For those wondering about the results from my muscle biopsy, it turns out I have the best mitochondria they’d ever seen - “mutant” even 👌😅 weird flex but I’ll take it 😂
That was a very informative video Chris and a great insight into your recovery and profession as an elite athlete. All the best for the closed season and more so for the 2023 season ahead you.
What made them good, Chris? How do they differ from the average rider? I'd be interested in what they were looking for and what metrics they use to measure high performing mitochondria.
I miss chris being a beast in the tour de france, when his bike failed and he run up the hill, And the giro stage 130km out and won the tour from Yates was mega This man was incredible at his best 🦁
Thank you Chris for letting us be a part of your life as you strive to get better. May God's glory shine on you that you will rise to the highest point ever in your career. I believe in you.
I really appreciate you giving us a glimpse into your training and recovery. I also appreciate the quality of the videos that you release. I look forward to seeing what level you can achieve in this upcoming season
They can say anything about Chris, but for me personally, after 80 km of separation and victory on the hardest mountain stage, he is one of the examples of unbending athletic will.
Great quiet day for a long ride! Ive done a stack of VO2max tests at uni/AIS and always found keeping fat intake under 10g a day for a week gave better read out. Dietary fat inhibits the uptake of oxygen in the blood. White rice, water and sugar for dinner. BEST feeling in the legs next day.
That brings back some memories... I used to do vO2 testing for the human biology lab when I was at university. SRM gear was used way back in 1994, except it was a regular "front wheel out" turbo trainer wired to a PC. There was a light sensor mounted on a stand from the chemistry lab that measured the rotational speed of the flywheel. One half painted black, the other white. The idea was to keep the line in the middle of the computer screen whilst the computer made is harder to keep the line in the middle of the screen... very simple and bloody agony. The face mask was connected to a series of huge bags on a shower rail. Looks like this version does the gas analysis directly in the mask. The students did the gas analysis after the session had ended along with the lactate blood tests. I remember telling mates in our cycling club I was getting my vO2 max assessed and almost everyone asked..."That's nice Andy, what's vO2 max and will you go faster in Sundays 25 mile?" It was quite an emerging topic at the time. I did this test every two weeks for a term! I was happy to help out the Biology department but respectfully declined their offer to repeat it the next year.
@@cyclecoachcyclecoachcom8071 Ah yes, you’re absolutely right, it was the Kingcycle. Thanks for jogging my memory. I remember a club mate was put on one in about 1991 at Lilleshall (less the bags)… it was just a max HR measure.
@@andywithers592 yes - that was a/the National Centre of Excellence at the time. Other than just HRmax it measured (what they termed) max-min power output (the highest minute power during the test). I term this MAP (maximal aerobic power), it's an extremely useful measure of performance
Congratulations for ALPE D'HUEZ You are back to your best level . I have always believed in you. You are very courageous. I expect you next at theTOUR DE FRANCE 2023
Chris, always an inspiration! Keep Believing, we are still going to see in a short period off time the "old" Chris Froome! Mega inspiration to all off us who love cycling!!! Thank you Sir, for sharing!
dude you should have been doing videos like this your whole career!!!! i never rooted AGAINST you as a rider. but i never connected with your personality that came through in interviews.. and therefor never really found myself routing FOR you either. as weird as that sounds. but through this channel/videos.. you seem f*cking awesome. down to earth. funny. you learn things you never expected, like your love for working on your own bike. humbling/interesting stuff like that. anyways lol.. keep making the vids
It is not that bad and you can learn a lot about how your muscles change. I think it is even more interesting for people that have not been training for ages. You can sometimes see drastic changes in fibre type distribution. Froomeys sample was rather small though. You often have a much larger needle or rather a cylinder that is inserted through an incision. Then a vacuum pump is used to pull the muscle into it and the sample is punched out, with a guillotine insert. It still heals rather quickly if there is no excessive bruising.
Phenomenal watching those vo2 efforts and you look like you've done a casual walk to the shop 😂It's amazing how fit you elite guys are. I'm still hopeful 2023 is your year Chris - you were looking strong until you caught covid.
Ah, I was a lab rat many times over 45 years ago, and I remember doing the muscle biopsy test. I certainly remember the numbers 40slow/40fast/20mid twitch, but of course it could have been a completely different test of the leg muscle but it certainly looked a lot like it.. I do remember my leg sore for a few days. I also remember cardiac output was 42 which most people never find out. They take blood out of you every few minutes for a half hour, while you are exercising and then they spin it. Of course MVO2 was something totally different. Under water weighing etc. as well. Thanks for the memories.
Chris Froome's 2022 Off-season V02 Max: @6:49, the computer screen shows CF's weight as 70.0kg. Bottom right on the screen shows 5048ml which is his maximal oxygen uptake as the time of the recording (Yom Kippur occurred on Oct 4-5 2022). 5048ml/70.0kg = 72.1 VO2 max, which CF confirms @7:04. 72.1kg is not his weight, 72.1 is his VO2 max at the time of the recording. Then CF asks, "What about at my race weight of 2 or 2.5kg lighter, which is my race weight? How much would it (my VO2 max) go up to then?" Answer is shown on the technician's phone @7:36: 75.3432836 = (5048ml / 67.0kg) Therefore, CF must have told the technician to enter 67kg in the calculation as his target racing weight in order to get that 'above 75' VO2 max.
Wonderful to see this experience from Israel and the Yom Kippur holiday. Very interesting to see the whole country just having a break and no cars on the road. Keep the videos coming.
My thoughts were heck no, at the size of the needles. It was great that Guy could show you around too. But you're ending was pretty funny. Thanks and good luck for next season.
Froomey is a legend. One of the greatest ever to turn the pedals. My first impression from this was during the 2013 Tour TT and Ventoux performance through to his 2018 80km raid, to take the Giro from Dumoulin and Yates; surely Chris's V02 was greater than 75ml/kg/min?
@@yannickokpara4861 @michael griffiths I'm reasonably certain that CF tested at 85 mL/kg/min at the GSK lab in the UK. If CF's VO2max is currently 72 mL/kg/min and his current mass is 72 kg then his absolute VO2max is 5.18 L/min. If we go with the GSK figure of 85 mL/kg/min and a mass of 69.5 kg then his absolute VO2max would need to be 5.9 L/min so CF would need to improve his (absolute) VO2max by ~14%. Obviously, there may be calibration differences between the two labs. And, motivation/fitness as I think the GSK test was done just sort of post TdF.
As we say in the ambulance service "small prick" before any injection. Now that was like a harpoon even in my practice standard . Brave man Mr froome 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Looking forward to your arrival in Singapore 🇸🇬 Hope you will have a day or two to enjoy the attractions and some local food before Saitama. Hope you can sign some jerseys for me too ☺️
Wout can outsprint the greatest sprinters, beat Ganna on TTs,climb with pure climbers etc. He is a phenomenal athlete.hope he wins Flanders, Roubaix, worlds and maybe Liege
Very much enjoy your videos Chris - thank you 🙂 One question about position on the bike - i wonder over the years have you experimented much with fore/aft position of your saddle? I’ve always ridden with it quite far forward as it feels like i can generate more power in that position but i know i am out of equilibrium carrying excess weight through my hands/shoulders/neck so i am trying to gradually move it back. What’s your experience with fore/aft saddle position? Perhaps you could do a vid on your position on the bike and how it has evolved? If you fancy 🙂 Cheers and i hope all is well, martin
Hey Chris! I would be a bit skeptical of the results from the testing, at least what was presented in the video. The power numbers seem to be a bit high and the VO2max measurement a bit low, especially compared to each other. Have a nice off-season!
@@philadams9254 I was more talking in relation to the power (watt) values they measured. They don't match up at all, plus the type of setup they used for the VO2max testing is know to underestimate VO2 measurements at the end of a ramp protocol when the ventilation and breathing rate gets high.
Did he say 72 was his VO2 max or his weight in kg? B/c 72 VO2 max seems on the low side of an elite athlete of his caliber, considering there are cross-country skiers in the 90's.
