This is my beat-up copy of Patrick Hurley’s "A Concise Introduction to Logic."
It’s often assigned to college students. You’ll learn a lot from this text. Hurley covers categorical, propositional, and predicate logic. There’s a coverage of the fallacies, induction, and more.

I have used a lot of logic textbooks and I totally agree with this video. Hurley's textbook is hands down the best intro of the whole subject of logic I have seen. From informal to formal even covering a good bit of predicate logic. I highly recommend.

In 1965, I took a 2 semester English course "Introduction to Logical Discourse", from a thin textbook. Made an A. It helped me throughout my career in Electrical Engineering. Don't know the name of the text.

Not a bad book at all! A used copy of an older edition is the way to go.

I used "Logic and Philosophy" (4th ed.) by Howard Kahane back in the day. (I still have it.)

On ebay one can find 13th edition with Hurley and Watson as co-authors. Is this a different textbook? Thanks

Hi, @sgc603. I hope you are doing well. Yes, it's the same textbook; it's just a different edition.

Just found your channel. Inspired to learn more logic and its use especially in writing and arguing facts. I consult on medico-legal cases and this knowledge would seem to be very essential. Thank you.@@AmateurLogician

I have a little dumb question. What is the use of logic?(well more of my question is where and why do we use logic? Like do we use it in programming or something?)
@AmateurLogician
@AmateurLogician Месяц назад
Not a dumb question! You're asking it because of the failure of public education. It’s true that logic can be helpful in computer programming. More generally, logic can help us think and reason better. Think of an argument. Someone "argues" that X is true because of Y and Z reasons. Logic can help us determine if X "validly follows from" Y and Z. It can help extend our knowledge. Think of geometry. Making "proofs" is a big part of that subject. Logic is involved in making those proofs. And it's not just about mathematics. Logic can help us determine if an argument made by a politician is valid or invalid. Logic helps us spot fallacies or bad reasoning. It can help us when we think about economic theories or philosophical reasoning. I've created a tutorial on this: amateurlogician.com/trivium-logic/ You might find that of interest. And, please, feel free to contact me!

is it better than kreeft's logic book?
@AmateurLogician
@AmateurLogician 4 месяца назад
@divinefavour1289 Good question. We're kind of dealing with apples and oranges. Peter Kreeft's book might be the superior book as a whole, but the books cover different topics and take very different approaches. Kreeft’s book is strictly on traditional logic. It's not a book on symbolic/mathematical logic. You won't learn propositional or predicate logic from it. Hurely's book does cover symbolic/mathematical logic. So, Hurely covers things Kreeft doesn't. At the same time, Kreeft (for example) goes more in-depth into categorical syllogisms and other areas of traditional verbal-style logic than Hurely.

@@AmateurLogician İ see, thanks. another thing. i am having trouble getting a copy of the physics for realists. mechanics textbook. do you have a pdf version you could share?

Hi @@divinefavour1289, I don't have a PDF. Sadly, it is a harder book to get. You can try www.bookfinder.com/ or the publisher's website www.iapweb.org/ for a hard copy. It's not cheap, alas.
