Saul Leiter also shot with longer focal length for pretty much the same visual linguistic approach that I see in your photographs.

Your visual signature is really shining with the 135 field of view. It also is inspiring for me since I identify with longer focal lengths and the way you compose
@SchmandLappen
@SchmandLappen Год назад
What? How can a relatively new focal length that differs from the ones he used before this and built his body of work be his "visual signature"? It's like saying "That new BMW that totally looks like a Lotus does really have that signature BMW look". Do you guys read your own comments before you hit the comment button?
@_parkphoto
@_parkphoto Год назад
@@Fujioh partly yes
@_parkphoto
@_parkphoto Год назад
@@SchmandLappen really fascinated by your comment - I don't think you understood the nuance in my suggestion. I merely mean that his visual signature, which already exists, is showing up in a unique way with this focal length/field of view. And this lens may be a catalyst for further development of his visual signature. Each of us as photographers has a way of seeing the world. I really admire Faizal's, and also identify with it as some of my own work has a similar look. So I've found it very interesting and inspirational to see his signature evolve through the years and become clearer and clearer. Different focal lengths will show different facets of one's visual signature - and perhaps unlock new ways of seeing that continue the evolution of one's signature. I see this lens for him as a fascinating new facet. Also, I don't appreciate your degradation of my comment as absurd. But this is, after all, the internet. lol

I don’t know how on urth (haha pun intended) you think that part of town is boring?! Like whaaatt?! Bro there’s so much space, so much greenery and landscapes, and just scale to things. If you brought a prime 23mm lens or a zoom lens like the 18-55mm you’d be able to get so much of that beauty of a port you’re in. Downtown can feel so crowded at times with the skyscrappers and buildings close together, and although you can get a lot of great interesting shots, the port opens things up more and you can see that through how you videograph the scenery. Just translate those video shots to photography, see it differently and you’d be able to get more fun out of that area. Maybe that’ll help? Or shoot with someone who shoots oppositely from you, in opposite locations and they’ll show you their perspective and world. Or you can watch people who do it to get an idea or feel of how it’d look more ya’know?

I’ve use the 90 F2 Fuji, which is 135 mm. I love this lens as a lot of Street photographers don’t seem to like to use anything but very wide angle lenses. The only thing I would recommend is to use the focus limiter, so it doesn’t hunt as much. I don’t tend to have the 90 F2 on my camera all the time, as I switch out lenses. So I’m not worried about the weight.

I used to drive a box truck down there every day to pick up seafood and drive it north for restaurants and a fish market. If you go further down into the seaport near the water there are a bunch of wear houses with large scale seafood industry trade going on. Even go on the old pier but just walk onto the water side. Interesting stuff hidden in plain sight - Boats, fish, some of the most intestinal manual labor - sort of a look into a more rugged lifestyle reminiscent of the old Boston.

I actually went from a manual Meike 35mm f/1.7 to an Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 and it's great. The weight is noticeable at the end of the day and I have to say that I miss the small form of the Meike but I still have no regrets since I was used to my 50mm in my Panasonic L1 (which becomes a 100mm)

Excellent video! Nice lens! Great shots! I have to get into Boston again, been doing most of my shooting in the suburbs. When I do go into town, I end up taking the same photos and almost postcards of the city rather than more challenging areas. Awesome advise on looking in places that are more difficult or not aesthetically pleasing! Thanks for sharing!

I'm currently using a 32mm,51mm eq, on my Canon M50 but definitely looking at getting the 56mm lens which is around 90mm Eq. I also tend to see subjects a lot further away but also find that by the time I get close enough the opportunity has gone. I like the idea of shooting from afar and not spoiling the scene by getting too close or late!

I have the same lens and use it on my Leica M Type 262 range finder and my Sony A6600. It does remarkably well. I enjoy using the older Leica lenses (1930 to 1950's vintage), and some others non-Leica, such as the Minolta 90mm f/4 M mount lens.

Kind of a late comment but there is an 85mm F2 for Minolta SLR’s that I use on my Fuji camera and my Minolta film cameras. You might want to check it out too if you like this focal length. It’s about the same weight as the 90mm F4 but it can go to F2 and I think the image quality is pretty great.

Thanks for sharing these photos and your thoughts on this lens and specific focal length. A thought for "uninteresting" locations: usually (not always) there is something interesting to be found just about everywhere. It may not be TRADITIONALLY/TYPICALLY interesting, but that's the fun (to me) of photography - finding something most people miss in the ordinary. Especially with 135mm focal length, thinking small/intimate and textures might be a place to start? Cheers on your future adventures!

Nice video, inspired & inspiring photos. Would like to see more of your pov walks. My lens recommendation would be the Viltox 85mm/f1.8, sometimes you can find it used for 250 bucks or less, optical it's worth every penny, reminds me of vintage lenses like the Zukios and/or Takumars - nice colours, slightly muted ... Sure, it's bigger but not too heavy. Give it a try when you can.

Hi Faisal, nice video. You should try the Rokinon 85mm F1.8. It’s a very sharp lens and quite light and compact for such a long a fast lens. It’s not metal or as beautiful esthetically as the minolta, but it’s really useful.

Enjoyed the story vs POV. The story content is far more informative and gives the viewer information on how you are approaching the scene. I have used a 90mm with my Fuji and also find at times it is limiting when a subject that is too close. So, knowing that I concentrate on making images that that best matches the focal length I am using. IMHO, The images taken at the waterfront were not that interesting and once you were back in the city your subjects, composition and creativity changed considerably. Far more pleasing as your mood was more positive. Thanks for your videos and presenting your approach to street photography.

I like pain. Love it. It sounds so incredibly cliché, but I like to think that every, literally every place has a story to tell. So every place is worthy of a photo. I used to work on construction sites and even there I took very interesting photos (also a lot of bad ones, must say). Rhein II by Gursky was sold for a whopping 4,3 million dollars. Even that utterly boring picture has value. Anyhow. Keep doing what you do. Your videos and photos are a treat.

Hope this doesn’t com across as mean or angry sounding, but you used the phrase “stop down” to refer to the widest aperture in the lens. I just wanna point out that “stopping down” refers to closing the aperture down and the phrase you were probably intending to use was “opens up to”. Or maybe I misunderstood and I’m making a fool of myself. If so, then I’m sorry! Great photos by the way! Very interesting lens.

I have a question: What you refer as a 135mm "focal length" with a 90mm lens is actually a 135mm lens "field of view" on a crop sensor, isn't it? Becasue, with a 90mm lens you actually do not get the optical result (depth of field, compression, background blur and such) of a 135mm lens. Would be glad if you could clarify this subject for the sake of the journey. Thanks for sharing.
