Lakepointe Church in Texas told members to help them manipulate traffic data so they could convince the city to put a stoplight in front of their building.
Then they got caught.

Ive never understood how religious tax exemptions worked. They make more money every service than some countries do a year. That tax money could be putbtowards healthcare. Helping homeless. People sin. All people, and it is, or should be acknowledged by churches. A true Christian is one who accepts that but tries to do the right thing owning up when they fail. Unfortunately a lot of Christians forget that and also fail to forgive others for their "sins". James 7.3 "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" Oh, by the way, I'm not a Christian but was bought up in a Christian family that sees the bible as a guide which has to be taken in the context of the period it was written and that a lot of it is alagory rathet than literal. Hence the fact I wasn't indoctrinated but allowed to find my own way in life.

I remember seeing a coordinated effort organized on Next Door to mess with traffic numbers during a traffic study near my old neighborhood. What these people didn't count on was not only was the compression counter laid across the road but the current traffic camera was turned just enough to cover the counting position. After the study was completed, the DOT issued several hundred traffic violations for people driving forwards and backwards over the compression counter and sent bills to the people for the extra wages that they had to pay the staff involved in the study to parse out all the erroneous data. Last post I saw from one lady was that she amassed $1,200 in tickets and an extra $350 for "research wages". Best part of the whole thing, they failed to manipulate the study.

Taxing churches won't increase tax revenue, it only kills churches. Most church goers don't actually believe in the non-sense but a few do. Unlike other social clubs churches have a diverse group of members that covers the whole range of socioeconomic groups, so it brings people together that would not other wise get to interact socially

Something else that's easy to forget is that if the city spends a lot of time and money putting in a traffic light there when it isn't needed, that is all now time and money that cannot be spent on other traffic-safety measures elsewhere in the city. It all comes from a limited budget. If you're spending it somewhere it isn't needed, that also means you're _not spending it somewhere it is needed._ So deliberately misleading the city about things like this is not harmless. It could *literally result in additional traffic injuries or fatalities* in the future. "We decided we want a traffic light in front of our church, even though we don't need one, so we're willing to _let people in the community die_ to make that happen." Yeah, real Christian attitude there...

@davidszmagalski4233
@davidszmagalski4233 2 месяца назад
As a Traffic Engineer for a large Texas City for 35 years, we NEVER told anyone when we might be conducting signal warrant evaluations. Ever. And if the study counts appeared to be skewed, we would do random field observations and recounts for validation. Also all driveways would have to be open and operating normally. Executives at some office building, or hospital, or school, or government building, or church might try some shady stuff like bumping numbers up by closing driveways, but it’s really easy to detect. And the cost and danger of placing an unnecessary traffic signal makes it worth the time to do and re-do the traffic studies as often as necessary to get it right. We never kept $1 million in the budget for random pop- signal installations. They were studied in-depth, evaluated, approved, surveyed, designed, and placed in the budget for future fiscal years.

"Look, about what I said/did...I'm genuinely sorry. I thought it was funny at the time and I didn't realize how hurtful it was. I'll make strides to do better and be better. To those that I hurt, I humbly apologize." Seriously, how hard is it to write and say something like that? You know what's even funnier...they could buy a portable stoplight and set it up when they have busy traffic. They can be purchased and frankly, this church would likely have the money to do just that. And they'd own it, and they'd never need to hire someone again.

This is where also they could work with the city to allow them to set one up on that day. Then the area could be signed to warn that traffic lights on Sunday. There are options and they didn't try all of them.

They could just pay for the light they want outright. It’s about $250,000 to build a new traffic light (+-75k state to state). That’s why we do traffic studies and such before installing them-because the budgets are limited so we prioritize where they go. If you’re willing to pay for it outright, most places will permit it and work with you. I helped a subdivision get a light to assist with exiting traffic. The county agreed to build it for them and assessed it as a dedicated additional property tax over 10 years. (The final cost was divided evenly across every plot, and added to each plot’s property tax. You could pay it early if you like, or ride out the ten years). The threshold was that at least 66% of the properties had to vote in favor of the project. This is pretty standard. Many counties will help you with orphan roads, bridge access, and so on this way.

A camera on the intersection and an analysis of the license plate numbers would debunk their inflated traffic load. 🤦‍♂️ On a related topic: "Separation of church and state" does NOT equal "churches don't pay taxes". 😖 We live in interesting times. 🇺🇸

I think they want a light to drive up church membership. If people are forced to stop in front of the church, they might consider checking them out, especially if the marquee sign in front says something clever. Marketing 101.

Taxing churches won't increase tax revenue, it only kills churches. Most church goers don't actually believe in the non-sense but a few do. It is primarily a social club and in today's era of social isolation churches are more important than ever. Unlike other social clubs churches have a diverse group of members that covers the whole range of socioeconomic groups, so it brings people together that would not other wise get to interact socially

Per your question “Why don’t they put up stop signs?” The road the church is on is a major divided highway coming out of/into Dallas. Even a light would be a major inconvenience; stop signs would not be possible.

For a study to be valid, the firm doing the study would have to set-up two traffic counters. One would count the traffic on the street in front of the church. The other would count the traffic in and out of that entrance. Those numbers would be used to project traffic density overall. The number of cars going in and out of the named entrance. The groups just doing high traffic on just those days, could skew the data but the city traffic engineers would take a look at the data and would know that the data collected was not right. You'd have to be an expert in order to fake higher traffic density and hide it.

My daughters’ elementary school wanted a stoplight because it’s a charter school with no bussing and there is a lot of traffic at drop off and pickup. There were also accidents occurring because of it. Did they request parents to drive back and forth in front of the school to scan their way into a traffic light. Nope! So we got school traffic signs. This is a charter school which is not religious but has a high emphasis on moral focus. But this isn’t the type of thing a school would do to scan a city. This is what snake oil salesmen do.

My mother drove my older sister and I to church. Sister walked to her class, mom went to the adult service and I walked towards my class. After sister and mom were clear, I would turn and bolt to the nearby mall and spend the money in the envelope my mom gave me for church cover fee on donuts and candy. I met them at the car an hour later.

They also want to make the church attendance "more enjoyable" for the congregation. This makes me think that some parishioners have complained about the long wait times, or cited the length of time it takes to get on the road for why they don't want to bring their school-aged kids to mid-week services. More than most other churches, megachurches know they have to please their customers, or lose them. That's why most people start attending megachurches in the first place: They could offer more bells and whistles than their stodgy neighborhood church. And if the traffic gets annoying enough, or a new megachurch opens in a more convenient location, they'll leave Lakepointe Church without a qualm.
