I dunno how to put this into words but I’m gonna do the best I can. In today’s world we say “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” so casually, like it means nothing. But here, the way he says “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” really makes it seem like a horrifying event that actually happened. Like you’re about to watch a documentary on a murder case or something. I love how the movie starts with the corpse tied to the tombstone and the radio in the background explaining what had happened. This movie is an absolute masterpiece in the way it builds up to the horror. The innocence of the youths just driving to make sure their loved ones graves weren't harmed. The drunk sheriff was eerie as hell. Then, they pick up the guy that actually did the grave robbing on the side of the road, carrying a bag of items he looted from the graves. Just a great movie. Think I'll watch it tonight.

Sheriff wasn't drunk, that was basically the town drunk that was talking. He said he's seen things. Implying he saw the hitchhiker and I guess the family do some shit, but he didn't say anything. At least that's what I thought he may have been implying.

I remember watching a double header at the local theater...this one, and immediately after, Young Frankenstein. After watching TCM, there was a ten minute break before the next movie started. I watched about 90% of the people make a mad dash out the door of the theater, women were crying, men were silent but you could see what was going on inside their heads. People were beyond shocked, and all this before CGI. Greatest horror? slasher? film of all time. I felt like I was in the movie and this was happening to me.

What was real: 1- Furniture made of bones. Most of the story was inspired by serial killer Ed Gein, who used the bones of his victims to make furniture. He was also known to exhume bodies from graves to make their corpses his furniture 2- Leatherface' mask. Ed Gein wore masks made of human skin. 3- Chainsaws. Chainsaws were Ed Gein's signature weapon 4- Cannibalism. Ed Gein ate his victims What was fictional: 1- The story as a whole. There was no cannibalistic family, Ed Gein committed his murders solo. 2- The setting. Ed Gein lived in Wisconsin 3- The body count. Ed Gein only had two confirmed murders, both were middle-aged women 4- The time. Ed Gein's first murder was in 1954 and the second was in 1957, not a group of people all killed at once

Gein was not a serial killer. He killed two people on two separate occasions. He was also trying to recreate his dead mother. He also did not use a chainsaw. The idea of Leatherface using a chainsaw was when Tobe Hooper was in a hardware store and had grown frustrated in waiting in line. He saw a chainsaw display and thought it would be an easy way to cut down the line, that frustration is what led to the chainsaw being Leatherfaces signature weapon

I used to think it was real too. Now I realize that leatherface is a blend of things... hes the face of what human brutality and sadism can be... everything that leatherface is has been done. 1. Grave robbing, Gein did that. 2 cannibalism, Dahmer and many others including indigenous tribes have done that. 3 chainsaw killing, the cartel covers that. Wearing human skin and masks of people's faces making furniture and sundry items, gein covers that. Blend all those things together and you get leatherface.

I really appreciate the journey I've been on with the original TCM, too: I first became aware of the franchise upon finding a hideous Leather-Face doll in a shop in Turkey, of all places. The film went from being something I dare not imagine, to another horror movie I chewed up as a teenager, to a subject of admiration and fascination. In many ways, the perfect horror film!

But when you apply the logic that the first film is just a dramatic re-enactment, it sort of makes sense of the franchise’s continuity and why in some films none of it makes sense.
