Testing Vallejo Metal Color - The Acrylic Alternative To Solvent Based Metalizer Paints Like Alclad

In todays video I revisit Vallejo's Metal Color acrylic paints. For many hobbyist out there, an acrylic is their only option. While there isn't as many color options to choose from, what I have here is pretty good. It's also durable which is a plus. Another bonus is it has zero smell.. Another bonus is they seem to go on really well without a primer.
While in my opinion these are no where near as good as the solvent based metal colors like Alclad and AK Extreme, they are a good choice for the hobbyist who only uses acrylics.

hands down the BEST acrylic metallics. Period. I ditched the Scale75 line for these. The gold is a bit green but Vince Ventrulla mixes 3 drops Gold, 2 drops Copper and a bit of Green Stuff world Antique gold pigment powder and it is a game changer.

Get AK Interactive 3rd gen and if you want a ice gold try the green stuff world pure metal pigments that can be mixed with master medium or metal varnish. Also AK makes lots of acrylic metals, and wax metal paints that are almost like oils that somebody can polish. just saying. Citadel makes good paints too.

I absolutely love the Vallejo Metal Finish line. I used the Dark Aluminium and Aluminium on my NX-01 build. You really do need a gloss black primer like Alclad for best results. Also you don’t need their varnish I just clear coat with Tamiya TS-13 Gloss and it retains the metallic shine. You can even use a matte clear like Duplicolor wheel matte for a nice matte finish.

After doing a bit of testing myself, I'm beginning to think the trick with these metallics paints across the board isn't so much undercoating them with gloss black as much as it is having a glass smooth undercoat. If your undercoat is grainy or pebbly, it ruins the metallic look we crave. I've actually heard (not seen) guys undercoating simply with a clear gloss over primer with fantastic results. Same with gloss royal blue. It would be interesting to see the results of such a test. Unfortunately, I'm not currently in a position to try such a test.

Barbatos man you are really onto something by adding color to white aluminum. I bought some Vallejo Metal Medium and was extremely disappointed with the results. It’s basically just mixing Pearl White with your base color 1:1 and BARELY gives it a pearlescent look that is not really noticeable from afar. The Metal Color is just what i needed to make real metallics in different flavors. The results mixing with the White Aluminum were night and day better than their Metal Medium which is pure crap imo. Once again you point me in the right direction and the reason you are my Go-To guy for paint tips. 👍

I was really eager to see the primer because I have a bottle of that Vallejo gloss black primer and mine keeps looking more satin when I put it on. I can’t work out what I’m doing wrong, but I had not tried thinning it in the airbrush so I may try that to see if it makes a difference (and I definitely shook the bottle for ages and even used an electric paint stirer- no difference).

The gold and copper really need to be viewed as a pair to get a good looking gold. Tinting them with ink is a more flexible way of tinting them either for other metals or metal effects. They're loved in the figure painting sphere because they also brush in really nicely and can be brush blended to an extent.

I have a few of these and really like the for brush painting. If there is no clear coat on top, when I tried using mr weathering color and the it's respective solvent, it will eat through the metallics. They really need to have some sort of clear coat on top. Unless you're careful, it looks like a metallic with gloss coat on top.

With acrylic I guess the paint is less forgiving if you go ticker compared to solvent based like Alclad. I found that thin coats work best for Alclad but you do need a top coat. I'm curious if you could make a video about different kinds of thinner for both Acrylic and solvent paints. What dries quicker and doesn't affect the finish. I generally use IPA. It works with my Alclad and acrylics and it dries really fast after spraying.

I really like the Metal Color line, although so far I've only been able to get my hands on the Silver (77.124) and the Dark Aluminum (77.703) because all of my local gaming and/or hobby stores that care Vallejo seem to have a really hard time getting them and then sell out quick when they do. I've found they need no thinning at all in the airbrush, and actually brush on pretty well (at least on 25mm scale minis). But they do tend to look better over black or a darker color than they do grey or white. For the Surface Primer I go 2:1 with the thinner, but my thinner is actually a blend of 90% Thinner, 10% Flow Aid.

I tested the Chrome and Gunmetal over their Gloss Black Primer. Looks and feels great! But the Gloss Black Primer seems sticky even after dried (cured?) for 2 days, still a bit sticky. Dont know whether it is normal or what.

I've actually had some problems time to time with their Gloss black primer. Not sure why. You can try thinning it a bit more. That helped me. Also you don't need to use their primer, I use Alclad Gloss Black Base and Tamiya Gloss Black spray cans. Both work awesome with these. Keep me posted

@@barbatosrex9473 I have always thinned their products, Mecha primer, Surface primer, this Gloss Black primer, Mecha Color line, and thanks to you now, their Metal Colors line! My "Vallejo Ratio" is 2 Paint : 1 Thinner : 1 Flow Improver (I don't follow their instructions with 10:2 ratio). At least always works best for me, even with this ratio, tip drying still happened. But this specific Gloss Black Primer, I may need to try to thin it more than that :D thank you for your heads up. Are Alclad and Tamiya Lacquer? CMIIW. My current condition forbids me from using other than Acrylic. Thanks again for your reply. You just got a new Sub. Have fun and keep posting!

The range has recently been re jigged lately with a slightly different label and with a agitator ball in them so if you want to know which one give them a shake
@viper29ca
@viper29ca 2 года назад
Agitator ball has been in them for quite a few years, but yes, they have been reformulate recently due to a chemical they were using in them, that can no longer be used or obtained.

20:02 why don’t you try to use the Vallejo Metal Medium instead, and use transparent colors to mix, instead of opaque ones.

I bought some of these after seeing this video and they look great. the nozzle design is total garbage though. It would be better in just the typical dropper bottles.

0.55 mm. You can get 3 sizes for it, a small, medium and large. Believe it or not the 0.5 mm is the middle

@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks! I have an Iwata Neo and it has a .50mm (stock) needle. I found what you said about having a larger needle interesting for not having to thin the Valejjo colors so I was curious if I should try getting a larger needle then.

Not having an extractor system limits me to acrylics. I've found these Vallejo metallics to be pretty good but have had two pots of Aluminium go gunky weird It sort of curdles after a while. The gunmetal, steel, duraluminium have been fine

I was gonna say you should be doing the tape test with Gorilla Duct Tape, but that stuff will strip anything. If you stuck it to a block of uranium and pulled it off it would probably split the atoms and cause a nuclear explosion 🤣

You can use them as brush paints for smaller areas you want to cover. They are great for painting details on figures for example.
