Woodturning - Ibreak in my new Henry Taylor super flute bowl gouge on this project, turning a lump of ash in to a textured and coloured bowl, via the help of a proxxon mini long neck angle grinder and a Merlin2 rasp then spirit stains from Chestnut Products and silver metallic paint from Jo Sonja...

Since I started making these videos in 2017, I have been lucky enough to receive the support of some manufacturers with materials to use in my videos. Since May 2018, Chestnut Products have provided me with stains, an iridescent paints sample set, lacquers and waxes. I'd like to thank them for their kind and generous support. Martin Saban-Smith has provided me with a sample set of Intrinisic Colours.
All other products and tools, unless where indicated, have been bought from suppliers at retail prices. Products mentioned in my videos are for information purposes so that viewers know what I have used.

Love the “finished” project. I would think 10-15 light coats of lacquer would do the trick. But the make has to make that decision. The flatter finish isn’t bad at all. This surface and the colors remind me of water and I’ve never seen “flat” water. It always has a shine. Lovely work Stewart. The tool look good as well.

Good! I picked the right afternoon to play hooky away from the heat. The texturing left a bit of a striated effect in the paint which I very much like. Good color choices too. I've been sharpening on an old Delta 4X36 belt sander for years, using home made guides. Once I have the shape I switch to 320 metal polishing belts, beautiful edge with minimal steel removal. Once I have the shape I like I'm to cheap to waste the rest of the metal. 😛

Nice video. Just for your own information, you should get that blue colored 60 grit belt for rough shaping bowl gouges. I think the one you used was an aluminum oxide. Not really meant for steal.
@stewartfurini
@stewartfurini 3 года назад
Cheers, Robert - it is a 60 ceramic belt I was using...the Sorby ones are the same colour as their aluminium oxide ones....will make that clearer if I do another sharpening section!
@glennmay6204
@glennmay6204 3 года назад
Hello Stewart, I see that you appear to be more at home with your Sorby gouge,but a couple of things occurred to me. Firstly the Taylor blade seemed longer than the Sorby and this may affect your stance. Secondly, twisting the headstock towards you to cut the wood might assist with your position in presenting the blade. I tend to favour the fingernail grind on the Sorby Pro. Whichever grind is chosen, it is simply the preference of the individual. One thing though is that moving the position of the blade further away, must change the angle of the bevel grind when presented to the abrasive band. I think that you may get a 45 degree bevel on the nearest hole, but the other two . . .? Anyway, it's a preference thing. Its a good bowl; has something of the sea. Maybe mussels in a rock pool, shimmering under the wavelets. . . . Regards, Glenn. :-)
@stewartfurini
@stewartfurini 3 года назад
Cheers, Glenn....getting used to the new gouge....you are right about the angle changing.....the second hole adds 5 degrees to the pro-set angle reading, the the third one 10....so I guess i'm using a 50 degree bevel at the moment on both the Sorby and the Henry Taylor gouge...will experiment with making this 45 on one of them...!

Gee, am I at the right place? Is that really you Stewart? 😆 I'm enjoying a finished bowl. I also love the inside of this bowl. I find it really hard to put paint on wood. I love wood. But I enjoy what you do with the colors. I wonder about putting the silver dabbed on last instead of white? It seems to have gotten lost. Thanks for sharing your creativity with me again. Stay safe, Vickie
