Test: Can You Visualize This In Your Mind? APHANTASIA Explained

Aphantasia is a phenomenon in which people are unable to visualize imagery. While most people are able to conjure an image of a scene or face in their minds, people with aphantasia cannot.
Aphantasia is believed to be rare, affecting an estimated 1% to 3% of the population. If you were to ask a person with aphantasia to imagine something, they could likely describe the object, explain the concept, and rattle off facts that they know about the object. But they would not be able to experience any mental image accompanying this knowledge.
The inability to voluntarily form mental images was first described in medical literature by Francis Galton in 1880. People with this condition experience difficulty picturing scenes or objects in their minds, a phenomenon known as mind-blindness.
Aphantasia is rare, but scientists have identified two types of the disorder, including acquired aphantasia, which can occur after a brain injury or occasionally after periods of depression or psychosis, and congenital aphantasia, which is present at birth.
Research on the condition is still scarce. Hyperphantasia, the condition of having extremely vivid mental imagery, is the opposite of aphantasia.

How do you problem solve things? Just trial and error until you get it? And I don't mean this is a bad way or w.e. what I'm trying to say is like when people see something visually wrong with something they can imagine idk say taking apart parts on a car and putting them back without actually doing it physically to figure out where things need to go.. vs idk just doing it lol.. idk do I sound nuts idk how this works forgive me 😂 😭 💀

@@ugsskywatchermckenzie4319 I don’t think in pictures or words. Things just make sense to me, as poorly as that’s worded. Like, let’s take the words pharmacist and qualification. I know attributes about a these words and how they relate to each other, and I have these in the back of my head, but not consciously. Then, if it’s used in a sentence like, “Im a pharmacist, but I’m going back for my phd”, I might start to wonder what sort of qualifications they might be seeking, and from the concepts that come to mind there, I think more recursively. It’s almost like combinatorics. It sounds super complicated, but I’m not aware of most of it and a lot of the time, I have a hard time finding the words to use the thoughts collaboratively.

@maisonfitnesss yes, that's how it is for me. I see nothing, not the shape of the shirt, not the color, nothing. However I know what a red shirt could look like but only in the form of a description or concept as if I'm reading about it in a book. A lot of it is intuitive. For normal people it seems your brain conjures images and allows you to experience them and interpret them. For me it's like my brain is seeing the images and interpreting them for me and then allowing me to only access a very general conceptualization of the traits of the scene without seeing it. It's this feeling of just knowing. It's different for some but I can actually recognize peoples faces even if I haven't seen them for many years but I can't visualize their face in my mind at all. Can't even see my wife's or kids faces. This tells me my brain has got to have images stored and can easily recall them but it doesn't allow me to share in the process. It's very odd and I'm still trying to accept that I have this mental blindness while the majority of other people don't. I am extremely envious of people who can actually see things.

Maybe not noone sees things in their head (unless hallucinating) but people can visualise/imagine the colour, shape and texture of an image they want to create. Example a purple, polished apple you can imagine how it looks and feels. It's similar to an internal monologue where the person doesn't actually hear an audible voice (schizophrenia) they imagine a voice (usually their own) and use that to have a discussion with themselves. You'll know you have one if you've ever had a discussion or argument with someone and hours later all of a sudden think about what you should've said in a specific moment especially when you are in the shower or doing something alike where your brain can just take you to that place and isnt blocked by you physically doing something.

I'm not denying that aphetasia is real, but hypothetically speaking what if this is a semantic issue? When we say we "see" images in our mind that doesn't mean that we imagine it as looking as solid as when we see with our eyes. But what if people with aphetasia just think we mean that we can see super vivid and solid objects in our mind because they misunderstood what we mean by imagining things?
@YourIQDoesntMeanShitToMe
@YourIQDoesntMeanShitToMe Год назад
Actually good question, that I've been pondering about as well. To be perfectly honest, you made me realize just now that the reason I'm searching for information about aphantasia, is exactly because of this question. Underrated comment, I hope more people will see you here and hopefully give us a comprehensive answer.
@Naa-cn9tt
@Naa-cn9tt 11 месяцев назад
There are many differences within diagnosed of aphantasia. Some aphantasia people can picture things in their mind but they are very blurry and it is very difficult to them to really "imagine" things. Some litterally "see" NOTHING. They picture things as a contept. They can't imagine someone face when they close their eyes, but they remember. Aphantasia is not a serious disability. They can function like normal people and still have imagination and creativity. They just think and process it differently
@rileysmall4317
@rileysmall4317 8 месяцев назад
There's definitely many people who think they cant visualise who actually can for the reasons you've raised. Same as an internal monologue you don't hear an audible voice (schizophrenia) you imagine what an audible voice would sound like (usually your own) and use that to discuss or narrate to yourself.

Its a spectrum. My wife can imagine herself on a beach and see, hear, feel, taste and smell exactly as if she were actually on the beach. Sounds like you have a degree of aphantasia. I can't do any of that. The only thing I can imagine is spacial locations....ie if I'm looking at a chair and I close my eyes I remember the location of the chair, but nothing else. While it sounds like an incredible superpower to be able to sensory think and experience memories I realize it's all their in my head as well, else I'd be shocked everytime I see anything, I just can't retrieve any of it. Third eye blind.

I keep thinking this but then when I hear people who say they can visualise talk about visualising, I can't even begin to critique it because I don't understand what they're talking about at all. Yet if someone asks me to imagine the sound of a car horn then that makes complete sense. It's not an actual sound but I can easily imagine a horn and try to replicate the sound imagining.

This is the same thing I am thinking about rn. If I want to visualize something, I percieve it, but I don't really see an actual image, but I just know how it looks like at that moment. I can imagine some kind of scene and describe aswell as change things about it dynamically, but I don't see it as a visible image in my head, I just know it, where everything is and what it looks like. You can’t remember something from a place you have never been. I give you an example. I had many dreams in landscapes I never went to, or even saw pictures off. I dreamed e one day I was on top of a shark that wasn’t real, was a drawn shark, and the shark took me to the top of a huge tsunami, and I was able to swim on that tsunami wave (that was ginormous) and see fish, rays, and other sea creatures that were all drawn, they had a crayon texture. On the tsunami I was able to see a city that was also drawn, had very warm colours painted on the houses (like red and orange) and we were going straight to that city. I teleported to a house where there is an old lady I had never seen in my life talking to me like she was from my family. The point is, the same way you can have crazy dreams about people and things you had never seen in that specific form in real life, your brain is able to create images that don’t exist. I can imagine literally anything. I can mix and Mach stuff that already exist to create something of my own. My goal is to perfect my drawing to the point of being able to draw my dreams. Take studio Ghibli for example, all of their animations are based on dreams. I have never seen a bus that is actually a Cat flying around 😅

Either way, I do see pictures in my head, I hear in my head, I taste, and I smell vaguely distinct things. For example, when reading a book, I can hear a made up voice of the characters, see them in action and feel the environment, with my eyes wide open. Comparing the brains between people without an ability to visualize or use an internal monologue with people in the average vivid imagery range is fascinating. It is probably the best candidate to figuring out how different conscious experience emerge in the brain. Like are the abstract ways people that can’t see images in there head describing when they think about where things are in there house as strong a conscious experience as what a visualizer is having. Or is it just different but because it does not align with there sensory perception. So are many of these people slightly less conscious than people in the normal range or is it just a different experience. And are the people that are vivid imagers on the opposite side of the spectrum really having a stronger conscious experience than most people that would be at there same level of intelligence. So for example are non visualizers having less of a conscious experience than a visualizer when they can correctly answer a question on a mental rotation test. Is the brain still able to do the rotation but just outside of the experience that the person is having. Likewise when someone can read 150 books a year, but they do not have an internal monologue, is the abstract way they visually break up and interpret the sentences much faster just a different form of self awareness manifesting itself. Or is much of that work of processing the information the brain is doing subconscious. There have been studies comparing brain regions and how different parts of the brain activate. And for example vivid imagerers that can see things in there head to the quality they see with there eyes open tend to have much stronger activity between there pre frontal cortex and there visual processing centers. Does this mean we could just plug a couple neural-link wires from the cortext back to another port near the visual center part of the brain and make everyone be capable of interpret the world in there minds eye with super clear visual clarity. It would interesting to see (no pun intended) if there are differences between the brains of these different groups at the cellular level too and not just the overall structure. Like this could help prove if quantum fluctuations in microtubials effect self awareness or if that or other theories are bunk science.

As someone with aphantasia I'm tired of people saying it's not a disability. Just because one people makes that statement doesn't make it true. Sure we can blend in and compete, but it's awful. As my wife said when I first discovered this, I sure hope you're kidding because that sounds miserable. It's like we are not completely alive.

I only see darkness and of course i can recall things or imagine new ones, but i won't *see* them like i see things in real life. I don't think this is aphantasia, it has never disturbed me whatsoever, i'm just wondering if i should actually see things as if i was hallucinating or something

Do not anyone I mean think there is something wrong with you there isn't even tho whoever can imagine whatever when you eventually witness the self you see yourself as a body but you are looking at your body but you are not with the body you are the eye's watching then you become aware of the watcher there is nothing you are consciousness no feeling nothing just aware of the eyes watching it's like someone putting there hands on your shoulder saying you are home I did not visualise it was a very deep experience I had

I’m probably not making any sense but to me I can image it, albeit it it’s hard.

The thing is what some people don’t understand is that we visualise with our eyes open! We can still look at the world around us but have “picture thoughts” running through your mind, or any senario like a movie. You don’t so much see it on a screen or anything, it’s hard explain, it’s like you’re just in that moment. So when you close your eyes you see darkness but you just “see” images. It’s so hard to explain really. It’s just there and you can put yourself in any place you’ve ever been. It’s dream like. I never ever know until this week that people didn’t experience this.
