In an earlier video I showed how to make a doublet antenna that would cover all the amateur radio bands 80-10m. In this video I take it out in the field to test it.

Very interesting setup you have there. It looks really small and portable. Amazed at the distances you are able to reach. I found this video and the part 1 very useful as I am studying for my Amateur Radio foundation license and I find the antennas topic Moore difficult to fully understand. Thanks for sharing

Good job Richard, the antenna is simple to make and your demo proves it works well. It would have been nice if you had a more distant contact, but, it was daytime on the lower bands.

Have seen many comments that a 1:4 balun is not necessary when feeding open line and a 1:1 balance to unbalance type gives a better match and transfer of power on the bands above the 40 meters. It may also make it possible for the K3 atu to operate. Ever considered trying this configuration? 73 Rick G6AKG

Worth a try. The 4:1 transformer does help getting a match in some cases.

Great video again Richard. I always thought that the KX2 built in tuner could tune nearly everything. Did you made a comparison between the external (Elecraft T1?) and the internal. A doublet seems to be a really great antennena for portable operation. 73, Stephan, DF6PA
@g3cwi_Radio_Adventures
@g3cwi_Radio_Adventures 4 года назад
I did not make the direct comparison. I think the external tuner I used has more discrete lumped elements so it should give better matching. Maybe I will do a video comparison of the T1, the KX2 and the mAT tuner. That might be interesting.

Love the idea...been off the air for a few months when moving to a new home. Looking for new antenna ideas and this is interesting to me. Question...how do I 'know' the impedance of an antenna so that I can determine what kind of balun or unun that I will need? It is as simple as plugging it in to my analyzer and seeing what it is, and then determine what ratio balun or unun to create? Thanks. 73 de KD8YQX
@g3cwi_Radio_Adventures

The impedance of the antenna will vary across the frequency range. Don’t worry about it too much!

Hi Richard am I understand this correctly you’ve got the ladder line connected to a 4-1 Balum then a short bit of coax to a 1-1 unbalanced to unbalanced unun? Then on to an atu ?

Nice deployment, worth especially if staying a little while. Would mention that some twists in ladder line could actually help cancel radiation from any slight imbalance of current. 73
@g3cwi_Radio_Adventures
@g3cwi_Radio_Adventures 4 года назад
Thanks for the suggestion on the line. Do you have any reference that shows how that works?
@elwood.downey
@elwood.downey 4 года назад
@@g3cwi_Radio_Adventures In reviewing references I think I am wrong. It seems twisted pairs only reduce EMI in balanced configurations, not unbalanced. So, some twisting might still be helpful but not for the case I mentioned. Wikipedia has as good a summary as any at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twisted_pair .
@elwood.downey
@elwood.downey 4 года назад
One more swing at this dead horse: you might also want to keep the line a few spacings above the ground. Draping over weeds or grass should be enough, as you might already be doing. The idea being that although the electric field is pretty much confined to the plane containing the two wires, the magnetic field will be cylindrical centered along each wire. So it will attenuate if it encounters anything lossy, such as earth. It falls as 1/r^3 so a foot or two is plenty. Other than classic E&M texts, can't locate a reference for this off hand.
