We recently did a video where we tested different styles of bearings - standard, stainless, and ceramic - you can see that here: • TESTED! RC Bearings | ...
One of our major learnings was that cleaning the bearings and oiling them had a much bigger impact than the type of bearing itself!
That has driven us to do this test - which is the best RC bearing oil?!?!
We test these bearing oils:
- Liberty Oil: amzn.to/35jZia9
- Pro Shot Zero Friction: amzn.to/33dCvdy
- ACER SIN oil: amzn.to/35m3Qg3
- RC Tears: rover.ebay.com...
- ArrowMax High Speed Bearing Oil: amzn.to/337IVuC
- Yeah Racing Bearing Oil: amzn.to/2F5yjEN
The results were interesting, and certainly conclusive for our goals!

Lotsa stuff to add: * Drip viscosity (drip meter) mainly. For shaft lubrication staying power. * Heat - weight loss (evaporation) * Stack the bearings, run them at speed, like 50MPH equivalent. Measure the temperature very very accurately. You're done. Cooler wins. * Same as above except - run 8 bearings independently. Run all bearing to destruction. Give us all the data.

Love the Effort to find scientific results. RC Bearings are similar to Skateboard Bearings, and many skateboarders prefer to clean bearings with any household True Citrus Cleaner. The citrus removes oil and grime leaving the bearings completely clean. I Recommend a larger container to separate the dirt from the bearings, I use a Gatorade bottle and cut 1/4inch pieces of plastic straws to act as spacers between bearings to allow dirt to escape. Note that a lube that performs well during freespin may not perform as well under a load, thicker oils and even grease usually perform best but require a short break in period. Another test might include rolling down a hill and measuring distance. ? Great Video!!

Hi there, greetings from the UK. Great comparative video. Your idea to clean the bearings using mineral oil and leave them for a day is quite clever - I have seen so many different opinions out there that one gets easily confused. I will definitely have to try that out on my next build. Thanks for sharing.

For 9,000 RPM laptop fans, I decided to go with economy size liberty + Diamond Nano @5% - and that's my new squeek hammer. I just want it to last a year in the laptop - not 24 hours like the Dialectric Grease did. Currently running pheumatic oil - running silent but known to evaporate. Fortunately it supports an extra firm meniscus (drop-reservoir) until I get the good stuff. That layer thickness is actually very important for shaft lubrication endurance. Less if it doesn't evaporate - but it's kind of like a reserve supply - large e-motors have a felt reservoir that presses against the shaft.

You can also use a standard bearing friction test. Like the type used for automotive oil test. The oil is applied to a bearing race then the machine applies a wieghted friction untill the oil fails .. if for example if zddp is added to an automotive oil. The wear- friction is greatly reduced

Have a "trick" to cleaning bearings. I do this alot with baitcaster bearings. Maybe try this out and retest. Plastic cup..fill about 1/2" or so with ronsonol lighter fluid..Take hair buzzers or dog trimmer and turn them on..place cup against the trimmers at a spot that has the most vibration and you have a mini ultrasonic cleaner. You can actually see the crud come out. Do as long as you want. Take bearings out and place on paper towel, let dry or blow out. Spin a few times. add oil..

Back in the 80s-90's, Dan's Banna Lube was the deal. If you weren't using that, you weren't in the cool crowd 🤣I still think its a good product, but Dan's went out of business a long time ago. I think Liberty and Liquid Bearings are pretty much the same. I've used them on my O scale model railroad items with great success. MAYBE we can do another test on a bench rig using one of those basic wheel balancer stands on bearings you know?.. then modify it with a motor on a hinge that’s got a wheel mounted to the motor shaft that will spin at the same rpm/voltage. We lower the hinge so that both wheels are making contact and run a set voltage. Once we have a steady speed, raise the hinge (motor/wheel) “slave” so that it’s just the wheel on the balancing stand rolling by itself with the bearing we’re testing. … I’m thinking of this bcs it’ll allow us to test higher levels of friction and put the oils under stress to reveal pros and cons of the oils. This was a KILLER vid I came here specifically to find an oil demo like this THANKS!!😁 but since you have all these oils now and bearings, I think with ALL THE PPL DOING SPEED RUNS that your bench test will grab a lot of attention! Would you consider it?

They probably use a thicker oil/grease from the factory so the bearings last longer. I’m looking at something for extremely dirty running, muddy/dusty pits, dirt roads and wet grass are what most of my running is in, and I know it destroys factory bearings quicker than acceptable. Gonna do some testing with marine grease as well as moly/ptfe fortified grease and then maybe some kind of dry lube to see if any of them stand out.

@@RoadsideRC Hmm, maybe I’ll do a video on it cause I see no dirty rc bearing lube tests, I’m sure there’s some way that’s better than factory in making bearings last longer in dirt =)
@aaronperelmuter8433
@aaronperelmuter8433 2 года назад
@@travispratt6327 It’s simply not feasible to perform ‘dirty’ bearing tests, as you mentioned. This is because unless you start with a pure, unadulterated substance to use as your dirt (obviously actual dirt can’t be used as it would have enormous variation from one scoop to the next, having different proportions of clay, sand, soil, etc), get the exact identical amount which has been weighed on a digital scale measuring to 0.01g accuracy and mix the sand or whatever you use into the same amount of each lubricant you’re wanting to test. Then you have to figure out a way to mix all the oils with your dirt but so that each is as close to identically mixed as possible, somehow pack that crud into the bearing, put the seals back on and then start testing. Oh, did I forget to mention that you had also better brush up on your chemistry because some oils or their additives might react with your choice of dirt. If this occurs, that oil can not be included as you’ve changed it at a chemical/molecular level in some cases, depending upon how reactive the oil might be. As I’m sure you can now understand there are just SO many variables with the kind of testing you want that unless you have a huge budget to spend on your testing procedures, you just won’t be doing any form of scientifically sound tests. It’s not something for the faint-hearted, takes hours and hours, if not several days and is boring and laborious, especially if not being paid to do the testing.
@travispratt6327
@travispratt6327 2 года назад
@@aaronperelmuter8433 All I’d have to do is simply use the bearings and run enough tests to have a big enough sample size to be able to draw conclusions that certain lubricants generally last longer. The variables don’t matter as long as the sample size is large enough with the same varying terrain. I’d also not want to remove any contaminants that may interact, or limit the dirt to only one kind of dirt, these wouldn’t give real world conclusions.
@travispratt6327
@travispratt6327 2 года назад
@@aaronperelmuter8433 That said, it would probably take a minimum of 10 rounds of running the bearings till they failed for each lubricant to even get a semi-accurate result, and is too much time and effort for me.

@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 3 года назад
You might be right, and I did think about that. I picked the ProTek bearings, as they are supposed to be high quality. Even with that, there was still some noticeable variation between the bearings in the pack. That is also why I calculated the difference between cleaned and oiled for each bearing. My concern with using the same one repeatedly was any change induced by "wearing-in" the bearings that folks refer to. I guess doing A-B-A testing would help eliminate that some.

@aaronperelmuter8433 2 года назад
@@RoadsideRC Actually, there are several ways to find out. The most glaringly obvious of them is the simple fact that _every_ oil you used had very similar viscosities, and none are anything like as horribly viscous as is car engine oil - regardless of its rating and/or brand. Car engines have to perform under incredibly punishing conditions, hence why they need to start out so thick and viscous, so that by the end of the 10,000 or 15,000 or 20,000 miles when it’s due to be replaced, it still retains some ability to prevent metal on metal contact, even though by then it will have been heavily watered down, taken on loads of metallic particles and shavings, absorbed various acids and carbon and soot from the combustion process and so on. Don’t use car engine oils in your rc bearings, it’s a terrible idea and you’d be better off leaving the original grease that they’re sold with. Essentially, engine oil is half way to being a grease especially when compared to the very thin, low viscosity rc bearing oils. After all, grease is nothing more than oil with a thickening additive, very often either lithium or molybdenum.

Those types of tests shown in this video are highly inaccurate so don't bother with them. This particular tests shows almost no actual results because the bearings have massive differences between each other in the first place and more importantly, there is no load on the system. The bearings could be slipping more or less because there is no load. The video just shows that cleaned bearings are turning better than the dirty ones which should be obvious. Try a ceramic bearing set at the track vs a steel one, you would observe a quieter car, electronics that heat up less and ultimately a slightly longer runtime with the ceramic bearing set. I am telling you this from personal experience. They also don't require frequent maintenance or replacement as the steel ones. I blew up consistently several motor bearings. No issues with the ceramic replacements so far. The oil in this situation matters so little that you shouldn't even bother that much selecting a brand or switching to another brand. Just clean your ceramic bearings ideally before each race, lube them with light oil and you should be fine in the long run.
