Classic Car Addict is excited to present this family owned 1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Super Sport with 13k actual miles for sale in our Mesa, AZ showroom. General Motors started to offer the Chevrolet form of personal luxury segment transportation with the original Monte Carlo. It became successful enough for the Detroit automaker to churn out no less than six generations. Among them, its fourth iteration is well known among racing and aftermarket aficionados.
This was the last year for the third-generation Monte Carlo. The 1988 models were built from September to December 1987; with only 16,204 SSs made with an asking price of $14,320. Appearance and mechanicals were similar to the 1987 model - the LS still had the 4.3L V6 as standard with the carbureted 5.0L V8 as optional. The SS model still came with the 180HP carbureted 305 V8. In 1988 the SS only came with the laydown style spoiler, unlike the 87 model, which can have with either the laydown or stand-up spoiler. The aero coupe did not return as Chevrolet had unveiled plans to produce an upcoming Lumina and race that in NASCAR. Total production numbers for the final year of the RWD Monte Carlo was 30,174 - almost half of the 1987 numbers. The Monte Carlo would effectively be replaced by the Lumina coupe in 1990.
Finished in its original 12U black paint with gold pinstripes, this 1988 SS looks like new. Its purposeful boxy stance is as distinctive today as it was back in the 1980’s, and those dished wheels are a perfect period feature of this performance car. This Monte rolls on BF Goodrich radial T/A’s 215/65R/15 tires with 9 32nds all around.
If you think the exterior looks impressive, you should look inside. Its tan cabin is a real blast from the past, with the ‘time machine’ effect made real by its immaculate condition. It features saddle bucket seats in excellent condition. This well-appointed space is full of plush materials, but also many sporting features such as a two-spoke steering wheel and red-trimmed instrument cluster. Luxuries such as power steering, power brakes, speed control, sport mirrors, power trunk, rear window defogger, tilt steering, lighted passenger side visor mirror, auxiliary lighting, AC, power windows and locks, AM/FM/cassette, and digital clock.
The 305ci V8 fires right up and idles nicely with 180HP. It’s four-speed 200R4 automatic transmission makes this a great cruise. By 1988, the Monte Carlos had switched from regular carburetors to computer controlled and it makes a noticeable difference! These cars aren't high-horsepower race cars from the factory, but the 305 has plenty of pep and this car is truly a blast to drive!
