I love the idea of ring planning but i just can't deal with the rings getting in the way of my hand when I'm writing and I refuse to remove a page every time i need to write in it
@almalauha

It's just a different way of working. I have used bound notebooks and diaries all my life until I discovered Filofax only last year. I don't need to write much on my diary pages so I don't have to take the pages out when I write on them. I use an A5 size organiser for a course and what I do is open the rings and leave them open, take a new page out, write on it, and then when it's full, put it in the organiser onto the left 'stack', then take a fresh page from the right 'stack', and just leave the rings open. If you have to flip back and forth a lot during a work session, then I'd just leave the rings closed after having taken plenty of new pages out. Then just work on those loose pages, and then when you are done for the moment, put the pages into the organiser. I know it's different, but I actually like that I can take the pages out so I can put different pages down on my desk to more easily compare/contrast their contents whereas in a bound system I'd constantly be 'flipping' between the two pages (this becomes almost impossible with three or more pages).

I had the same problem - Filofax now make spiral bound notebooks which have pages that can move just like a ring binder but that is much easier to write with (at least for me)

That was my issue, too, until I started using heavier paper and slitting the holes! Then it acts more like discs, but easier to use (in my opinion). Now I can just pull out the page and pop it back in without opening and shutting the rings every time!

That’s why I like plotters and similar. Because they have small rings so it’s easy to write in and the rings don’t get in the way. I found 23mm and smaller work but I love 20mm and smaller. And if you like tomoe River paper you can use it on rings and it’s not bulky.

as far as archiving in rings…when i am done with my pages i just place the old ones in loose rings. i add a cardstock cover or you could cut down the stalogy cover, hole punch it, and use that. i use the muji a6 covers which are a black cardstock that are the perfect thickness. i have a white label on the front that i have stamped with the begin and end date. that is the least expensive option that i have found thus far but that is me using what i already have. i imagine using a decorative string could work in place of the loose rings too. rings are archivable but it just takes some experimenting. bullet journaling in rings is such a good way to go about it because of the lack of pressure when it comes to the pages. i do a mix of bullet journaling, commonplacing, and printed layouts. i like that i can come to my rings and check in and out quickly because of the printed layouts and also take my time with my bullet/common pages. it is the best mix of all worlds!

Thanks so much for sharing! A self-drawn planner/BuJo in rings is the only way in which I can imagine using rings as well. I’m essentially a bound book planner kind of person, so I believe rings could only work for me if I recreated that exact system - without any dividers and decorative stuff ring planner people seem to enjoy having in their binders.

I have an a5 binder and I like it! I don’t use it as a planner, but as a commonplace. I just got my a6 rings this week to experiment with. Edit to add: I love rings because I can cut out the pages of notebooks I haven’t used or have partially used and reuse it! That’s what you did with your Stalogy! Nice to see that. I cut up an a5 Stalogy too.

I’m in rings right now as well. Sometimes the rings really annoy me but my biggest issues is I find that I don’t tend to log my day like I do in my Bujo. My planning feels disjointed and it doesn’t flow like my bound books BUT…. Damnit I will finish what I started 😂 I will say there is freedom in being able to just throw pages away. I have cut up a few Apica notebooks and it makes for great ring paper. Love your videos 😊

I get that! I find the rings feels very productivity/planning focused for me, definitely not a journal/achive kind of feeling (which is why I keep that in my other books)

I’m primarily a ring planner user. My favourite is the Filofax Malden, but I don’t think that would suit you. Filofax do make 15 and 11cm ring binders, the Lyndhurst and the Heritage are two I’ve really liked, and I’ve used a Kensington slim as a credit card storage binder for about 20 odd years now - you can still get them second hand. It is lovely to see a resurgence of ring planners - and this time around folks seems to really be thinking about the functionality of rings ❤

At some point, I wanted to only use clear PVC binders for planning in rings!! So I can just archive it as it is when it was full and then get a brand new binder!! I think the idea of having an expensive full leather binder that I would constantly refill (and having the problem of how to archive also) was putting me very off!! Is ring binders a trend ?? I don't think it is!! There are people on the planning community of youtube who have been religiously using ring planners for years now so I don't consider it a trend at all... I think... Also regarding journaling, a few years ago, I remember watching all these Korean youtube channels that were using exclusively ring planners for journaling/deco! (called dakku I think). It was very interesting to see that in that part of the world, they tended to deco journal like this. And they would archive the whole binder and get a new one for the next journal! Now the trend there is bound books btw lol.... (and the Korean planners btw are super creative in the layouts, I must say!) And, as I see from Japanese planning/journaling channels, in Japan apparently they mostly use ring planners for planning!!!! Not bound books that much! And brands like hobonichi they use them to journal in it. So, there's that! They call it "system techo" if you want to search for it translate the words on google translate and put them into youtube search bar! Having said all this... I am also in the mood to try a ring binder this time around. It's been a while since my last setup, I like changing planner systems/journaling systems frequently but I've never been in rings for too long I must say....
@KaitlinGrey
@KaitlinGrey 3 месяца назад
Very true! I feel like folks have been consider rings a trend in the planner community but that might not be the case (more a function of the people they follow and the content they see or a regional exclusive situation)

from A5 bujo for 5 years, i switched to passport TN this year and have been using it how i`ve used my bujo for the past years. memory keeping, trackers and journal. THEN mid February, i decided to use a Pocket Ring as my EDC. why? First, i can be careless (not that i don't care, but I can't stand a scratch on my passport TN haha) second, i can weed out my high level tasks and things that I only wanted to "archive" and include on my memory keeping on my Daily Log (which is on my TN) all my used ring inserts i can just scrap out. Finally, to end the craving of having both - TN inserts and ring inserts. to end the feeling "in between" haha

I have a couple! 1. Write is case (ie all caps) it’s easier to make your letters look uniform bc they’re all the same height and 2. Find a pen thickness that makes your writing look best (for me this is a thicker 0.5mm pen)

I dont like rings because i dont wanna archive them, I just feel like throwing in the trash. Even if I like them I just cant keep them for some mental reason. I even think maybe take them to somewhere that can turn them into one notebook, Maybe I would feel better.

Aw man, I literally just moved out of rings last night and now this is making me remember why I like them... 😂 my favorite thing about having a small ring binder like Plotter is every page has its purpose because you can't really fit extra stuff in there. Once I upsized to 25mm rings it became much more overwhelming to deal with. Too many pages, too little I actually wanted or needed. Yet I had outgrown the 11mm rings so I couldn't go backwards again... anyways I'm back in hobonichi. 😂
@KaitlinGrey
@KaitlinGrey 4 месяца назад
hahaha oh no!!! lol I have the same concern with 11mm rings, they seem v v small
@almalauha

Thanks for sharing! I think my smallest is 23 mm inner diameter rings, my largest organisers are 30 mm. I wish they made a Personal 35 mm inner diameter mechanism as I'd be using that for my daily organiser. I am currently using a 30 mm Personal for my diary/daily organiser, I made it myself as a trade up from a 23 mm Personal as I found the latter too small. How do you find the 15 mm rings? For archiving, I am doing the same as some commenters: I got hinged rings, the ones that come as individual rings. I am using one ring each in the inner two holes of my Personal inserts that I am archiving. It's not ideal but it's cheap. I've found clear PVC rings binders (6 rings) on eBay but not yet bought any. They are much cheaper than a proper organiser, they are actually cheaper sometimes than just buying a ring mechanism only. I might give that a go.
@KaitlinGrey
@KaitlinGrey 4 месяца назад
Nice! I’m curious about the slightly larger (23mm) rings, so far the 15mm are good but I dont have all the pages I’d want in this binder setup yet so curious to see how well they fit once I have everything in here that I want!

You make it sound so easy. Now I want to change back. I think you need to make it very simpel and then you can expand. For archiving you can get these book binder rings. Click them in and you are good to go. If you want you can even use cardboard as a front and back cover. So I switch back now to my Filofax and then try basics like future some trackers monthly weekly and daily. And if I miss something I will add.
