I think this was one of the best convenient ways to test multiple wicks that I've seen. It really does save wax when you have to test which wick is best for a particular wax. Great way of doing it Jeff You have great ideas
Very thankful for all those who share their knowledge on RU-vid. Because of you many across the world gets to learn better, even in places where there is not much guidance or raw materials available.
I’m all new to candles making and I already feel like pulling my hair and feel like giving up on this cause I didn’t know that it was going to this hard but thank you Jeff your videos have been help me a lot I love this wick testing video it’s way easier
I am just about to place my first order over here in the UK and the wick testing I was concerned about but you have shown a great technique so thank you very much
Order placed and with your last video I now can go forward, biggest problem I have found is that the wholesalers do mot make it easy to fathom out wicks verus jars but after watching your videos and finding this wholesalers I am now pretty happy, will post what I make - thank you @@StandleyHandcrafted
Thank you. This is really helpful for me. I am thinking of starting a candle making business and I'm still learning everything I need to know before spending money on supplies and this is so helpful my goodness. God bless you ❤️
Omg! I am new to candle making. I just ran across this video. And, let me tell you, this video is everything! A total game changer. Thank you so, so much for sharing this method of testing wicks. You are an absolute genius! 🙏🏾
Thank you for the information!! I do have a suggestion for the next video, would you be able to test wick sizes in candle tins? I know a few people as well as myself work with those 8oz tins and the IGI 6006. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks again!
This idea is ingenious, I can't believe no one else has figured this out! Could I ask how you would fix tunnelling when testing a wick that is unsuitable though, a blast with heat gun maybe? I thought that the HTP73 would have shown signs of tunnelling once cooled and then no other wick would be able to melt past the original tunnelled melt pool?
Would it be fair to say, that one could get an idea on how the wax looks in its jar once it's set up in using your test wicking process here? Eg, sink holes, rough tops, frosting? Just curious and always looking for ways to be more frugal and find ways to consolidate! Also, I'm thinking of trying your method after I've cured a candle with fo and dye to test hot throw. I wonder how well it will work. 🤔
Hi Jeff, I'm wondering how to stick more than one label on my candle jar. I need to add a safety label and I also wanted to add a label showing the fragrance ingredients. Any idea how to do a fold out label for my candles? Thanks! P.s you're great!
When doing this wickless testing, should I be adding fragrance in or is this just simply to figure out which wick is best. Then later once I find the best wick, I can move on to testing that wick and jar with fragrance?
I would do this with just plain wax to find the best wick. Then do it with dye if you're using any. Then try it with fragrance and dye if you're using. This way if anything goes wrong you can figure out what happens. It worked perfectly with the dye but as soon as you added a certain fragrance it had issues. If that happens you can focus on the fragrance. Maybe lower the percentage, find a new wick, etc.
Hi Standley! Penny here from sunny Miami!😂😂 Is the process the same for testing with Wooden Wicks? How’s the weather in your neck of the woods? Sorry had to ask!! Thanks again! Great info you’re sharing.... I’m so new at this.... I love your videos🕯
Hi Standley! I just received my candle kit today!!! I’ll see how they turn out tomorrow..... I’m excited!!! I hope with all your video lessons I learned something and they turn out well🕯
Hi Jeff, I just joined the FB group for candle tips. I did have some questions though. So I ordered the sample wick set from lone star. Do you suggest I use my wicks through them. All of their wicks are pre cut to 6 inches and dipped in wax as to my 1st order of wicks came from Candlewic in a roll not dipped in wax. Is there a preference that will effect my burn? I know with a roll I can make my own lengths, just they are not dipped in wax. Thank you so much for all the questions you’ve answered and helped me with! Thanks Jeff!
Thank you for the tips... Can you help on how to get proper scents and throw.. meaning when you melt and mix before you pour... on both size jelly jars.. thank you.. JusBuTTer
Now when I do this, do we put in FO? And would wood wicks work for this or do we need to put them in a separate jar? And how hard does the wax need to be to start another round of testing?
question. Once you find the proper wick ratio you need do you re-melt the wax and then add the proper wick with tab or just make a new candle with the proper wick?
@@StandleyHandcrafted When you melt a candle to change out the wick, wouldn't you burn off the fragrance? I'm assuming the candle would be melted over a double broiler.
New to all of this...doing all kinds of research on wick testing & this is more streamline and efficient. I notice some people fill the vessel half way. Other than saving wax, doesn't that change the dynamics of the test? Help me with that logic please.
Jeff, I am new to candle making and I am wondering if there is any ASTM testing of the candles that has to take place in order to sell them. If you could please inform me with and answer or a good resource itwould be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, Bret.
@@StandleyHandcrafted Jeff, thank you for your response. Here is a little bit of information i have found. ASTM F-1972-99, Standard Guide for Terminology Relating to Candles and Associated Accessory Items ASTM F-2058-00, Standard Specification for Cautionary Labeling for Candles Burned in a Home ASTM F-2179-02, Standard Specification for Annealed Soda-Lime-Silicate Glass Containers that are Produced for Use as Candle Containers ASTM F-2326-04, Standard Test Method for Collection and Analysis of Visible Emissions from Candles as They Burn ASTM F-2179-04, Standard Specification for Fire Safety for Candles From www.cpsc.gov/Regulations-Laws--Standards/Voluntary-Standards/Topics/Candles Again thank you so much.
Hello! Thank you for sharing. Can anyone tell if he is pushing the wick all the way to the bottom? Or is he only pushing it down midway. It looks like midway to me, but I wanted to be sure before I test. Thank you.
I’m really really close to a melt pool, do you think I should add FO to see if it will do a totally full melt pool. Also how much FO should I use for a burn test with one candle
I've wasted alot testing this same jar. I'm using around 9% fragrance and like 3 drops of coloring per pound. I can not get the wick right. Any suggestions because ived tested several wicks and used up many jars when I see I didnt have to😒
Same! I cannot get a strong hot scent throw and I feel like it must be the wick since I used the max fragrance oil per pound of my IGI 4636 wax. It is so frustrating!
This has nothing to do with wicks BUT i wanted to know if you recommended or have used candle sciences EcoSoy Q210 & do u recommend? Ive been using golden wax 464 & struggle w imperfections and the scent throw isnt as strong 😔
Merci je suis française je débute et j’ai dépensé tellement que si j’étais tombé sur le roi de la bougie avant je serais plus riche et moins bête merci merci je crois que je vais en apprendre
Good Morning, I'm new and my confusion comes in as I was told that F/O plays a big part in wicking. If I test with out F/O will the wick I choose be sufficient for that jar?
I’m no expert but I believe you should always test with the same fragrance until you get the wick right for that jar. I wouldn’t test without Fragrance.
