That's a huge budget for schools that are already struggling. At our nearest high , the teacher collects them in a box. Then hands them out as they leave for the next class.

This is a good idea. I see so many parents staring at their phones instead of interacting .

Our teens teachers just put a clear shoe holder over the door and kids drop their phones into a pouch when entering and then grab them when exiting. Not a single phone was stolen and kids checked messages from parents between classes and at lunch. Doesn't cost 400k.

It would if you needed to give one to every classroom and office. with this device, staff could technically share the unlocking machines if they needed.

@@brianhaflin9799 what? Plastic shoe holders are $10 at the discount store here. Our district has 200 teachers approx for HS so total cost of 2K not 400K. And seriously, it works. I sub at the school on a regular basis and the students don't mind because between classes and at lunch they check messages. And in our safety drills, students are allowed to grab their phones. We want our students to have access to their parents and 911 if a shooting event happens.

@@brianhaflin9799 this is true but it should be handled on a case by case basis, banning ALL cellphones for potential abuses denies responsible users due process. using the pouch as a disciplinary action would be appropriate for sure if a student tends to abuse his privilege. Some schools are a joke when it comes to rules and regulations such as cell phones polices because the students at these schools walk all over the employees due to the lenient discipline policies. The students know they can break the rules and regulations and not get hard consequences, so they basically do whatever they want including being on their phones all day even though they are not allowed to. Because of this, some schools are like the circus, the students are the ring leaders, and the employees are the clowns...

In a front pocket makes is accessible in case of an emergency, which is what should be every school's standard. The gadget they are showing is completely unnecessary. And more of a hindrance in an emergency, not to mention prohibitedly expensive for schools that have many more important things they need to purchase. Now and always!

Something that jumps out at people (who aren't also staring at their play phones constantly) is that kids (students) can't read, write, or speak a coherent sentence. The ability to communicate is gone, mainly because as long as you're dicken around with a play phone all day, there's no need to communicate. The same goes for "grown ups." It's only just one reason why the United States has become a 3rd world, has been "country." Now go waddle the aisles of Walmart for Chinese junk and load it in your foreign car (while squealing for handouts).

I like the idea to have the student put the phones in pouches that than on the wall. They don't need to have them on them all the time. I used to substitute teach preschool to 12th grade. Every classroom at all the different schools all have phones that are sitting on the teacher's desk or on the wall. Also, a lot of schools are working with agencies to install big buttons on the walls throughout the school to press if there is a shooter and then the agency has a direct feed to the school and can work with the police. Do you know how many times the student leaves the ringer on? If you call them when there is a shooter around, your kid is no longer invisible. They are told to go hide and be quiet. You can get your child a bulletproof backpack, or better yet there is a bunch of online school for k through 12. Also, I have seen many students throughout the years pull out their phones and put them under their desks, and keep looking at their crouch. Yes, we see them on their phones when they should be reading or paying attention.

we live in a one-party consent State which means students can legally record conversations with other students, teachers and staff in areas of the campus where there is no expectation of privacy. They really don't care that students are distracted. This argument is a red herring.

@@sportygal1101yeah but that happened so rarely 99.8% of kids will never even experience it. I know it happens too much I admit that but it doesn't happen as much as the media portrays it. They make a lot of money selling people fear. It's causing more real widespread damage by kids being distracted in class. It's always been bad but reading and math levels have went down even further in recent years and many teachers say children are distracted on their phones when they can't even read or form coherent sentences.

This is just telling that these teacher are old school. I hate the fact that you are forcing children to lock up their lifeline. I don’t care if it changes their brain. But it doesn’t change the fact that we’re in a different world where gun violence happen, and we need our phones in our pockets. Not in a lock pouch. We need our phones in case of emergency. And some people need their phones because they have type 1 diabetes. I need a phone because it’s the only way to stay connected with family. And if there is an emergency in the building, what if those locked pouches can’t open at all, and they’re stuck? Also, someone invented something on our pants. They’re called “pockets”! Also, Apple invented something as well. It’s called “Do Not Disturb”. You can’t force children to not have their phones. Think of the consequences during an emergency if a school shooter enters the school, and a student is killed before he or she can text their last words to their parents. Because their phone is locked somewhere, where they can’t reach out to their family. A phone is also important because it has benefits that we need to stay alive. Think about it.

It might sound calloused but, I’d be willing to bet that the number of individuals of whose mental health has been negatively-effected due to school-shooting atrocities (both short term and long term) pales in comparison to the number of people who suffer an array of mental health crises due to school-related social media usage (both long and short term) Let’s round up and say there’s 3-5 school shootings a year (💔) i have no concept of how many lives are impacted but if you compare that to social media related bullying and trauma… even if you round down, that’s got to impact 30%-50% of EVERY high school in America.

This is the smartest comment here. I agree. Those phones pose such a distraction that to me outweighs the 000 1% chance a kid is going to be involved in a school shooting. So the argument some parents and students make that they need to be able to contact each other in a shooting event holds very little weight with me. The distractions and bullying from smartphones is worse than not having it in the infinitismal chance your at school and it gets shot up.
