I'd like to see her do it with a somewhat lighter blush, and a bit more restrained application, especially on the forehead. Underpainting can produce nice glow-from-within results, but what we saw today really did resemble a sunburn. The finish was lovely, but the color distracted (at least for me).

For over-50 makeup I am finding there is no blush too blushy, people would rather assume I'm drunk than decaying 😂 I'm just happy to be here! 😅

I'm annoyed as a long time oil painter at the use of the term "underpainting" in "techniques" like this. It has no resemblance to underpainting in execution or what it is meant to accomplish. You wouldn't underpaint in oils and then go right in with the next layer because, as you can see, the red is not dry so it just mixes into a solid pink so what have you achieved?! Girl just mix your blush and foundation on your palette and whack it on, if that's what you want don't be so roundabout and assign actually terminology that gives a false sense of legitimacy to it 😭 I can just see the TikTok generation eagerly raising their hand in art class when the teacher asks "does anyone know what 'underpainting' is?" 🥲

@@LunarEleven, I know it is an art technique, but use of "underpainting" to describe the makeup technique in which you put your foundation on after blush, contour, and concealer, goes back to at least to Kevin Aucoin in the 1990s. (I don't know if it goes back before then, because I didn't wear makeup before the mid '80s.) Robert has talked about it before, too. Because of the difference in medium and materials, of course the technique for oil paints would differ from the one for makeup on human skin. Mary Phillips (a professional makeup artist with celeb clients) sort of brought more attention back to it, and TikTok glommed onto it, but it is not new in makeup, either.

I saw Jamie French do under foundation contour, bronzer, and blush. It was a technique from one of her MUA texts. It looked great. Still crazy at first but the finish is flawless.
