Stating the obvious: You cannot judge the HDR performance of this screen based on the b-roll shots in this video. I'd need an HDR camera, and you'd need a similar HDR monitor at least. There is just no way of truly showing you what 1600+ nits looks like in a RU-vid video.

This is one hell of a monitor for creatives. But equally amazing for people that want to consume content the way it was meant to be seen. Only downside (aside from price, which will go down at some point) is that it has no +100Hz refresh rate, but if I'm not mistaken, Asus already has something similar in the works. Plus, since they started the whole ProArt thingie, I can only see more and more products like these coming out. It's a nice "era" that's popping up at them (30 Years edition) but also at other companies, now that the focus is all of the sudden on Creators. I'd be curious to see a comparison of this and the Apple monitor (stand not included, lol) at some point. That one had a 5 or 6K panel - can't remember the exact details now. Plus they'll add some "secret sauce" for the sake of the mark-up. However, I keep having these thoughts - do casual buyers and professionals (working for a company/corporation not themselves) even care about other brands than Apple/Dell? The YT comments section and other techie forums are such big outliers when you scale it to what the masses think. I always take my time to inform myself about the tech products I buy. Curious as to how this will evolve. Btw, good review - but you knew that before and congrats on being the first (?)!

Mini led is also FALD by definition as long as each zone (now 1000s as opposed to 100s) are independently controllable.
@camelCased
@camelCased 4 года назад
FALD (Full Array Local Dimming) - it's a gimmick if it is not per-pixel. How can they call it *full* array without actually having *full* array of pixel lights? Maybe so that later on they can release real per-pixel dimming and call it TrueFALD, SuperFALD etc., making it more confusing for customers?
@SkeleCrafteronYT
@SkeleCrafteronYT 4 года назад
@@camelCased It is Full Array though. It is an array which covers the whole panel, it's just not the same resolution as the panel itself. Anyway it is still miles better than edge lit and static backlight technologies! MiniLED is a form of FALD, she said it herself. There are 1152 zones, which is better than before. If you want 1:1 "FALD" then you'll have to be waiting for MicroLED in that case. In a way I guess OLED could be considered FALD even though there is no backlight since it is the pixel itself which emits light.

Miniled is a stop-gap between MicroLED and accounting for a few use-cases where OLED may not be compatible with or within the target audience's user preferences. This is the first high-zone MiniLED monitor, beyond $100,000+ MiniLED TVs & select reference monitors, that's worth pursuing vs an OLED panel.

Nice review! I own an ASUS ProArt 32" and love it. Instead of waiting for a monitor like the new PA32UCX that most can afford here's an alternative. 4 months ago, I choose to purchase a SONY 49" 900F 4K TV, that supports HLG, HDR10 & Dolby Vision. It's backlit and produces over 1000 nits. I bought it on sale for $800 US and use it as my reference monitor wall mounted above my desk and it was the best thing I ever did. It was quite easy to calibrate both color & brightness but when finally seeing HLG from my GH5 on it took my breath away. I looked at OLED which do produce better blacks but I here that many are having issues with screen burn using them with a workstation.

Hi, thanks for the amazing review. The best I've seen so far. I've been looking into buying this monitor since it was released. Today I've noticed there is a ProArt Display PA32UCG which is 1600 nits instead of 1200, it was a bit hard to compare in the Asus page sin the features on either monitor are not aligned and was wondering if you knew the difference with these besides the peak brightness. Thanks a lot, kind regards from Lima - Perú
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 5 лет назад
I've only seen the new 1600 nits model at an event and there you can't really judge the difference. It does have 1600 nits spec, and has the new HDR1400 cert as well as 120Hz VRR. I don't know how much brighter it will actually be considering this one is already on / close to that level, but the speed/VRR might be worth it for game devs and such. I don't know if there are other differences yet. No details as to availability or price unfortunately either, but I hope to test it when it launches!

@@TechTesters Its probably fair to say in all honesty people get hung up on nits and "needing to have" enough of them and it proves how little experience people still have with HDR. 1500 nits on a white screen is going to cause severe fatigue at the least, maybe even worse, especially if the whites are calibrated too cool (or lean too blue like so many amateurs seem to prefer), especially in a dark or dim room. I for one prefer low light for viewing so this is wasted on me. I also think 120cdm2 for 6500k whites is plenty bright enough in such conditions. Hell this thing can do 600 nits on SDR which is really seriously bright when many a monitor or yore maxed out around 350cdm2 which itself is very bright. The point is brightness is not the be all and end all for an enjoyable, non fatiguing viewing experience. Accurate colours are achievable with lower light and the human eye is not able to resolve and enjoy fine black and above detail while sharing 1500 nits areas at the same time. I admit it is still useful in a very bright room but turning it down by 75% is going to be important when sat two feet away at a desk in my own environment. For me the more important feature is the black and just above black details and the colour accuracy NOT the insane brightness levels that many think is more important. Thats where this monitor really does take my fancy. Id still much prefer a True RGB oled screen as the per pixel control still beats this lcd with more backlights tech (sorry miniLED). Oled grey to grey response is 5 times as fast if not more which in dark/light transition camera pans is very noticeable. For half the cost of this monitor one can soon buy an LG CX48 inch oled (okay not True RGB but damn close) which will have gsync 120hz, a TV built in, 48 inch size but sadly some risk of burn in. This monitor with true RGB oled and gsync for £1500 should be achievqble now but they keep milkong the top 5% of suckers for overpriced led lcd tech. That 2200 contrast ratio with SDR is certainly very low compared to some old VA panels for instance. Roll on cheaper miniLED which is at least a good step in the right direction as this video shows 👍

Good afternoon, I'm a video editor from Italy, so sorry in advance for my English . I really have appreciated your review about ASUS PA32UCX-K and I've bought one. It looks great and it has by far the best performances I've ever experienced on a monitors, but. The asus color calibration testing report included in the box says that the deltaE value is less than 2. How is it possible? What was the deltaE value written in the color calibration testing report of the one you tested? Thank you in advance.
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 4 года назад
Hey. Like many manufacturers ASUS calibrates high-end panels in the factory so they deliver with a certain (low) DeltaE score out of the box. What they don't say (almost no brand does) is if they calibrate each individual panel, or what they usually do with cheaper models: only calibrate a couple of units per batch as most panels in the same batch will perform similarly. So many monitors come with a piece of paper that says how they are calibrated. Personally I just ignore the paper and test/calibrate it myself. If you -really- care about calibration (like you, as an editor), you will have to calibrate yourself sometimes anyway.

150dB My husband sneezing LOL! Nice honest review.BTW: on site calibration is still needed to take environmental light into account. About the capturing of HDR with your camera: a contrast ratio of 80.000 is a bit over 16 stops of dynamic range. With a modern full frame Sony sensor you can get within 1.5 stops of that. So if you expose for the brightest parts, the darkest parts will not be as black as the monitor. The problem is: most of the viewer's monitors can not show that dynamic range.

Yeah, the stand is half-attempted to be sturdy because most will opt for VESA mounting it. It's even why the Apple Pro Display XDR opted to just not consider the stand as something to include thoughtfully before their unthoughtful $1000 price for the stand. Not sure why that's not done more often TBH; it'd be great to save a couple of buicks for something most won't need once the monitor is geared towards creative professionals / prosumers.

TCL series 8 TVs are going to be using mini LED and releasing soon. Obviously not playing in the same ballpark as this monitor bit just interesting to see where the tech is being used. And that TV will be cheap in comparison at 55 and 65". Really, this is just a natural evolution of LED LCD. We finally started to move into. A world where we had FALD, increased number of FALD zones, and now we need to shrink the LEDs to further increased the zones. And eventually we will get to LED sizes so close to pixel level that they'll be practically OLED. The real trick will be the software algorithm side though.

Does this have active cooling, i.e. a fan inside? My concern is this is Asus, so if something goes wrong and the monitor develops a fault outside of its warranty period, don't expect any decent after-sales support. Pricing is also too high for what it is. You'll get a more impressive HDR experience out of a Panasonic HZ2000 OLED with spot-on colour accuracy. I suppose the smaller size is useful for content creators who'll be looking at the screen from a closer distance.

1:16 to much is right, unfortunately for customers in the United States $4000 is actually the price, but if you import it from Amazon.nl you can save almost $800 and get FREE SHIPPING, I CANNOT thank you enough for pointing out the price discrepancy that was incredibly helpful advice

Wait it's cheaper for you to import it from the EU? O.o That almost never happens, usually we complain here that we pay considerably more (accounting for taxes)

Is it that much different than a standard monitor that its worth paying 2700 dollars on clearance for? I have astigmatism, and as an artist, the high HD either doesnt look much different

Thank you for the review, this is the most interesting monitor on the market and while expensive it shows the way forward. For 3000€ I will have to shortlist it because I have been looking for replacement for my Samsung S32D850. Probably still bit stiff for my wallet but still very Impressive.

How do you calibrate uniformity to be better? You can program the brightness of each zone in this monitor? No monitor I've ever seen can have poor native uniformity fixed by user calibration. Some have a pre-calibrated uniformity compensation mode that can be toggled on, but you can't affect it yourself.

Is the new tech close to or better than oled? I'm using a few years old LG E7 oled TV as a monitor right now. Great video as always.
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 5 лет назад
It's.. complicated? I have a C7 too (same panel as the E7) and it's a really nice TV to look at. However as a monitor, to work on? OLED has downsides too.: OLED doesn't go as bright, especially in larger zones, and the matte finish is easier to work with imho. Like I said in the video: to consume content OLED is great, but developers of HDR games / movies won't enjoy working on an OLED TV I'm sure.

Every mainstream HDR monitor should have Dolby Vision, HLG, & HDR10 (HDR10+) to properly consume home HDR content optimally and render HDR as the creatives intended (beyond maybe Technicolor HDR). For gaming associated with this monitor, most enthusiasts will be waiting for the ASUS ProArt PA32UCG w/ 4K@120hz, HDMI 2.1 VRR, & so on beyond more modern OLED panels coming in 2020+ thanks to Samsung big OLED investment (QD-OLED) & LG's new plant accelerated by next gen consoles * HDCP 2.3

Still, current FALD with miniLED implementations seem like cheating. Also, quality control and customer support of Asus has been ... weird lately. Sooooo.... waiting for microLED.

Great review and it’s a great monitor but in Australia, it costs $4,400, not sure I want to spend that much on a 34 inch screen when you can get a darn good Huge tv for similar cost.

a 55" OLED TV costs about half as much here in the EU. Apples and oranges though.

@TechTesters

My pleasure :) I did not look at the input lag specifically. I didn't notice anything significant when gaming on it, but if there was a tiny bit of input lag I might have been too busy to stare at the HDR-action to notice.

Apple XDR😳🧐🤫🤑 has left the chat, because the stand and vesa mount and matte finish , and cables, are all included for less than half the price, and the asus alone has Dolby Vision, and in independent test, has a higher peak brightness.🤯🤭🤒🙀🤮
