While at the range yesterday, a friend of mine, who also follows your channel, and I were having a conversation about you and your channel. I remarked that you hadn’t posted anything in over a week and a half, but I was betting you have been squirrel hunting and working on Part 2. Before going to bed last night I checked for new content. Nothing there but early this morning there it was, just what I’d been waiting for. Great video with multiple points of content; you covered the ammo, the guns used, habitat, mast crop, and scouting for deer season, all in one. I voted for the 552, mainly because of your often demonstrated proficiency with the 581. Great job, as usual. I enjoyed a great day at the range with my friends who have the teenage daughters I have mentioned to you before. They had the day off from school and requested the range day. Very encouraging for these girls to have developed a love for shooting and excellent proficiency in marksmanship and gun safety. I had a blast zeroing two recent acquisitions, a fine Remington 513t and a 582. Both were lights out shooting Norma Tac 22. I picked up a 521t that should arrive today, hopefully. Anxious to try that one out as well.

That was a pretty close vote for sure. I hope you do a video on a complete teardown cleaning and inspection of your Remington 552 because I got a used 1973 Remington Speedmaster 552 22 coming in the mail and I want to make sure it’s assembled correctly, paying special attention to the bolt rubber buffer and how the retainer is orientated. I want to clean and inspect mine before I mount the scope and site it in. Thanks 😊

Always enjoy your squirrel hunting videos. Was at a local mountain top park with my girlfriend yesterday & white oak acorns & hickories were dropping like crazy. Cut some open to explain to her what wildlife eat & how indigenous people used them. At another location explained about beech nuts & to never try them when green lol. Great video. 👍🐿🙏

Something from shag bark hickory that goes real good with squirrel and biscuits. Shag Bark Hickory Syrup Recipe Start by collecting the bark. Break off sections that are loose from the tree to avoid damage. Using a stiff brush, scrub the bark well under running water. Make sure you remove any insects, dirt, or bits of lichen that might have made it past your first inspection. Pat the bark dry with a clean dish towel. Spread the clean bark onto a baking sheet. Heat your oven to 325 degrees and roast the bark for 25-30 minutes until it takes on a toasty brown color and you can smell the spicy aroma. Remove the bark from the oven and allow to cool. Place the roasted bark in a large pot. Cover with cold water, we used about a gallon. Over medium-high heat, bring the water to a light boil, then reduce the heat and simmer the bark for 30 minutes. Remove the pot from heat and allow it to cool Remove the bark (discard or save to add to the coals the next time you grill) and filter the water through cheesecloth to remove any bits of bark that might be leftover. Measure the amount of hickory tea left from the process. Measure 80% by volume in cane sugar. Add enough corn syrup to the sugar to equal the volume of water. If desired, you can use pure can sugar and eliminate the corn syrup, but the syrup acts as insurance to keep the finished syrup from crystalizing in the refrigerator. If your syrup does crystalize over time, simply heat the jar in a pan of warm water. Heat the hickory water to a boil, then add the sugar and syrup blend. Stir well to dissolve every crystal of sugar. This is important, even a few sugar crystals left undissolved can make your finished syrup crystalize over time. Continue boiling the mixture until the syrup thickens, about 225 degrees Fahrenheit on a candy thermometer, and the total amount of liquid has reduced by 25-30%. Sterilize canning jars (half-pint or pint) by placing a wire rack in the bottom of a large pot. Place the jars upright on the wire rack and fill with hot water to an inch above the jar level. Bring to a boil and continue boiling for 10 minutes. In a separate pot, cover clean rings and new canning lids with water and bring to a light simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes and remove from heat. Transfer the sterilized jars, turned upside down, along with the lids and rings to a clean wire rack to dry. Pour the hot syrup into the sterilized jars to ½” of the top. Place a jar lid on top and secure with a ring. As the syrup cools, the lid should seal to the jar with an audible pop. After the syrup has cooled completely, remove the rings and check for a tight seal. The jars of syrup should be shelf stable for a year or more. Refrigerate any open or unsealed jars for up to several months. Use the hickory syrup anywhere you would use maple syrup. As a topping for pancakes, waffles, hot biscuits, cornbread, as a glaze on meat, or add to your favorite cocktails for a sweet and smoky flavor you won’t find anywhere else.

I've got a squirrel call on a bellows, it's got a reed and an enclosed bellows. Very authentic sounding call. Wondering if you use anything similar? Wonder if you might also take some squirrel for population culling or do you generally always use for meat? Given the example of the squirrel that may have been infected with bot flies.
@CumberlandOutdoorsman
@CumberlandOutdoorsman 11 месяцев назад
I don't use a bellows call. I use the back of my throat to make the sound you heard in the video. I only take squirrels for meat, so the ones I harvest in the videos are cleaned, and cooked.

I’m quite sure this is not the scientific name but, all my life everyone I know called those pig nut hickories as as the shell is thin enough for hogs to crush and eat which they do.
@CumberlandOutdoorsman
@CumberlandOutdoorsman 11 месяцев назад
I did some research and I realized that I need to post another video in which I explain the different hickories in the area I hunt. The pignut hickory (Carya glabra) is a bit different than the mockernut hickory (Carya tomentosa), in that the fruit is generally smaller in the pignut, and the leaf has 5 leaflets, whereas the mockernut has 7 to 9 leaflets.
