RWU Marine Science Students took on an independent study to test 22 ablative bottom paints
MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT:
They designed and built 10 barges which carry multiple panels of each of the 22 bottom paints and 2 control panels - 1 with Blue paint (for color) and another painted only with TotalProtect barrier coat.
the barges were placed in 5 different locations in New England
- Every panel was numbered, removing the brand and name from the entire experiment (until the end!)
- Every 2 weeks the students check the barges and
- take a photo of each panel for comparison
- take notes on the hard and soft growth visible on each panel
- mark any sealife or changes to the panel
- lightly swipe a sponge over the panel after review to simulate occasional boat movement
- rotate the panels on the barge
- replace panels and barge in same location
When RWU shares the results with us, their research will tell us a lot about which paint formulas work best and in which kind of locations.
We understand that location of your berth or mooring greatly affects the performance of your bottom paint as does - of course - the paint you apply.
We will use these results to share with you, to make the best bottom paint possible!
Contribute your own bottom paint results. Did you paint perform well? Share your location and enter your boat, harbor and application details and help to better understand and develop paints that work the way you expect them to - TAKE THE BOTTOM PAINT SURVEY

You can also test the stone wall for paint quality, because there is lots of paint on that wall.

will panels be rotated, as some panels will clearly receive more water deflection?

radbcc Yes panels are rotated bi weekly and lightly 'swiped' with a sponge on each rotation to simulate boat movement. Thanks for watching!
