In 2017 buses were required to have seatbelts. This bus was a 2011 model. Not sure why this model was chosen for the field trip.

Can you imagine if the bus had seatbelts and something happens and the bus caught on fire, can you imagine how the driver is suppose to make sure all 35-80 kids are unbuckled and evacuated the bus within 1-3 minutes before the bus is fully in flames with smoke getting thicker and making it harder to breathe with each second passing by. They have seatbelt cutters that the buses are issued but they only work for like 3-4 belts before the blade dulls and their not allowed to carry sharp objects on the buses. Buses are built strong enough to not need seatbelts and the seats have extra padding on the backs for that reason as well. It’d be easier to evacuate without buckles then the kicks won’t be tripping over them to get out of the bus rolled over over and caught on fire then the kids would be dangleing trying to get unbuckled, or the kids could use them as weapons and hit each other with the buckle part then parents would be mad about that. Especially since it mentioned they was pre-k kids, most likely they wouldn’t be able to all unbuckle and evacuate quickly during an emergency.

There are seatbelts, in New Jersey at least, I'm A Safety Manager and School Bus Driver, ? A school bus has no protection despite the seatbelts these things are more prone to happen, the real question, why no airbags?

I used to build school buses. I was told that seatbelts are mandatory in some states and not in others. They build the buses based on the customers requirements.

@@mannlaura I work for Charlotte school system I don't see any seatbelts on the Regular Ed bus. They have seatbelts on the Special needs bus in order to hold wheelchair in place.

I built school buses. I was told that in some states, seatbelts are mandated, and others they are optional. Some states use the excuse that it will be harder for first responders to get kids out of the bus in an emergency if they are in seatbelts.
