback to students. How do you point the mistakes they commited during the task?
Hi Camilo, thanks for watching our video! One of our preferred methods for correcting mistakes is to make a note of all the mistakes you observed and then go over them with the entire class once the activity is over. Give them the chance to make the correction (as a group) before you do it yourself. This allows them to think critically about their mistakes without singling out any one student.
Hello Uncle5cary, this is a great activity for more advanced students. I could see how beginner and intermediate students might find this too difficult.
You obviously don't teach EFL. This is absolutely a TBL activity. The biggest difference in a task and an exercise is that the outcome is not supposed to be language-based in a task-based lesson, where in an exercise, it is. And the lesson could also be vocabulary-based, there doesn't always need to be a grammar focus, or it can be skills-based. The production is what is important in a TBL activity. She did quite well.
That was interesting, but we did not see how you give the students corrections. I think that would be valuable to show. I would like to see the approach that you take to accomplish that.
This just seems like more teacher controlling and manipulating, students rather than students learning. Let students read, listen, and when they feel like it, talk on subjects of interest. TPL treats adults like children and creates artificial communication scenarios dreamed up a teacher. I would not attend such a class.
@yunita311 This video was filmed at our school in Denver, Colorado. It was made about 2 years ago now. Unfortunately, we don't know exactly how many students were in the class. Good luck with your project!
@makinawdandy6699 We do have videos for error correction techniques as part of our library of videos. To see a list of topics we offer, check out TEFLVideos online!
Hello Ursula, Apologies for the delayed response! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Unfortunately, we do not have the worksheets that go along with the video, but if you are looking for some teaching resources and more tips, follow us on Facebook or check out our BridgeTEFL blog: bridge.edu/tefl/blog :)
Can you share the resources used in this video? The worksheets? I might use this activity with my students in online learning due to this pandemic occurring right now
This is good, but You'd warn students about "false cognates" like in 2:55's "Principal", a word that means "main" for Spanish speakers. We need to be corrected. And try to be openminded: 6:21 Student: No govenrment, (just) some leaders. Teacher: Oh my! ... And people are ok with this? Most of us in Americas are used to find a way out for ourselves, so we'd be ok with anarchy (as in people being aware enough about everything that behavior-imposing institutions wouldn't be needed)
@lackadaddyz THIS IS NOT A TBL CLASS WHERE THE MAIN AIM IS TO HAVE STUDENTS "DISCOVER" THROUGH COMMUNICATIVE ACTIVITIES. HERE, IT SEEMS TO ME THAT HER MAIN AIM IS TO HAVE THEM SPEAKING, WHICH IS FULFILLED, BUT WHAT DID THEY "NOTICE" SHE GAVE THEM EXAMPLES OF WHAT THEY WERE SUPPOSE TO PRODUCE. NOT A TBL CLASS.
this is good method i think. thank you for inspired me.. may i used your method in my class? n may i ask the question that you give to student?? i still confuse what kind of question that must given to student.. thank you before.. this a great video. thank you
In a natural learning environment (play) the parent would verbalise what the child is doing, "now you are drawing a house" etc etc. Perhaps you could adapt this by introducing basic play tasks and getting the children to repeat
That was a great activiy. Can you tell me the main aim, Subsidiary aim and the target language that you use for that activity?? Please I need that info for my project. Thanks
This looks like and excellent activity. It's simple and it engages the intellect and requires a bit of creativity. I teach EFL to university students, and I think this activity would be a great fit for my students. Thanks!
Wow! I really liked this idea for a variety of reasons - novelty, creativity, vocabulary. When I was thinking of developing my own task-based activity, I was stuck in "reality mode." Her idea of a murder mystery is a clever one as well.
I really love your idea! The lesson is great! The task you set is a well-chosen one and very learner-centered. All skills are integrated in the lesson and the Ss use the lg productively and receptively, in an unrehearsed context. Is the handout which you gave them available somewhere on the web? Cheers
