@rick what I meant to say when I was a kid we had a wood wall and it held to a neighborhood burglar. But it was a wood walled house so I do agree that it need to be wood and also the slide it’s self needed to be horizontal where the fat end would be closest to the edge of the door and you would not be able to slide it open.

Exactly. When lock picking lawyer did that one bike lock that took the steady hand of a surgeon to pick (and over five minutes) people were replying that the lock wouldn't stop anyone from putting it in a pickup truck or van. Uh...duh!! EVERY lock is susceptible to that type of theft! The point of the video is to remove lock picking from the equation! I am a first responder and I've had to kick in several doors. They are very easy to kick in. You can cause a Deadbolt to fail with 1 kick. I believe the reason you struggled was your moving frame. Also I can say definitively the size of the screws is what will save you. To make your door almost kickproof literally just put 3" screws through the metal Deadbolt latch

Yup, 3" deck screws and your deadbolt basically has to be ripped from your door before you'll get it open. Doorframe spreaders will still let it open easily, which are much harder to defend against. Usually that involves a steel bar that holds the sides of the frame and the door, which is a major pain all around and generally worthless unless you have bars on all your windows.
@knurlgnar24
@knurlgnar24 6 месяцев назад
A properly installed quality deadbolt isn't going to be kicked in easily. The plate it goes through should be heavy gauge steel and secured to the door frame with proper 3'' or greater wood screws. Most are installed poorly though. The door jamb is entirely useless for security - the framing is what offers security.

Funny story here: The second lock he reviewed is one that i have on my apartment door (aside from the chain that is originally on it). I installed this bad-boy and i must've forgot to tighten the screws down that were on the catcher so i left the house and came back an hour later, opened the door and the catcher caught on the nob piece and i was essentially locked out of my own home. It was EXACTLY like this scenario in the video. It took me 45 minutes of kicking in the door (JUST LIKE TYLER WAS DOING) to FINALLY loosen the screws enough to where i could reach my hand in and pull the nob loose and out of the catcher. Its still a good lock though, IMO. Full disclosure: The screws that came in the package were NOT the long screws as shown here. They were tiny little screws

I worked in hospitality for years and I know the strength of those swing-bar locks. I actually use them on my own home. The thing with that particular lock is that if someone is trying to breach a door, it’s going to, A: Set off the security alarm. Or B: Wake me up and give me enough time to be on the other side of the door with a 9mm. I really enjoyed this video and the lesson I take away is that sometimes, the older methods are still the best methods. 😉

One of the things I noticed is that your door frame moved QUITE a bit when you were hitting it. That movement absorbed a lot of the impact. Most of these locking devices probably would have failed, sooner, if you had them on a proper door. However, most of these locking devices would, and should, be used in conjunction with the deadbolt and the knob lock. Final thing - this is why firefighters are not trained to kick doors in. They're trained to use haligans and other tools. Kicking doors in is a good way to screw your knees. Other than that, solid video.

The one you gave 10 stars for is common on hotel rooms. Thanks for doing this. Btw, the products that rely on the door to be latched and bolt thrown might have done better had you not held the door partially open/ unlatched. Sometimes these products are designed to work together with a locked door not by themselves. That’s just my opinion and your testing has definitely gave me some ideas. Thanks for sharing!

Do you think the white hinge type lock that you assumed would be stronger could’ve failed because either (1) the door was so far off from being flush with the frame that the lock didn’t fully engage or (2) there was excess space in between the frame and the door, placing too much torque on the far edge of the bumper as this would create a radial/circular force that almost mimics pulling the hinge out with your fingers? I can’t tell whether the latter is an issue from the view on the video. Just asking because i was leaning towards this lock the most before watching this video. Now not too sure

Nope, a couple kicks from a health, full sized adult male will rip the door frame apart if you kick AT the deadbolt area, unless one of two things are true: 1) The frame is metal 2) The striker plate spans a longer area and has much longer, thicker bolts going through past the frame into the wall stud or other material the wall is comprised of. Essentially, what he built was not designed with security in mind, though I concede that the average crackhead breaking into homes may not have the health or mental facility to effectively land a kick that hard.

Steel doorframe and door with a deadbolt is probably your best bet for security. I have significantly above average experience with kicking in doors and if either the frame or door are wood (with standard deadbolt) it wouldn't take me more than 2 kicks, if it did take me 2 I would end up laughing awkwardly between the first and second kick. Foot placement and correct weight shift are the most important things.
@SBDScott
@SBDScott 3 года назад
Ever wonder why the deadbolt is so long? It is supposed to go through the frame, and into the trim stud inside the wall. The metal bracket (if installed properly, prevents the frame/stud from splitting apart like that,) can also be installed on the stud during installation of the frame, making it even beefier, and allowing larger (within reason) screws to be used efficiently. Properly installed deadbolts are freaking hard to bypass with force. That is also an exterior door on a 6" frame. It should be installed in a 2x6 wall, making the deadbolt mounted in it even stronger. That is a 2x4 frame.

My apartment door came with the 2nd lock thing you tested installed, and it has helped me feel safe numerous times. I have anxiety and a bit of paranoia. Sometimes I get it in my head that someone is going to come in my apartment and kill me in my sleep. No good reason for the fear, tbh. I live in a pretty safe area. No crimes in this neighborhood in the three years I have lived here. And I am a man, so it's not like I feel afraid because I am weak or anything. It's just mental illness :) Anyway, I use the extra door lock thing whenever my brain convinces me I am in danger. This video of you struggling to break the door down with it on there makes me feel even better. And I know the one I have is even more heavy-duty (thicker, installed correctly) than the one you tested. Could you also test window locks? My apartment is on the second floor, but I still get paranoid that someone is looking up into my apartment from below and that if they see me they will grab a ladder and climb up in here to bypass the door. To anyone who is alarmed - yes, I am being treated for my mental illness. Knowing something is irrational doesn't make it seem any less real, in the moment. Once I get into that panicky hyper-vigilant state of mind, not even Superman could convince me the threat isn't real. I am not a danger to myself or others, at this point in time.
@Sparkles._.

Honestly I thought I was crazy for this. My dad has always told me if you're gonna lock one lock make it the dead bolt but be smart and lock both. I get up and check my locks 2 3 times a night because I'm convinced someone will break in and kill me and my boyfriend when we sleep. I have the second lock he tested and like you said it made me feel better watching him struggle to get in. I live in a safe and gated community when we house sit (7 or 8 months out of the year) and so I shouldn't worry but I watch enough crime shows to know better. My boyfriend tells me I'm paranoid but growing up in a neighborhood where we've been broken into twice and had many robbers in it I don't take chances even though that wasn't a safe neighborhood. He complains that he gets locked out of the house because I forget to unlock the door but I tell him do you want me dead or do you want me locked out of the house. That changes his mind fast. I use locks more as a delay so the can't just walk in and I'm a light sleeper most nights so a creak in the house settling wakes me up fast. So I sure as hell will here a sledge hammer bang through the door. But trust me you're not alone it's safe to be paranoid it just means you're aware of danger and wanna stop it

I work in a hotel that has those U-type locks. There has been instances where we've had to breach the door. There's a few ways to open them. 1. Use a credit card/ drivers license/ or the hotel key card to slide it in the door frame pushing the latch open. It takes practice to do this effectively. 2. Once the door is open you reach in with a pair of channel locks and grab and twist either the top or bottom "rung". This breaks it and moves it away. 3. Same as before. But once the door is open you use a good strong knife or the tip of an expandable baton and put it between the rungs. Then twist either up or down until it breaks and separates.

I’m super late to the party but one thing to consider is the lower the lock is mounted, the easier it’ll be to kick in because you’re not kicking the door towards the top but towards the bottom. I have just a few points to make on your video, the chain lock should not have riveted hardware for the latch, it also should be mounted horizontally not vertically so that when the door is pushed in it cannot reach the latch release point. The frame you used needed to be beefed up to reduce flex and twist such as a real door frame would react. Also the best lock for your door in my opinion is the nightlock door lock. It is very effective and quick and easy to install.

He spent 2 hours trying to get the door to swing smoothly just to test these locks and break it. Haha. I'd actually like to know his thought process on how and why he thought the hotel room door lock was gonna be easy. Cause honestly, I've always thought out of all of them that I've seen, that one seemed most secure. The other sturdy one I figured would eventually pop the hook out due to vibration (which it did the first time he retried with different screws). If the hook had a carabiner type end instead of a hook, I'd say that it would work great though. I feel like if an intruder was gonna go this far, they'd be quicker just breaking a window. Haha. I mean, your door can be as secure as you want it to be but windows are always a weak point when it comes to keeping yourself safe in terms of that cause lets be honest, criminals are already breaking the law, they aren't gonna care that they have to break your window to get what they want. This was cool to see tested out though because I've looked into these for a while for more home security. I'd say Tyler was probably pretty sore after this workout. Haha.

Easy fix for windows is a pair of thick solid wood shutters mounted inside. screw 2 pairs of iron brackets on the window frame 1/3 from the top and bottom on each side, using stout 4 inch screws, then slip two 2X4s into the brackets going across the entire width of the window into each pair of brackets. They can break the glass all they want, but they aren't getting in.
