I have bought 14k gold herringbone chain & magnet stuck to it fairly well but was marked so I tested with XRF guess what it was REAL SO DONT ALWAYS TRUST THAT THE MAGNET EFFECT IS ACCURATE TEST PS I TESTED LATER WITH ACID SAME RESULT 14K

Its funny watching you do it compared to how I do it. Your very professional safety gear and everything all lined up. I just dump it on the table, hit it with a magnetic, check for marks, scratch as many things as I can fit on the stones, acid and smoke everywhere, fingerprints gone, find the gold, then YAAAAAAAARRRRRRR!!!!! Oh, and I should add....My acid NEVER gets expired. I didnt even know that stuff expires. YAAAAAAARRRRR!!!!!!!

I think the 1st time with the funky chain it was a bit dirty and when you tested the second time you got a more accurate test. I think that you are good.

Silver can actually be magnetic. It depends what metal makes up the other 7.5% of the alloy, gold can also be magnetic for the same reason but they don't tend to use ferrous metals in modern pieces.

Real silver has magnetic flux. It's very cool to play with especially if you have a large bar and strong magnets.

The reason the second time showed more silver is because when you were scratching on the stone your index finger was whiping the top line off. At least thats how it looked from here.

Using silver acid testing (must be fresh): 100% silver will show as BRIGHT RED .. 925 (sterling silver) and 900 silver (coin silver /American silver) will show as Dark Red ... 800 silver (Italian & Geman silver) will show as brown red. 500 silver will show as (green red). This is the only truth about silver testing with silver acid

Silver acid is trash. Dark red and brown red are exactly the same color. No idea what green red is. Did you just make that up? Green and red make brown.... 18kt acid is the best way

I think 18k acid is in general a good test for silver but silver acid is best to test silver!

Yeah I do to it helps with knowing what purity the silver is more red the higher purity But still good you can use 18k acid if you run out 😌

wait my friend put the gel on the jewelry itself...she used a tool (it looked like a razor blade but i doubt it, applied the gel onto the jewelry

I'm wondering how good you have to wipe off your previous tests before testing on that same spot on the stone, because you were testing over an area that had just tested positive for silver with your questionable piece, you know? Maybe it was still reacting to the previous line that was positive for silver.

I've just started and have received 5 bags of jewelry so far. But I did get a testing kit. This has been so helpful for me. If its actually 18kt, what color will that turn? How will I know?

Get a silver test acid, not this 18k gold test acid. Real silver will leave a dark brownish red like drying blood. Fake will usually be blue or turquoise. In between, it can be a muddy combination. The yellow of.rhe solution will evaporate from the cloth you use to wipe the scratch up with leaving just the other colors.

the chain might be a lower grade silver jewelry same as the pendant looks like the handmade stuff from india, indonesia or thailand

or it could be bulk silver chain that was on a spool which would only be marked on the spool and someone just made it into a necklace.

one tip I found out. Magnet? don't waste your time. Sometimes the piece can be sterling silver and still be magnetic if there is a little nickel among the remaining percentage of metals

If the silver acid is expired. How do you dispose of it??

Neutralize it with baking soda until it stops reacting. Be sure you are either outdoors or in a specially ventilated area. Then let it evaporate and dispose in your trash Or if you have hazardous waste I your city you can have them dispose of it.

If it's silver plate will it still turn that blue color? This is the problem I'm having find an answer too online. I have a bunch of silver pieces that I've been going over today. I realize that many metals can tarnish and clean up and look like silver. But I want to be sure before I try to lot them up that I am not selling my customer silver plate because it tested as silver ya know? lol...

Ok..I have a question..I test my silver usually with the 18k..I have a pendant..I have no clue if its silver or pewter..does pewter look like silver when its tested with 18k..maybe u ran into it once..lol
