I think that he thought that he would get a laugh with the "hood" comment. When it didn't come, and she just simply answered the question is what made it "cringe". He also came at her dress for looking like it came from a costume store, but that wasn't racial, it was just kind of disrespectful being that she just told him that it came from a designer, but I think that was just poor timing on a joke that kind of failed.
