I was invited out to Marshall Michigan to test to offroad capability of the New Eaton Cummins Endurant XD Pro 18 speed Automated Transmission in October. The crew at the Eaton Cummins Proving grounds loaded the dump truck up to 83,000 Lbs and the equipment trailer to 30,000 lbs for a combined weight of 113,000 lbs. Check out how it went.
How do I keep my long work days entertaining? I love listening to books. Here is the app that I use. amzn.to/3FG78gy

Dear you were acting just like a kid in a candy store lol 😆 🤣. You have such a lovely laugh and smile. I have only really driven an automatic once in my 40 years trucking. I drove it less than 500 miles and I think I cursed it every mile. I was wanting to shift gears because I was used to going by the sound of the motor and etc. Keep up the hard work and your love for trucking. Prayers for you and your family 👪.

My Dad drove Truck all his life and he didn’t mind the Auto’s too much when he got older. I bet he’d love the new Endurant XD Pro he’s driven every Tranny from a Spicer 6+4Aux, Allison, Eaton Fuller, and all types of Trucks…Even before they had Air Conditioning, then they brought out A/C units on the Roof of the Truck. I have a Picture of his Truck sitting outside of our place with the Big A/C unit on the Roof. I loved going with him hauling Cattle, Anhydrous Ammonia, Fertilizer, Over Size/Wide Loads. It was fun to go as a kid and it would be something new all the time depending on the seasons. I know “Truckers” don’t like newer Trucks, but he got to test out a 2019 Frightliner Cascadia in like I want to say 2014-5 or so for 6 Months then it went to another Company for 6 Months and so on, it was disguised as that years truck basically a nondescript White 2014-15 Freightliner Cascadia but inside you could definitely tell it wasn’t what it appeared to be. H&R Transport was the first Company then it went to the next. I always wanted to be a Truck Driver but my Dad said no way you are going to be a Truck Driver you don’t see your Kids growing up, etc, gone for long periods. Trucking is a lot different than it used to be, running 3 or 4 logbooks, the wild Wild West. 😂

I’ve driven that speed before in a manual on the high side. Some roads we paved, we might’ve had to back up for a couple miles due to few or nonexistent turnarounds. After a few times, it’s as easy to drive backwards that fast as it is to drive forward, lol

Reverse is just first gear going backwards. That's the cluster reverse runs off of. Unless you switch a power divider around, which I did early on as a mechanic and in that case the truck had 10 reverse gears, lol.

YES being so use to clutch. I train Fire Cadets. They cannot drive the engine. All are training Fire Engine have Allison push button transmission. I still like to push button control through the gears. On some of the old engines we had when I was a young Fire Explorer. The ( Maxim) Engines had an automatic transmission. It had two numbers on the shifter to lock out the higher gears ( 5-3 or 5-2) like that. I own and Restoring a 1971 SeaGrave with a 5 speed (8-71 Detroit) like driving it better than the automatic transmission Fire trucks. My 5 speed gets into 5th. Very fast.

Those Watson lift axles are famous for either catching something or as it did with you get all of that dirt, sand, or gravel all over it. I stopped spec’n trucks with them because of the low ground clearance. The Hendrickson lift axles have a little bit more ground clearance being that they don’t hang that low to the ground. My current truck has them and I don’t have the issues like I had with my previous truck.

My dump truck is a 2007 International with an Eaton 18 speed auto shift. It has it's advantages. I work for a county road dept so having an auto shifter helps when we do some of our stuff like gravelling shoulders. But it can also be a PITA. Here in western WA as you know we are pretty hilly. Sometimes the auto shift won't want to shift on a hill or sometimes it gets stuck in N. Happens quite a bit in the snow so we always plow in Manual mode.

But I keep telling him the autos are getting better and better every with every generation and advancement in technology Like driving in reverse 22mph , driving in very soft stuff with the drop axles up and down, fully loaded The industry has recognized you from your videos by your experience and it shows even if it helps to get more women driving trucks out there By the way I have driven a tractor trailer combo hauling asphalt and was trained to drive a manual in school so I still know how to drive one with a manual. Hey Dauminique that was a really nice invite that you, Bobby got to experience, glad they allowed you to film everything, now they'll probably want you to do some commercials/marketing campaigns for them. To help sell the next generation of Automatic transmissions. So now the next thing is they need to let you test it in the real world 🤔 ooooh say out in the PNW? I mean a controlled road course is nice and all but eventually someone has to be the 1st to put her through her paces Dauminique and it might aswell be you 🤷‍♀️, just think of all the videos that you can do? I told you before that you were going to be doing bigger things? An you said "Let me get a handle of this one 1st.." Dauminique I saw serious potential in you back when you started an knew that you were a natural at anything you put your mind to! I used manual mode on the steeper hills, because the alogorithum isn’t programmed for the mountains. Otherwise, it was a decent set up. Only issues I had was in very snowy slick roads on the passes. Damn ABS, engine,& transmission would argue with one another. Wheel would break loose, ABS event. Engine would derate, then power would come back, then trans would have to down shift. Then process would repeat until I was almost stopped. Kinda sucked in the mountains on very bad road conditions.

A great video and very good explanation of how the transmission works both from the inside view and the outside video Bobby was able to get in the off road part of the demonstration, it certainly showed the trucks ability to handle some very difficult situations and we all know dump trucks can find themselves in these types of environment. The transmission sounds similar to the i - select transmission that the European manufacturers have developed over recent years and from what I have read Scania lead the field at present with their range of engine transmission drive line combinations for their 540 - 770hp range of trucks and their use of a planetary drive for reverse which has saved 25kg in weight and shorter length. I do admit that these trucks are intended for highway use and the transmission only has 12 gears to work with. Now I have a question relating to the trucks configuration and although having 3 drop axles it does not have the swing down axle that the super dump you drove at Pelcow for a while had, is this an example of a truck allowed to operate in a different state as I remember you saying that Washington state had some very restricted load limits.

I looked into the Eaton Automated 18 speed about a year ago for a new KW Dump. From what I learned, I was definitely impressed. Especially if a new driver was considered. I think it would save clutches and driveshafts as well with new drivers. I haven’t driven one, but it seems the transmission acts like a conventional 18 manual. To me it’s way better than an Allison automatic. No way would I buy one of those. The Eaton trans is a definite possibility when I’m in the market. But, 22 mph in reverse is nuts! I’d have to lock out those top R gears.
@DauminiqueTheDumpTruckDriver
That was just R4, there are 2 more reverse gears above that.

Looks like they have improved a few things compared to the 18 speed eaton auto we have in our T880 Dumptruck here in Ontario Canada. I drove it for a year in 2021 when it was brand new and hated it . Wasn't bad on the hwy after they put a second mode in the transmission for hauling heavy since i pull a pup trailer but on site i absolutely hated it . This year the company i work for bought a another T880 with the good old eaton 18 speed manual and love it again ! 22 mph in reverse is something else though.. lol.
@DauminiqueTheDumpTruckDriver
I think it will go faster, I was too much of a wimp to try it.

Kudos to you Daum for using your turn signals on a closed course. I actually unsubscribed from a trucker who was proclaiming himself a Christian yet failed to follow basic traffic laws multiple times, including not always signaling when turning in low traffic areas.

I drove a first generation 18 autoshift and at least once a day it would have a rough shift that I thought would break the truck in half. Another thing is when I was about to go pull a grade and my rpm was up it would up shift out of no where and cause me to drop 3 or 4 gears.

Thanks for sharing your experience I really would not want an automatic I guess I'm old school. My old employer Melton Truck Lines have asked me to come back to drive and Nike I just can't do it especially with automatic transmissions I don't have control how's the truck it seems and I rather have full control how's the truck with Jake brakes and the 18 these are 15 ft or whatever the truck has to get me Boogie and down the road just my take.

Dauminique… good afternoon to you … didn’t you use the full locker (both rear axles locked up) when using that auto in that video above ? Does it have power in it ??? Which T880 do you like the best (the one you had with dump co /union position) or that one above ? … have a good weekend and I enjoy watching your video as I live in Puyallup, Washington myself
@DauminiqueTheDumpTruckDriver
This one is much better than the Alison that was in the previous T880's I drove.
