It's about 120 miles long and at certain points, up to 20 miles wide. Full of spectacular hues of orange and green with a bright blue sky above. Quite a reputation for this canyon precedes our arrival, and perhaps its reputation would be even greater if it weren't for the world famous Grand Canyon to the west overshadowing this gem of the Great Plains. As we drive towards the center of the Texas Panhandle, almost suddenly flat land will transform into this colorful landscape of red rocks and desert vegetation deep below, the first reaches of the Caprock Escarpment's drastic topographic change. Palo Duro Canyon mystified original natives, Spanish explorers, and American outdoorsmen as a naturally attractive sight for sore eyes. But the canyon's human interaction is merely a footnote within its lifetime, for it took millions of years for geologic uplift and erosion to carve the intricate portrait of hills, hoodoos, caves and gulches we see today. Is this the first time the Coverage Project has made it to the desert? Let's celebrate with a 6 mile roundtrip hike to this state park's most notable feature.
