Textron is developing the SkyCourier as a utility aircraft that can carry freight or passengers. The twin turboprop model has now started its flight test campaign and will likely complete type certification by the end of 2021, when it is due to enter service with FedEx. Six prototype aircraft will be involved in the flight testing at Textron’s facility in Wichita, Kansas.

People keep missing the main selling point and the reason why it was build: It hauls 3, LD3 containers which are standardized aviation containers. For a max cargo load of 6000 pounds or 2722 kg, It will only take a few minutes to load and unload this aircraft = less downtime. It has single point refuelling just like big airliners, meaning bigger pressure and much faster re-fuelling, again = less downtime. Remember, aircraft do not make money sitting on the ramp. It's got the simple and reliable Garmin G-1000 cockpit, a fixed gear meaning less maintenance and things that can go wrong. And the worlds best selling turboprops the P&W PT6 powering it. It's already a success before it's been delivered. Fedex ordered 50 of them with an option for 50 more to replace some of it's hundreds of Cessna 208 Caravans.

C S, I think you miss the message here. The comments are expressing a disappointment with the lack of innovation and progress presented by a company that has done almost as much as the FAA to prevent progress in the industry for half a century. If there is really anything truly advanced here, no one from Textron Cessna is pointing it out. It’s a new plane built to fit a business need which mostly could have been built 50 years ago. The new bits are all from non Textron companies it seems as well. And, how new are they? G1000 and PT6? There’s really no great deal here. It’s a highly inefficient, combination of old tech. It’s not bad, it’s just we expect more. Somebody needs to hire up all the talent from the now Chinese owned companies and get to work.

Matt Foster, True, but totally besides the point. You can argue that all you want. I’m explaining what you are seeing in the comment section. You have grasped a fact, now, if you can, try to grasp the truth of the big picture. Where’s the plane that moves the industry forward? It’s not a free market in aircraft, not really. If Fed ex had gone to anyone fifteen years ago they could have made almost exactly this plane. In fact, 50 years ago you get about this same solution with steam gauges. What other industry leader gets away with this nonsense? Even Levi’s has made more strides.

Some people have already made comments on the similarities between this aircraft and the Shorts 360 and it's cargo predecessor, the Skyvan. I live near Belfast, and the similarities are remarkable. The Skyvan in particular did look like a shoebox with wings but it was widely used in mountainous countries such as Nepal for cargo. I only flew once in a 360 as a passenger and it seemed as if the engines were working overtime. However, I'm proud of Shorts and its background. During the Second World War it produced the Shorts Sunderland Flying Boat and in later years turned out 10 Belfast Freighters for the RAF. They were the largest cargo plane in the world at the time. The RAF sold them off just before the Falkland's conflict and had to lease them back again to ferry cargo to Ascension Island. Later, they built the turbo -prop Tucano trainer for the RAF which is still in use today. I seem to remember that the Tucano can fly as fast as 400 mph and is the preliminary trainer before moving on to fast jets.

Was lucky enough to visit the RAF Museum at Hendon, they've got a Sunderland in one of the hangars.....You don't really appreciate how big it is in real life...It's HUGE Tucano was retired end of last year after 30 years to be replaced by the Beechcraft Texan.... which looks just like a Tucano?

Morten Kapa - I would think the purpose is for shorter flights. For example to fly a couple hundred pounds of packages only a hundred miles from say a FedEx site in Kremmling, Colorado to Denver International Airport? That short haul between regional facilities to minor sites is the more likely use of this aircraft, which is how FedEx uses the Cessna Caravans already.

Air mail, package, and freight service is extremely hard to justify on an efficiency basis, unless you buy the claim that the merchadaise is really so critical that it needs this kind of quick delivery. That happenstance is actually so rare as to be practically negligible. Far and away the most efficient form of delivery is by rail.

A lot lot cheaper for a community to pave an air strip than to get rail service.

First. Twin otters are no longer being built. Second. Twin otters are being refurbished and sale for roughly the same price as the sky courier. Third. There's only a limited supply of twin otter frames and aircraft. Fourth. Cessna has already produced an aircraft in the 208 that was also made specifically for FedEx before. Fifth. FedEx won't be the only one purchasing that aircraft, the same scenario as with the 208. Finally. The demand for the twin otter is high, but no real true replacement, until now. FedEx changes the game again.

Imagine a Caravan-on-steroids-sized STOL Skymaster design with the 2 pt-6 engines. If they can hinge the nose of a C-5 Galaxy, they can hinge the rear fuselage cap, whether it clears the engine and prop, or takes them with it. Centerline thrust allows single engine econo-cruise after the two powerful P&W’s have catapulted the loaded bird skyward STOL-style, and continue on rocketing the whole cast party at an aggressive rate of climb up to cruise altitude, level off, and give that power setting on both engines a couple of minutes level flight to accelerate up to, and a lttle beyond, the intended single engine cruise speed so the one engine is only tasked with maintaining, NOT accelerating to, said cruise speed if it happens to be higher than the airspeed on climb out.. Cessna should build that instead of this horror ... or license somebody else to build it.

More or less. Designation will be the 408 and it will be assembled in the west side of Wichita at the Cessna facility next to the Sovereign aircraft line. I should know that because I work at that facility.

Please pardon my ignorance. I was unable to understand the motivation to develop a brand new aircraft from scratch. I am of the opinion that there are already existing aircrafts which meet such a specification.
@mattf49006
@mattf49006 4 года назад
you are incorrect.... the Cessna cruises 20 to 30 knots faster..2000 lbs more payload, able to load and carry 3 LD-3 shipping containers ...single point refueling and is a mill to a mill.5 cheaper..different missions..the 408 was designed for Fed Ex specs for short haul freight because no existing aircraft met the requirements

Carrying LD-3 containers at those high cruising speeds? No. Watch the Twin Otter get decimated in sales.. much like the Caravan did to so many legacy aircraft.

Maybe this plane will shave off 9 days of the last leg of your parcels delivery time. My parcel took two days from Champaign, Illinois to Salt Lake City, NINE days from Salt Lake City to Logan, UT 85 miles north ! What the Hell !
@Big.Ron1
@Big.Ron1 4 года назад
We have the same problem here NW of Phoenix. A parcel makes it to Phoenix in a day or two, then to the warehouse in Buckeye, or GoodYear, then it takes a week to make it 15 miles north. Crazy. 1500 miles overnight. And then 15 miles a week. Hell i could walk it before lunch. Very strange.
