... in which I take to the streets with a telephoto lens to see if I can capture some people without coming across as a perv. The Nikon AFD 180mm f/2.8 ED IF for their F mount s a beautiful piece of glass from the 1990s - one of a cluster of high quality Nikon 180mm lenses, that manage to create that perfect balance between crunchy and soft and even with a bit of 3D pop to sprinkle on your breakfast cereal. But does that make it a good walkabout lens on the streets? And if I use one either at my local beach or the busy metropolis of Tokyo can I do so without appearing like a coward... or a creep!?
Camera: Nikon FE, Nikon F65
Lens: Nikon AF 180mm f/2.8 ED IF
Film: Harman Kentmere 100

Thanks for the video! I'm thinking to buy a used one for my D750

Thanks for watching. Works well on my D700 and I think the D750 has the screw drive built in so I'm sure it'll be great on that.

This self portrait at the café has so many Vivian Maier vibes. My favourite of the series. / I was recently doing some street photography with my [1982] Canon FD 85mm 1.8 lens. Not as long as your lens but in narrow old town of Bern it felt about the same. And ja, I don't like to frighten people as well.

I liked that photo too. I think part of the challenge is that I don’t want to just do candid close-up street portraits, so keeping back far enough to have some of the environment in the shot is part of the challenge.

Thanks for the support, Rob! 180mm is a bit hard to handle and I did notice a few of the shots were a bit soft so I need to keep my hand steady but there's definitely something fun about picking out moments on the street from a distance.

@@patternsinsand I think it's better because you get the full candid look of people without them conscience of being photographed, but still have enough room to get an idea of place. A 90 is good too. Film street photography is very challenging. You nailed it.

It's a fantastic lens, although I have never used mine for street photography. It's the only F-mount lens I have kept after switching to the Z-mount system.

Yes, it's still sharp enough but with plenty of character and comparatively small.

Thanks for the support. I guess sometimes doing something wrong produces something unexpectedly right.

I bought one of these in the AIS variety about 10 years ago attached to a really beat up and non-functioning f3 that was used as a photo journalist set up for years for basically free. It has fungus and some of the rear element coating is coming off but it still one of the best lenses I own. I've used it for a lot of landscape panoramas and portrait panoramas for that medium format look. Great video, keep up the good work.

Thanks. I hadn’t thought about photo stitching with this lens but that sounds an excellent way to achieve a very distinct look.

So serendipitous! I recently bought a 200mm 2.5 vintage Pentax for me camera and was just today walking around and giving it a whirl. Manual focus nearly 20 pounds in weight, It is a beast. But, (I don't like starting a sentence with the word 'but' however I am told it is acceptable.) the lense forces me to slow down and plant myself. Take some time and don't expect to collect snaps.I want to use it for much of the summer and fully expect to develop a fine example of a Popeye left arm. Can the Mrs. and I retire to Perth? I hear it's really inexpensive. We could take portraits of each other with our big lenses anonymously. We don't have to meet, we can be long lens comrades. The photos were exceptional. I really liked a photo you hadn't included, the one with the woman in white hair and the zebra like top. Tip of the hat to you, this was an excellent episode.

Thanks for the comment. You’re welcome to come to Perth. As for the cost of living, some things are inexpensive, some things aren’t. There’s a nation-wide housing shortage that’s putting up house and rental prices at the moment, but I like to keep reminding myself, things are still cheaper than Sydney!

@@patternsinsand I have been thinking about the big lens this week. I have been playing with it. There is an aspect to the lens that I am finding that is unique to the long lens. The distortion of reality. The compression of space where the foreground and the distantant focal point all shrink. The space compresses and those things in the far ground actually become larger than life. The space flattens out and distant elements bring themselves forward and impress themselves on the focal plane. Makes me think of old Japanese perspective prints. All this depends on the f stop but still, wow. I'm a child with a new toy. I have for many years used nothing larger than a 55mm and now have discovered a wonder. I imagine the rental prices are outrageous. Maybe you have a shed we could use?
@patternsinsand

@@ComblessMan Love that compression - it just brings order to distant land and cityscapes. If I were to get a shed, I'd be too tempted to turn it into a darkroom, despite it sweltering in the aussie summer.

if shooting color... that lens could make a Saul Leiter out of you.... looks like it could be a layering monster!
@patternsinsand

... making me realise, I don't think I've ever shot a role of colour film with it. I wish Kodachrome was still around.

Well we haven't heard Paul Simon sing about any other film. But...no kidding about Saul Leiter..hr shot with crappy color film marking real art.

Big beaming blue eyes, tightly packed noggin neurons, funny wit. Man if you were twenties I'd lock that down faster than a woman waiting in the first world war. I mean give it a few more years and it'd look like a a ww1 vet returning to a zombie, basically zombie on zombie action.

Not sure if that's a compliment or not but hey, I'll take it.
