Testosterone has long been seen as a metaphor for aggression, but is there really anything to the idea of the testosterone-driven male? Prominent scientists explain how subtle the hormone’s effects actually are.
Men with a lot of testosterone have long been accused of violent and competitive behavior. Now the image of the sex hormone is changing. Unlike in the animal world, the general statement "testosterone makes one aggressive" cannot be confirmed in humans, and recent studies suggest that it can actually even promote selfless behavior. One of the leading experts in this field is Jean-Claude Dreher from Lyon. He says his laboratory experiments show that testosterone does not make men aggressive but instead allows them to act in a strategic manner. Those who are more testosterone-charged tend to be friendlier towards others in order to bolster their own social status. British behavioral psychologist Simon Baron Cohen demonstrates how testosterone determines our gender characteristics when we are still in the womb. Meanwhile, his colleague Oliver Schultheiss from Erlangen has found out how testosterone can improve our learning abilities.

Ask any man who has naturally low testosterone, it’s a living hell. Depression, no ambition, no sexual desire. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

@Valerie O'Brien women also habe testosterone in their bodies, but at much lower level than men. Your arm strength may not necessarly be due to testosteron, it could for example be another genetic factor that gave you strong arms and legs.

@Valerie O'Brien "have beaten men in arm wrestling, when o was younger" You were stronger when u wer younger? Wat about now when u are older? Do you have the same strength? Just curious to know. The difference in strengths between men and women actually increases as they age. The males get more stronger than females as they age and the females get less stronger than the males as they age. This difference in strengths keep increasing upto a certain age (upto old age). If u are still stronger than males, u must be an extremely rear exception among women.

However I disagree with the idea of women as "soft", and that their main qualities being things like beauty, cooking skills, graciousness and so on. Since women have been gaining more voice in the last decades, we've learned that they want to have ambitions and be seen as more than family assets and a kind of servant to their partner. But I think you were just trying to portray women as valuable, in a somewhat old fashioned rather than degrading way.

omg, my story is exactly like the young guy in the beginning. But this starting happening in my 30s, for some I reason i just wasn’t feeling right, year over year, i slowly started to lose muscle mass, low mood, anxiety increased, night sweats so bad I thought I wet the bed, brain fog and zero motivation. This didn’t seem to me to be normal aging, but I had no idea what the heck was going until in my late 30s when it all manifested itself as extreme insomnia, full blown depression and anxiety. It was like I had a nervous breakdown but yet there was no trigger, nothing in my life was going on that that would cause it. Doctors thought i had depression or anxiety and was giving me all sort of pills for sleeping, the depression etc. But i kept telling them, there is something else going on, this isn’t normal for me. Then when I mentioned to my doctor I have been feeling kind of disconnected downstairs so to speak she immediately had a full hormone panel drawn. After suffering for so long, I finally had some kind of answer, my testosterone level came in at 234ng/dL. Second draw came in at 168ng/dL. After ruling out any tumors in my pituitary with an MRI, my endo started me on testosterone injections right away. The conclusion was the same, for some reason my HPTA was not sending enough signal for testosterone production and they have no idea why. Whatever the cause the treatment is the same. Within weeks and over the months and now couple of years, I have completely transformed. It’s like god himself raised me from the dead, all these odd symptoms I had had over the years completely went away. Not only do I feel like a normal person, I feel like I have reversed my age by atleast 10 years. It’s amazing how you feel with proper testosterone levels, I keep mine in the upper normal range right around 850ng/dL and feel pretty amazing.

@endeavorwebs719
@endeavorwebs719 5 лет назад
I am not sure about that, it is not conclusive. What i can tell you is the type of exercise and how physically active the person is, that is a key, today modern men in developed countries are less active with their legs, walking and lifting heavy weights. Leg work promotes testosterone production, sedentary individuals tend to lose a lot of testosterone production. Too much exercise can be negative, i think a balance is needed. The problem is that everything today is artificial, guys are eating gmo proteins and steroids, so nothing is what it seems really. Artificial methods deflate our own body testosterone production, so bigger no healthier. But exercise is key imo, a good balance is a must.

Anger has little to do with Testosterone, but Cortisol resorption. Sure, Testosterone can make you more motivated and driven. This can be good or bad depending on your personality traits, like Narcissism or Psychopathy, driven by blunted dopamine responses, driven by certain genotypes of DRD4 dopamine receptor genes. 93% of all violent prisoners in prison have the DRD4 genotype. Mixed with COMT the warrior gene, it can lead to extreme violence, or controlled violence, depending on brain structure and upbringing.

We tell our sons to 'suck it up ' - don't be a sissy - and so much worse when they are but toddlers the conditioning begins... We give our daughters dolls and babies from birth, our sons get guns and tools of destruction... We teach znd mold our daughters, condition them for their place in society - yet our sons are allowed to roam freely as 'boys will be boys ' and magically at 21 are expected to be men often with no instruction or a father to teach him.... I think women can do so much better by their sons than we have been. I think its truly our fault men are often unable to deal with complex emotions at high stress times such as divorce - we women never gave them the tools to deal with them... My experience with testosterone is it makes you more confident. I realized this when i suddenly found it easier to turn down sellers on the phone or people just asking for my charity. I knew my levels were low but i didn`t realize in wich degree it affected me. I am earlier diagnosed with Dysthymia, a mild chronical depression. My entire life has consisted of a complete lack of any goal or ambition. No drive whatsoever. Shit. I realize i don`t care enough about sex to try and do anything about it. I do have it, but i am usually alone. Guess i`ll start treatment again. Nothing to be ashamed of. Just the way it is. Stay testy.

The true gender traits that men and women search in one another and makes them genetically able to live together and work together as a couple or family unit? Women want to be in their feminine, a woman wants a gentle leader that gives the best of himself each day without talking about yesterday. A leader that does not tell her what to do, but goes first, or leads by example. A man that's a rock that does not match his opinion to hers. A man who can stand up for himself, so he can stand up for her. A guy she can't have her way with. A dude that can listen ans ask questions until he understands and does not argue or give unsolicited advice whilst listening to her. That's the divine masculinity. The thing women test when they look straight into your eyes when smiling, to see if you look away first, to test your masculinity, over and over, so she knows she's safe and can open herself emotionally and physically. How you deal with adversity all comes down to coping mechanisms. Societies with good coping mechanisms thrive, societies with poor coping mechanisms see much more violence. People have hard time even just accepting variables in their lives as they are. We have little control over external variables but we 100% control how we view & process the external. There is ALWAYS death, disease, apathy, and destruction. There is also ALWAYS love, happiness, hope, and kindness. What you see is merely a reflection of your internal world. I hope someone gets to read this. This is basically a reply to comments where I'm seeing some arguments (or something) about western culture, feminism and other things like that not a response to this post per se. In my opinion, none of us are listening to each other. Wouldn't it be great if we all listen, man or woman, knowing that rightness and wrongness don't belong to a gender. Evil has no gender either. I am a woman, and I know that there's been generational oppression that women are acting out now. What should be men's protective nature has wounded some of us, our mothers were controlled, slaves to people who are their lovers, sometimes beaten and our daughters were sold as pricy properties, check history. Where I am, I've had to push really had to take away this 'I am a property mindset.' It legit messes up with a woman's mind. In lots of African cultures, a woman is only whole and valid, if she is married. If not, she's her father's. Till someone comes get her. But men have their own grievances too, some men have worked out their asses for their families, and have been treated badly by their wives. Some men go through emotional, mental and even physical abuse too, caused by women. Someone's reality doesn't invalidate your own. Yeah, extremities hurt. But a lot of people are just sharing their reality buh our insecurities make us feel attacked. Empathy is a human thing. When you sit and think that you didn't choose your gender, that nature gave it to you, you will not feel so entitled to anything. Nobody owes you bullshit. We are all flawed. We are more than chemicals in our body. When we realize we have things to fix in ourselves, we would be ready to change. Selah!

So ive been going through the same thing as the first gentleman at 27yrs old. One of the first things i noticed in my first few doses on hrt is an overwhelming sense of wellbeing. Super calm, sedated almost it seems. Im very content. Keep in mind im also pushing my hormones to the higher side of of the scale. I could certainly be aggressive but i was more irritable and more violent before i started therapy. Since then i haven’t had a single moment of rage, havent snapped on my loved ones. In fact overall I’m more patient and that might because of my reaction to this new sense of well being but one things for sure I’m the least aggressive then i have ever been in my entire life.

The huge issue is that household chemicals like shower gel or plastics do reduce the natural testosterone levels. Conversely, men have higher instances of renal failure than women and also have shorter lifespans. Testosterone may make you think that you have 'vigor' but in the longrun, you'll have a shorter lifespan.
@GeorgiaIsOnMyMind
@GeorgiaIsOnMyMind 5 лет назад
@Benchmark Land There's definitely a science to it. Testosterone is associated with increased methylation in the body which along with inflammation, oxidation & glycation is one of the four processes through which aging is accelerated. Methylation (like the other three) damages the organs. [There's a video I've seen of a 25 year old body builder here on RU-vid who discusses how his GFR went down several points after he started taking high levels of testosterone. This for me definitely established a link between testosterone & renal failure]. Go into any Dialysis center on any given day and you'll notice four times as many male clients as you will females. Another interesting thing is DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which is a metabolite of testosterone is a growth hormone antagonist. So the more DHT, you have (thinking you're such a man), the lower your level of GH will be. And we all either know, or have heard of GH's positive anti-aging, healing & regeneration effects. Men with higher levels of DHT also grey faster. Let me tell you an accidental self experiment I ended up running on myself. I took finesteride for hairloss and low and behold, I proceeded to look the same for the next 2 decades. At some stage, I indulged in treatment to reverse the processes and though my erections were great, I noticed signs of aging on my skin (for the first time in 2 decades). I then read that taking T & Dht curtails spermatogenesis & I really wanted to be a dad so I stopped the T & Dht & thankfully it hadn't affected my fertiity. I soon realized it was the T & Dht I had taken that had 'aged' my skin somewhat and added some negligible greys tn my head. Having gotten fatherhood out of the way, I started finesteride again & noticed the youthfulness once again. Its literally becoming questionable to those who've known me for a minute and give me a look like, so what are you up to? I'm my mid 40s and look like I'm in my mid 20s. Heck I'll take it. I now intend to keep my T levels in check for the duration of the time I'm on this good earth. I mean its cute when you first start producing it as a teen but ultimately, it ages you. And I believe we just dont need the amount that our bodies produce, and I feel sorry when I see some snake oil salesmen doctors trying to sell T to aging men who instead of amending their diets and adding exercise to their daily routines, want a quick fix to feeling better (not realizing the long term consequences). So yes, Al-Jahiz was definitely on the money. Ironically, like Al-Jahiz I also happen to be Muslim (pun intended :-)], though definitely not a scholar.

@@GeorgiaIsOnMyMind I thought part of the reason men had shorter lifespans was because they're taller than women on average? The heart has to circulate blood in the body more often with taller people. Not saying this is 100% the reason, but tall people, both male and female, do have shorter lifespans than their short counterparts.
@GeorgiaIsOnMyMind
@GeorgiaIsOnMyMind 5 лет назад
@@PKMNFan4664 Do you have any studies on this? If so, do post here. It would be interesting to know how much height difference makes how much a difference to longevity. My guesstimate is not much, and a 5'4 woman and 5'10 to 6 ft man could have equal lifespans. I think the only time it would make difference would be if the man is 7ft or something like that, but I could be wrong, and am open to being educated. I also think it could come down to having a healthy heart. An aging heart is likely to give out sooner and it is not unknown that men suffer from heart disease more than women do. A lot of your problems disappearing are from stopping ant-depressants.. Until you have had hormone treatment which stops the production of testosterone and your testes shrink to the size of your pinky nail do you realise what it does to your body. Testosterone inhibitor make you aggressive, where you were not before. Likewise when you stop the Testosterone inhibitor you again become aggressive. More specifically, I'd like to know what the current studies and thoughts are about whether TRT is linked to an increase risk of heart disease. I have always eaten a healthy diet, I used to be a marathon runner, I workout at a gym, and have always kept myself in very good physical shape. When I talked to my cardiologist, my endocrinologist, and my primary doctors about it I hear conflicting information. Both the cardiologist and the endocrinologist don't think TRT is a contributing factor, but my primary doctor seems to think it could be. I'd like DW Documentary to do more investigation into any possible link.

There's too many variables. That's why you're getting conflicting opinions. The first and foremost factor is genetics. Do you have a family history of heart disease? Also, some people have elevated ideas of what a healthy lifestyle entails.

@@krane15 Yes, unfortunately, there is family history of heart disease in my family. I'm not sure what you mean by "some people have elevated ideas of what a healthy lifestyle entails." Please elaborate.

@@tonyprzybylski861 A lot of people do a pretty bad job on keeping track of what they eat. They recall their meals, but totally disregard all the snacks they eat in-between. They go to the gym, but don't really do any intensive exercising. They also grossly over estimate walking as exercise. Which counts very little unless you're in your late eighties.

Its bad if u take too much. Take just the amount a normal healthy 25-35 year old male would have. I might do that when I turn 45 or 50. Also shout a lot. It naturally increases T levels.

There was a study on clogged arteries and found that its caused by bacteria in your mouth. The study used z pac antibiotics which unclog arteries very quickly. It worked so well that the study was shut down and told everyone to not mention a word about it. No money in cures.

The researchers completely missed that in the first study, the boosted acts of generosity had to do with being observed. This is not, at it's heart, purely pro-social behavior in the form of actual generosity. This so-called "generosity" is therefore at its heart self-oriented, i.e., selfish, and advantage-seeking. That is inherently non-sharing behavior, because its underlying motivation is for personal gain, especially where sexual advantage is concerned, apparently, since it occurs often when women are observing according to the narrative. A typical overlook that men will make when observing men's behavior, I'd say.

Interesting viewpoint, though I wonder if your statements are based on science/ fact/ study vs your biased opinion. It kinda comes off in a negative tone, but that may very well be due to the fact that I exercise generosity for the benefit of the person(s) receiving it. I've been at points in my life where generosity at the hands of others, both known and unknown to me, really moved me emotionally, and answered questions I didn't ask, whether it be for pride, embarrassment, or self-proclaimed independence (aka "I don't need anybody's help; I can get there on my own.") It took me years (I'm 47) to find a comfort level in accepting other people's acts of generosity in the spirit that it's given. Of course, there are those who perform these acts for the sake of gaining recognition/ acknowledgement/ etc, and have negative responses when they feel they didn't receive it. But that's not applicable to everyone, regardless of gender. I credit it more to individual experiences, growth, maturity, and viewpoints.
