The consumer release of the HTC Vive is finally here! We've been testing the Vive Pre for a while and the final headset for about a week, playing VR games with tracked controllers in a roomscale setup. Jeremy and Norm discuss the setup process, ergonomics, comfort features, and launch content for Steam VR. Plus, we play through Valve's first-party VR game, The Lab!

If I'm gonna spend $800 on a game accessory, I want as much information as possible to make my decision. As a potential consumer, I appreciate the hour long video.

I really suggest waiting a while to see a price drop. I feel this will have the same effect as many early adopter products have and that's being overpriced. It'll probably follow the path of bluray and flat screens and drop in price.
@indienerdsdotcom
@indienerdsdotcom 8 лет назад
+arthos4551 obviously it will fall in price - economy of scale ... but that means you have to live without until that happens. and actually the next gen will likely be the same price, just even better. so you could pick up a DK2 cheaper now used ... I have been using the Vive DK1 for 4 months ... I would never want to miss that time :D

Not interested in VR myself, but this definitely looks better than the Rift. It's not even close. They made all the correct decisions: placing the sensors in the headset, putting a camera in there, getting 3rd parties proficient at motion controls, etc. Again, I have no dog in this race, but the Vive is clearly the superior platform, despite all the hype and support for the Rift.
@PHeMoX
@PHeMoX 8 лет назад
+lednerg That's definitely true. It also has superior head tracking, something the Oculus Rift really does a poor job at. I've recently used the PS VR now and must say that's not that far apart from the OR, which is insane when you compare the cost.

+magzire Elite Dangerous on the Rift DK2 was stunning, I mean amazingly awesome. VR really makes you feel like you're there, the sense of size and scope, it's really difficult to hype it too much when it's done well. I more than once found myself reaching for controls that didn't exist. It's really hard to oversell how great the experience is. For racing I played iRacing which is a hardcore sim and again it's quite amazing. You find yourself judging distances like you do in real life, by distance and sense of speed as opposed to memorisation or following any race lines. Elite is way more impressive, but if you have a wheel setup iRacing with a Rift makes you feel like you're legit driving around. The downside on both is pixelation - the resolution of the screens will need to greatly increase before you don't see that, but honestly it's not normally a big deal. The one place it actually is a bit of a big deal is with stuff like iRacing because you can't always see far enough ahead to make accurate judgements on when to brake and turn, etc. The final products bump the resolution specs up a bit more, but we're still a few years from stuff looking real. But it's not about looks, it's about feeling, and it feels real. Which is another concern, motion sickness will be a big issue for a large number of people. Not a majority, but a sizeable number none the less.

@arthos4551
@arthos4551 8 лет назад
+A.D.Dudes We arent talking about just one item purchase. We are speaking about high end PCs that are capable of VR and the headset itself. I have never seen a high end PC in a public school unless it was for a special teaching. Thats at most 1800 dollars for each setup. Thats alot more than a iPad. I think what would work is a deal with schools like Dell does. Unless a price drop in headsets or high end PCs happen I don't see this happening any time soon. Also to clarify I'm talking about multiple headsets for a class not just one shared set.
@ADDudes
@ADDudes 8 лет назад
+arthos4551 Definitely see your point regarding the initial expense. However, I could see them buying a few headsets + high end computers and adding them to a lab. Make it a part of extra curricular activities. Possibly working with the PC makers to create a subsidized package.
@arthos4551
@arthos4551 8 лет назад
A.D.Dudes agreed. I remember in my old elementary school we only had a few computers so only a few people got to use it each day. That's how I could see this working.

@erebostd
@erebostd 8 лет назад
It's about the 360 degree rotation which the vive is capable of. The minimum space for walking is about 1,5x2m - that's enough to have plenty of fun. Or you just use the standing version, than you have also 360 degrees of freedom.
@Niosus
@Niosus 8 лет назад
+Seggins Productions There is a standing option in the setup phase, although some games do require room scale. Steam should add a logo/filter to indicate that. Either way, you're paying 200 extra but you're getting the motion controllers and the second lighthouse. I think it's unlikely that the Oculus Touch controllers are going to be cheaper than 150 so I doubt you'll have any monetary gains. Also keep in mind that the Vive has the Chaperone system which is also just handy if you want to sit down or take a drink. On the other side, Oculus has a smoother experience right now. The hardware is more polished and is easier to set up. When it comes to content, they're both surprisingly solid. Oculus has Valkyrie, Lucky's tale, Chronos, etc while Vive has Hover Junkers, Tilt Brush, The Lab and a bunch of other stuff on Steam. I recommend you choosing based on those factors because you're spending that 200 by the end of the year anyway on Touch controllers.
@erebostd
@erebostd 8 лет назад

@WarpRulez
@WarpRulez 8 лет назад
MrSquishedsquashed Citation needed. I can't find a single reference anywhere that Portal 2 supports the Vive (or any other VR headset for that matter). Valve doesn't seem to be interested in adding Vive support to _any_ of their existing games, nor promoting the device as a platform for any existing games.

Is there any work being done on using a surround sound setup for a true surround headphoneless experience? I mean, the Vive knows where you are in the room space, so volumes of the various speakers could be adjusted automatically. Although I don't know how well a 7.1 system can create a full auditory surround experience when you're walking around.

What the fuck are you talking about? PSVR is $856 while Vive is $500 on amazon. Not to mention HTC Vive is objectively better anyways. Before you tell me I'm wrong, I took the price of the PS4 Pro, the camera and the headset as to assume the person looking to get into VR has a PS4 (let's face it, the number of people with a PS4 Pro compared to the number of people with a PS4 is currently very small). If someone already has a PC they don't need to buy a new PC to get the Vive.
@TheBadElf
@TheBadElf 7 лет назад
+Shadow For your argument to work, the PSVR buyer doesn't already own a console the headset is compatible with but the Vive buyer already owns a PC that's powerful enough to handle VR. So... what the fuck are *YOU* talking about?
@shadowkiller0071
@shadowkiller0071 7 лет назад
***** The average PSVR buyer likely owns a PS4. and needs to buy a PS4 Pro to get PSVR. It depends on which platform you own. It costs more for a PS4 player to get a PSVR headset than it does a PC gamer to get a Vive.

It is what is available to me now. Right now, I would say (for me) there is no competition on which headset has more content and refinement (this may change in the future though). It is in everyone's best interest for both to succeed, so I hope plenty of people enjoy both platforms. I can't wait to see what Oculus brings with the touch, even if it is worse than Vive room scale.

Well, today alone, plenty of titles launched on Steam ready to be played with the VIVE. Besides, with Facebook controlling Oculus, I can't imagine why anyone would want to buy into the ecosystem they're trying to create.

+Gentleman What is your definition of a review?
@erwinlommer197
@erwinlommer197 8 лет назад
+Decenium Something that is more about the pros and cons of the system. About the price and usability, about its strengths and weaknesses, how it compares in different areas to competitors. Not a product presentation which only focuses on showing what it can do and what comes with it. What it can't do and what doesn't come with it is equally important.

Erwin Lommer well ... I think you need to see the review again because prior to actually playing with the device they went into everything and how ti compares to the competition soooo yeah

how the hell does it take 56 minutes to review something? ffs most of it is just you guys talking in front of it and rarely ever you using it, show the device, get some nice angles, put some nice music to it, show some gameplay show some reactions sorted. ffs i cant watch this.

+DesignVisStudios Or we need convenient videos which we don't have to take an hour out of our day to watch? For viewers who work full time and have other shit to do watching this hour long video is basically taking 20%+ of their remaining free time which is asking a lot for a single video. There's a reason shorter videos are typically more popular

whats the maximum space you can have in a square? I've heard it' 4.5m x 4.5m, is this true?
@littlenickjr
@littlenickjr 8 лет назад
+Molten ZAZ I tried finding the video source but couldnt, in it they were able to play in a space of 45ftx45ft. Its from either Node or BrandJLA, but again, i couldnt find in what video they tested this. Though then its less an issue of tracking and more so cable length. The Oculus currently allows you to add trackers in order to increase play space, and the Vive will be adding this feature. Though that 45x45 instance was only using the 2 provided Lighthouse trackers.

Wonder if the breakout box (extender) works with the Rift?
@MrEmub
@MrEmub 8 лет назад
+Neddskorg Because I have both HMD on pre-order and I was wondering if I would unplug the Vive and Plug in the Rift into that box would it work hence my question. I like the idea of having an HDMI+USB3 breakout box at the front of t he PC, It would help protect the rear ports against cable pulls. I've not seen such a box on Amazon, etc yet.

just looking at the first few minutes and it seems like the Vive is going to be a lot harder to set up, meaning it will be not so good for casual / mobile usage, if I want to move it from one room to another with an mITX computer system. Power required for the headset + each lighthouse ? and you need both lighthouses ? plus two or more for the computer, thats a lot
