I suspect the difference is the single sided cutter. I use Dspiae cutters by far the best cutter I have ever used but also the only single blade cutter I have ever had and it leaves a flatter cut., great video.

Great review i have the trumpeter ones they work really well i also have the dispae 3.0 nippers plus tamiya and xuron ones and all i really use is the trumpeter ones looking foward to the lanc
I use the Citadel nippers. They have kept their edge well for about a years worth of use so far and they feel nice and hefty. They do open pretty wide when put down, this isn't a problem for me as I have hands like shovels.
I'm glad you like the nippers Nigel, you'll love the riveters I've ordered for you. BTW I only paid £16 for those nippers so half the price of Tamiya (£4 P&P). Riveters are 0.55, 0.65 and 0.75 so ideal for 1:48 models. As with most things, you get what you pay for, but I think those Trumpeter single blade cutters are great value for the money, compare well with my Despiae and GodHand single blade cutters. I'm a bit of a tool collector and tend to like try all available . The stop pin with my Despiae cutters, I found the action of how it stops blades opening too far tended to lift a thou each stop and eventually pulled it out, losing spring and stop. I had them repaired but found was working loose again, so I removed pin, applied some super glue (Loctite stud lock would have been ideal, had none) and reinserted pin, stopped this problem. You may have same problem with the Trumpeters, so a heads up for you and the fix.
Had been thinking of buying some single sided nippers for a while. Saw this and thought they were worth a try. Initial impression was why haven't I got something like this before. Though there is significantly less cleanup needed I have spent less time finding pieces that have pinged off some where. So far they seem to be pretty good.
I'll be watching the Lancaster build with even more interest to see how the Trumpeter nippers hold up to sustained use. My Tamiya cutters aren't quite as sharp as they used to be after two & a half years of almost daily use so I've been considering replacing them. But what I usually do is make a cut fairly close to the part and tidy up with a scalpel blade, so if it means that the bits I trim off are slightly smaller using the Trumpeter cutters, I don't see that there's any advantage, apart from cost.
Okay... I'll play lame duck here. I bought two cheap pairs of mini-wire cutters at the local canadian tire store and have used them for years. While they do NOT give precise edge-on cuts, they work quite well. A little sanding or x-acto blade work and all is well. Total cost $8.00 CDN
My hardware store mini wire cutters are generally to thick to even fit in-between parts and sprue, I use them only to cut sprues themselves. Removing necessity to use sanding or xacto is kind of entire point of using good nippers, when you work on Gundam with thousands of small parts it can speed up work considerably. :)
By my experience, the single blade nipper is like night and day compared to "traditional" ones. It's like cutting butter with a warm knife. Once you have tried it, you cannot go back to a two blades model, whatever the brand, even the best one. The stress mark, numb is far less pronounced with a single blade. And that is even more obvious and important on darker colours parts, such as blues, reds, backs, as the stress leaves white marks which are then much more visible. I have a DSPIAE and a MADWORKS, the later being my go to, but the DSPIAE is an excellent tool too, top quality for both. Try it, and you will feel the difference with the first cut. Less less stress during the cut, and thus on your plastic part.
also, trumpeter is meant to leave a nub if one goes across. the second cut places the anvil side against the edge and nip again then it will be flush (should)
I've got to be honest. I was underwhelmed when I got my Trumpeter snips. But I can't justify spending over £50 on some better snips. I suppose you can't expect much for 15 quid?
have you ever tried sharpening one of those cheap nippers. i have a a pair from the local hardware store and since i got the tamiya ones i have only used the cheap ones for things like thick sprues and thin wire and such and they have become somewhat dull from the past 4 years of use. also could you do a video on how you have organized your workbench. i am looking for inspiration for better organizing and use of space on my table
Hi, They have performed really well. I feel they last as long as Tamiya nippers under normal use, however i prefer the double bladed tamiya style for now.
