Correction: The outline shown in the card compartments of the Olympus cameras stands for a Smart Media card.

We actually have SmartMedia cards and they're being used for our collection of Rio-500 media players. Have a number of turn-of-the-Century digital cameras - mostly QuickTakes, Ixlas and Mavicas - with some later model Kodaks from the last dozen or so years.

Easter Egg: In Ubuntu Linux, the icon for a camera card (SD/CF/whatever) is actually a SmartMedia card. At first glance it looks like an SD card... I have four digicams that take SmartMedia, two of which work without a card installed and I have an 8MB and a 4MB card. TL;DR My SmartMedia cameras are: Trust 3.3 MegaPixels (it's the worst digicam I have apart from a 1994 Orion which has 320*240 resolution and stores JPEG internally at 10% quality). This has internal flash so it doesn't need a SmartMedia card. Aiptek PocketCam Smart 2 Megapixels (boxed). It's manual focus fixed objective, it doesn't have a preview screen but it takes excellent photos, really the best fixed objective camera I have, better than a few of my moving objective cameras, but has poor low light sensitivity. This has internal SRAM, so if you remove the batteries, the photos get lost unless you have the card in. Logitech ClickSmart 510 from 1999 which has a 640*480 resolution, takes decent pictures and has impressive low light sensitivity for the time. This does not work without a card. Olympus C-820L (boxed) which also takes 640*480 but appears to have twice the green pixel cells, it can take 1024*768 and the photos have details that can't be explained by interpolation. With the figure of 810000 Pixel CCD I guess it has twice the amount of green pixels. Colors do appear pixelated in this resolution. I haven't tried if it works without a card. Also if you're still reading... I have two of those 2002/3 model Medion PCs silver/gray with a card reader that has four slots and four LEDs and since last week I have a MemoryStick and now can light up all four LEDs! That's quite an achievement.

All “Camedia” branded Olympus cameras use Smart Media cards. I believe there were two variants - 3.3v and 5v but i might be wrong. Really glad to see a camera related video.

The nikon makes nice photos, they’d still be quite serviceable if you didn’t have a reasonably modern smartphone. The video quality reminds me of those cheap Aiptek cameras from around the same time period.

I used to have an Aiptek camcorder, its video and audio quality actually were quite a bit better than this Nikon. But then my Aiptek camcorder was a bit newer, from 2007.

Yes, that was a super good deal! I would have got it also.

The nikon was great under controled conditions. I sold lots of pictures made with 5400 and the 5000. The print quality was very good to 11x14 inches. I printed with an epson 7800 printer.

I have all of the still cameras, never owned the video cam, but I did use it for a while. The Nikon produces great photos, you can buy the battery grip for it, then you can use AA batteries...the bad...if you use a external flash on board, the internal flash pops just the same. The Oly's are great cameras, the Camedia lines offer some of the sharpest photos you'll ever see off of a point and shoot camera, I enjoy the Camedia line...I own many! The media for the Olys are Smart Media, make sure you use only the 3.3v version. Awesome score and even better price! All cameras can shoot RAW, in this case I believe it will be in a TIFF wrapper for all...could be wrong on that as I haven't played with mine in awhile. ~Jack, VEG

Thanks for the info! I have kept the better one of the two Olympus cameras, which luckily also happened to be the one with working battery compartment lock. I am not going to spend any money on a Smart Media card, but I might come across one some day. The Nikon indeed shoots high quality photos in a TIFF wrapper, but the file is so large it takes almost a minute to write to the CF card :D

I have a Sony DSC-F828 from 2003/4 and an Olympus SP-350 from 2005 I got used. Despite these cameras being over 15 years old, they hold up surprisingly well quality wise. Sure, they're "only" 8 MP in resolution, but they have lower noise than a current Canon point & shoot with 20 MP. For one the newer canon has a slightly smaller sensor (the Sony is 8.8 x 6.6 mm, the Olympus is 7.11 x 5.33 mm, and the Elph 180 is 6.16 x 4.62 mm), so cramming 20 megapixels worth of sensels into a sensor the size of an average cell phone cameras sensor.... noise galore. Old =/= outdated, in some contexts :)

The Olympus used smartmedia card, they're common, I've got a lot of them, I've a c4000 zoom also and a c220 zoom.

I'd like to think that covid has given the light to some, if not most people that some stuff make no sense to have in your possessions anymore, that's why they're sold off so cheaply. But, anyhow, whatever you can maximize on, might as well beat the iron while it's hot I guess... Thanks for the video, bro!

In my case covid has actually made me collect even more junk 😂. Before I only had 2 VCRs, now I have 5 VCRs plus 2 HI8 cameras.

I have the Sony TRV110 Digital 8 that plays all the video 8 formats. Bought it new in 2000 :) Even plays NTSC tapes as its the PAL version.

Some years ago I had a Sony TRV110 camcorder for a little while, too. It was a very nice camcorder.

@@DrCassette I bought another "working" tape mech for my TRV900 and after swapping it out it no longer loads or ejects the mech so I swapped the mech back but that is the same so one of the 2 circuit boards must be no faulty :( Luckily I have another TRV900 which has perfect video and looks like new but has the audio drop outs too but I found that after about 30 min into a 60 min tape the audio drop reduce dramatically then stop completely for the last 15min of the tape. I just recorded from the camera with no drop outs and perfect video. This TRV900 has a number 2 also on the left tape guide base. I have a 3rd TRV900 arriving soon so will see how that performs and a Sony DCR-HC1000 3CCD handycam arriving this week. I picked up a Sony DCR-HC3 HDV handycam for $50 AUD this week as it had the known tape mech loading issue. The door wont close after ejecting a tape. Its the mode switch which I fixed with a spray of contact cleaner :)

320x240 video res? or more?
@DrCassette
@DrCassette 3 года назад
In the high quality mode the resolution is 640x480 at 15 fps. The low quality mode would be 320x240.

I have an Olympus 8080, which I think was top of the line back then for Olympus. It is a VERY clunky camera when turned on and off..

The video quality of the Nikon Coolpix from 2003, made me go back to 2006, when the videos on RU-vid had that quality.

So, this comes from an auction that went really bad for the seller. On top of zero gain (s)he had to go through the effort of packing and shipping stuff. Hope you send some kind message to him/her.

I was going to say those Olympus cameras likely used SmartMedia cards but I see you are already aware. They are still available on Ebay, usually second hand for not too expensive and even some new old stock too. Might be worth picking up some for a future video testing those other cameras.

I had a Sony W1 in 2004. This Nikon is worse in almost all aspects. So i guess it wasn't on top of the market in it's day.

I would appreciate more cassette or Hifi related videos. Nothing wrong with having some side-projects every now and then but your channel name suggests something else.
@DrCassette
@DrCassette 3 года назад
Are you serious??? You do realize out of the past 10 videos, 7 were about HiFi equipment and 5 were about audio or video cassettes? The channel name is what I chose in 2008, it is what it is. But for the past 13 years I have uploaded videos about whatever I wanted, and I will keep it this way. I don't expect anybody to watch my videos if they are not interested!
@senilyDeluxe

My channel name is SenilyDeluxe (aka Senil Data Systems) and I haven't made a single video about dementia (although I do have quite a bunch of nonsense). Why didn't you complain about that?
