Today I head out the Oak Ridge MX Motorcross facility in Garwin, IA for their Halloween five mile trail ride for 4x4s. While on the motorcross course it feels like you are driving on a roller coaster but some of the creek crossings ending up being more challenging than they first appeared. The drum brakes on the wrecker prove to inadequate and it takes a much larger machine to finish the recovery attempt I tried to make on a square body Chevy.

That old S10 Blazer, with the solid axle swop, was awesome 👍!! Kinda killed the look, with the donut 🍩 tire, on the spare tire rack though. 😉. 🙃

For the difficulty of some of the course I think it did well. Drum brakes can have their limits as you say Steve.👍👍

There is a Dodge M37 wrecker like yours in the movie "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World". Whenever I watch a video of this truck I always think of that movie.

@@ThisWeekWithCars Yes. And get out of the way when you make it UP an obstacle. That (K5 or big Bronco) truck that kind of stopped at the top, not quite out of the way on that mud pit followed by steep hill. I've never done anything like that, but I know some guys. I'm sure there's etiquette. I was especially wondering if you're trying to go up a hill and a guy's coming up from the other side. Yikes. Like those guys running sand dunes with the high flags. Looks like a free for all. Keep your eyes peeled. Good show.

Sand dunes are different because you can drive anywhere, no trees, but at places like this where there is a trail you are supposed to stay on the direction of travel is one way. If you want to go back to a location you have to go all the way back around.

😦. Holy poop!! 💩. That was scary!! The part where the Power Wagon stalled out, at the top of the hill climb, and the old Dodge was coasted back down the hill, I thought 😖 the old power wagon was going to have that JK for lunch!! 🥪. 😬

Steve, enjoyed watching coarse. The wrecker truck is a diamond in the rough. I like the chain noise, didn't bother me lol.

Bigger spaces between treads mean they clean the mud out of them easier instead of becoming slicks.

No, from 8:39 to 08:59. I showed that 20 seconds clip to my gf (who doesn't care about cars) and she was amazed and it made her happy -> perfect format for 'RU-vid shorts'.

Use 2nd low if you fail you have one left.Diesels the go non turbo.Great for steps petrol good in sand though.

The design of the brakes on that should give equal stopping force in both forward and reverse. Both shoes pivot from the bottom so they are not single leading like the fj40. The biggest issue with drum brakes is locking with too much force and then overheating and fade which can also happen with disc brakes. There are disc conversions for that truck but then you get to redo the master and add some kind of vac. assist to deal with the extra force needed to run the disc brakes.

costs and arm and a leg and you need to send your hubs out for machining to make it work. Best upgrade from the get to is a dual circuit master cylinder if keeping the drums. As built if you lose a brake hose or pop a line, you lose the whole system and have a three ton truck with no brakes or power steering self identifying as the Killdozer.
