Testing out Survival Fishing Hooks/Do They Work?

Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.

great video. i just want to add that besides the pin hook, the other two really were primitive hooks used long ago and took a certain skill and finesse to make and use properly.

Brendan, this was a great video. I give you an A+ for doing all 3 hooks and making them yourself. The gorge hook is probably not really a catch and release hook dont you think? Have you ever learned about using horse hair fishing line and hooks tied on without eyelets in them? Very interesting as this was angling in the 17th and 18th century. There is even a store or two that sells on line, the authentic period correct tackle to do this. It would be fun to see you trying it.

Thanks for going primitive in this video. I always enjoy your videos but your idea in this one was too civilized. In a survival situation you don't worry about setting the hook, you want the fish to swallow it. There is no such thing as catch and release when trying to survive.

I really thought you wouldn't be able to catch any fish with that bone sharpened in both ends with the line on the center XD LOL!! Good experiment there bro lol

Ive used a paperclip before, and since they are easier to bend, than a pin, they were easier to modify for smaller or larger fish. I'd assume a bobby pin might work too, if you sharpen it a bit.

You guys should do a challenge where you use the survival fishing hooks

ok, the double sided hook or a gouge hook is not a catch and release hook. it's supposed to be thrown and then left so the fish swallows it. it's supposed to be gouged into the stomach not the throat or mouth(you're also supposed to stick it fully inside the bait so it can go in easier)

hey just a heads up the last one you used (Toggle looking one) it is supposed to lodge in the throat of the fish when they swallow its pretty cool you were able to use it to catch an release the fish relatively unharmed!

IMO The fish gorge hook is the best by far. Easiest to make. For bigger fish...make a bigger fish gorge.

fishing is not hard at all. i made a diy hook and got fish everytime. i didn't even set the hook as i only knew about that later. hook has to be sharp so it easily penetrates fish mouth easily
