Back in the 70's and 80's, my dad was a big craftsman guy. When I started buying my own tools I did the same like mid 99's. Well, about a month or so back I was out and need a pair of channel lock plyers. I stopped in Lowe's because I didn't want to drive the 25 miles home and bought a pair of craftsman. They looked better than the ones I had at home. Build quality IMO no better the half the other tools out there. Do I think I'll buy Craftsman again? Hard question.

Great video! The problem with tool sets like that is they put too much "filler" to bring up the tool count in the set (bits) Why don't they include pliers and maybe a ball peen hammer?

naw just don't include filler items, or at least include the RBRT/Xtract or whatever the Facom version are called bits. Comparing the price to the Mac/facom/usag Variants, yeah its a good value.

I would assume that is a 90 tooth gear with stacked pawls, and those wrenches are essentially MAC rebranded believe it or not. I think the days of picking on imports are over, everyone has caught up. Decent kit, good video young men 👍

nope, non of the overdrive is MAC rebranded. They just applied the RBRT design to the gunmetal crome line of tools Craftsman offers. the ratchet is a updated 120T gunmetal chrome ratchet. its a 90t gear double stack just like the 120xp gear wrench, to get the 180t. MAC/Proto 90t is completely different design and fully made in the usa.

You were turning the wrench the wrong way on the open end, it's not as big of a deal if it isn't overly tightened but it's double important on the nonslip style wrenched where the serrations are placed

Kurt and Nick I love the “dramatic” opening you guys should have been actors, just kidding. I ended up getting a set of the overdrive SAE wrenches after I saw another RU-vid guy Jeff’s garage adventures talk about having 6 point combination wrenches for stubborn bolts. According to what I read the wrenches are comparable to the RBRT from Mac. I don’t know if that applies to the sockets

It is very similar to MAC RBRT sockets and wrenches. Minus the price tag. I wish they'd sell individual socket sets rather than a kit. Those sockets would be good to have as a backup. I prefer to use regular sockets so you don't round fasteners. I think if you do encounter rounded stuff, these sockets would definitely be good to have.

We bought it as a kit to pull out only when fasteners are rounded or rusted. It may come in good use that way

Although it's just an aesthetic thing, I love the gunmetal look. The "overdrive" series looks like it replaces all the gunmetal series kits but with a grey case and the new "grip" teeth on all the various parts. Unfortunately never saw the older 154 piece gunmetal kit ever go on sale, so never did buy it. The 121 piece kit seems more popular and goes on sale all the time ($99 right now). The high price now might also be due to the fact that all this stuff was only recently released. The 284 pc kit looks like it'd be great for filling out a tool cart, but I think the wrenches not being 12-point would be kind of annoying - not the main set you want to use for your daily drivers, but something to complement what you already have. The "deep" sockets all being about semi-deep also probably makes them more of a complementary set.

I'm thinking that your rating isn't fair. I'm not a fan of modern-day Craftsman tools at all...I'm an old guy. But this is more of a specialized item. You can't compare it to a daily use set. If used daily, you will tear things up. For what it's made for, other than the sizing issues, it ain't half bad. Neither is the price when compared to the same technology from other companies. By the way, Capri makes a great set of wrenches like these...wave drive...maybe is the name. They are fantastic and priced reasonably.

That is why I like pack out. I can customize for what I need and I buy full sets instead of buying a kit like you did and put it in the pack out. When you have a craftsman blow molded case with skip sizes it is really a waste of time buying a set like that cause now you have to go buy another case to put the missing sockets that craftsman did put in your kit cause they think you did not need and gave you all those stupid Allen keys instead. Why they (Craftsman)have not figured out not to screw their customers and and sell no skip set

I think the price is fair considering the us dollar is in the toilet with gold at $2000 an ounce. The harbor freight quinn set which is just rebramded gear wremch is like $400 bucks. The cases look nice and all but the more complete set whih i believe os marketed as loke 284 piece is around $380 with no plastic case but it seems like thats marketed for beginner techs who prefer not getting a cumbersome plastic hinged case since the 284 pc set comes with trays that can be put in tool box drawers for handy organization. Idk how i feel about the mee dual pawl 90 tooth ratchet design. On one hand its nice theyve updated the gunmetal ratcets to be servicable but i really like my dual pawl 60 tooth\ 120 position gunmetal ratchets despite tje closed head non servicabilty aspect. Theyfeel really smooth and the back drag is ! manageable. I think i paid around $120 for all 3 of them. But i do like that they have a new super slim profipe 180 tooth ratchet in this line. I think its rare to find a taiwanese tool these days that isnt worth the price pr a piece of junk unless youre going with the cheapest harbor freight option. I hope the overdrive wrenches which are mac rbrt clones are here to stay. I got the metric 11 piece for Christmas and have yet to use it but i like six point wrenches and they pair well with my mac six point flex head precision torque set. I think the v series craftsman line is a higher quality tool. I am planning on getting the 3 piece long flex head comfort grip ratchet set but finances are tough atm and tha set is like $200 for 3 ratchets but i like that the flex head on the v series dont have a detent that forces the flex position into a certain angle like the 72 tooth Craftsman flex heads or the matco\gearwrench locking flex heads. It can be nice to have and i like the detent on locking flex heads but sometimes i just want a flex head that has a smoother Acton in the flexible joint and is tight due to pod manufacturing when it comes to the yoke and the head fitting together like a snap om ratchet. I also really would like the long flex jead v series wrenches but don't like the size skips for $175 and only 7 pieces so might go with the gear wrench or even the icon\kabo spline drive double flex long wrenches. It would be nice if they put out a new version of the b series long flex head wreches with the six point zero degree offset fixed end in the overdrive series but without size skipping and maybe evem the "tight torque" aka rbrt feature on the fixed end. Many people love the quality feel and performance of those long v series wrenches but the main comment everyone makes is dissatisfaction with size skipping. I think it goes 10,12,14,16,17,18 and 19mm but i may be wrong. Its not bad for someone who focuses on toyotas like myself but for the same price i can get a more complete set with comparable features. All in all with this new line amd other current Craftsman offerings by sbd i really dont get why people are always digging into craftsman and saying that the old sears Craftsman tools are so much more supperior. That tri lobe ratchet you have may take more of a beating but ive seen tje 3/8 gunmetal 120t ratchets fail only whem taken to around 200 lbs/ft which is beyond what a 3/8 ratchet should endure or be used for.i think modern tools are mostly better than anything made in the 70's or 80's but people like to wax nostalgic about the times when tools were made in the us and minimum wage earned 95 ounces of gold a year and going to sears was the pinacle of capitalist consumerism which is far from the big box store, outsourced third world labor stagnated wages and a!erican labor markets transision from manufacturing leader to a service industry of disposible underpaid workers. It may be sad amd foreign to many older people who grew up when things were better but its the way things are now and i dont see ot ever going back to what it was but luckily Taiwan tools are getting better in quality and in many cases they are almost as good as their Japanese and german comparables for a fraction of the price and im ok with that. As far as the wallmart shopper mentality and the solidifoed transition from quality american made goods to disposible lower cost production alternatives im not a fan but you've gotta take the wins when you can these days

Go price a MAC rbrt complete kit then come back to review this product. They give you most of the tools and 90% of the RBRT design(only missing 2 teeth from the original), they also happen to go on sale the majority of the time. Its a great kit, Most kits have compromises, including the kit you bought 10y ago. I have lost of kits including USA made Craftsman, most include useless filler and the worst ratchets. personally i always give away the ratchets, and transfer the tools over to my own box with my preferred ratchets.

In my opinion it doesn’t matter what direction you use the wrench because in the real world you wont always have access to “do it right” all wrenches have a 15 degree offset for getting in awkward areas
@mushieslushie
@mushieslushie 7 месяцев назад
@@thenkgarage It doesn't matter most of the time, but it is designed to be used a certain way. Just think of a pipe wrench and how its designed for leverage and grip in once direction, a open end wrench that is designed that way for the same reason. Also these have extra serrations that are supposed to help grip the nut and if you use it backwards they aren't going to be doing anything.
